https://www.windowscentral.com/xbox-one-x-performing-phenomenally-says-npd?amp

Xbox One sales show the highest growth of the three major hardware platforms in the U.S. this year, and the Xbox One X in particular has been performing phenomenally... year-over-year growth like this at this point in the cycle has never been seen before, driven by launch of the Xbox One X and new content delivery efforts. It's a mid-generation turnaround the market's never seen before. This qualifies as phenomenal, even if not market leading.

The Xbox brand continues to gather more and more momentum. Next gen is going to be really interesting.

MOD EDIT:

The main point is that Xbox One sales in 2017 were lower than any other prior year in the US (excluding 2013). In 2018 the unit sales are more inline with 2015/16 which were the two peak years for the system. It remains to be seen whether Xbox One will have a record year, but it's still significantly up from last year.

It goes to show the impact that the Xbox One X release has had on Xbox One family sales in the US. The PS4 has seen a similar thing as well with sales notably up from last year.

Whilst there are multiple reasons why total sales are up, it is worth noting that One X and Pro are one of the main reasons.

Yet PS4 continues to outsell it? I'm confused (not hard lol)

edit - ah growth...makes sense as Xbox sales had dried up prior to the X launch

Europe is PlayStation land.
Japan is Nintendo/PlayStation land.

US is the only place I could see growth for next gen.
Xbox is also up substantially YOY in Japan btw, even though it barely amounts to anything.

Also Xbox One is bigger in Europe than PS4 is in Japan. Same even moreso for Switch, seems odd to class EU as only PlayStation Land given that.

Consistently in 3rd place isn't phenomenal. If numbers were bad previous years but their okay this year then they would look like it's way up on paper.
Without context this statement means nothing.
Microsoft keeps talking about Revenue. Revenue doesn't equal Profit. And their selling a $500 machine so yes, their revenue should be increasing.
Last place isn't winning

"growth percentage" can be deceptive sometimes though, depending on the numbers you had at the start of the calculation.

10 > 100%+ growth > 20
100 > 20%+ growth > 120

i'd like to see actual unit numbers instead of relative growth. growth in any sense is certainly great, but if you are not selling all that well to begin with, then i'm not that impressed.

I'm a Sony guy through and through but MS has really been killing it lately with the X. They delivered on most of their promises and new games get X support regularly. It also has more room to grow than Sony at this point.

Yeah, the growth this year has been excellent. That said, their numbers last year were absolutely dire prior to the launch of the X.

North America and the UK are all they need if the 360-gen is anything to go by. I'd also imagine that NA customers probably spend more on average than those in the smaller developing markets that Sony targets.

Funny how the tweet quoted from NPD that says "Console warring on the internet is one of the dumber things people do, unfortunately"

Directly followed by the article author saying games "like We Happy Few — Microsoft's machine manages to achieve native 4K while PlayStation 4 Pro only hits 1080p."

This is great. I hope both MS and Sony understand that people are ready to pay more than $399 - so we can get a little bit better hardware.

Kinda meaningless without knowing Xbox One sales.

Say Sony sold 18 million PS4s in 2017, and Microsoft sold 9 million Xbox Ones. The gap is 9 million consoles.

And in 2018, PS4 only saw 10 percent growth, while Xbox One saw 20 percent growth.

That's 19.8 million PS4s and 10.8 million Xbox Ones. The gap is still 9 million consoles.

Xbox 360 did great in continental EU too, especially in France. Xbox doesn't have to lead other markets to still do well in them.

The only real lost cause is probably Japan but that region's still strategic to maintain for development support.

The number of just aggressively salty people in this thread over vaguely positive sales news for an Xbox product is such pure, condensed Era.

More people are buying 4K TVs, and the X is the objective best pick for playing multiplats in that definition. Microsoft also cut the price significantly for BF, plus that great trade-in deal and financing.

It is not that wild it is selling pretty well.

...why? What does it offer now that it didn't before? I can't recall any killer apps for the Xbox One recently. Is it just Gamepass and superior multiplat games?

I am happy that Microsoft is trying it's best to make the brand better. The game pass is an amazing idea and i could see them doing better then Sony if Sony don't up their game.

Third party is most likely the reason. Way better ports. Game Pass might also be helping a lot as well.

The gap has nothing to do with reporting Xbox One hardware growth tho?

they are talking about the X, not the xbox one.

The X just had a native 4k game that also happens to be the biggest game of this gen.

they also have dozens of AAA games that run at native 4k or very close to 4k.

great news for MS. although their sales were pretty horrible last year, so such growth is merely getting back to what they should have been in the first place. WHen your in a race and driving backwards, getting back in forward gear isnt so impressive from one perspective. But just the fact that they were able to bring it back due to how aggressive they have been is very commendable.

The Xbox One X all told is a great product, even if i have no love for iterative machines in general

3rd party games look better in 4k on it. Also 4k Blu-ray (S has that too) make it worth it to me. I like my Pro too though

Game Pass and the only 4k Blu Ray player are compelling to some. I still can't believe Sony didn't include that.

Game Pass is the new high water mark. It's an amazing deal and looking to only get better.

Growth has been impressive in USA this year.

It's important to remember that last year was really bad for Xbox One though.

So? This is a news about Xbox growth by NPD, it's not talking about PS4-Xbox gap and you are not getting Xbox sales numbers

Why are people explaining growth over and over?

Just because you're not #1 in the "console war" doesn't make business growth irrelevant. Jesus this place sometimes. It's positive news on the back of a lot of very heartening decisions coming out of the Xbox division. Well deserved.

You know why, you see people talking about "winning the race" (lmao) and the PS4-Xbox gap when the actual content is Xbox One X growth.

The point is hardware sales growth doesn't mean much without knowing how much is actually sold. Hardware growth that doesn't close the gap between competitors is not really newsworthy. Hardware growth that does close the gap between competitors is newsworthy. We have no way of determining which it is.

I'm loving the motivated Xbox team. I hope Nadella likes what he's seeing.
Of course he does. :) It's very obvious at this point... The CFO is totally onboard too. keeps praising the Xbox team and even recently stated that she wishes they had given Xbox all the support they needed a long time ago.. I guess it's never too late to start making ammends. ..promoting Phil and giving him the freedom to run/expand the division as he sees fit is a good step but giving him and his dev teams a blank cheque is even better. https://www.gamereactor.eu/news/714103/New+Xbox+studios+told+to+realise+their+wildest+dreams/

Yeah, it's annoying. The 1X singlehandedly changed my opinion of Microsoft this generation after being thoroughly disappointed with my original XB1 (and to a lesser extent my 1S, which I only used for UHD Blu-ray playback). The 1X is now my go-to platform for BC and multiplats. In time, I have confidence that they'll get back to where they were during the 360 generation, with hopefully more of the creativity/unique offerings of the OG Xbox days.
