1. The seemingly abrupt closure of Telltale Games — given that they have known about these money related issues for so long, how is it that nobody knew about this internally, and why wasn't it dealt with? As sad as it is frustrating (to hear).

2. Nintendo Switch Online — barebones bollocks, and wasn't needed in anyway. Choosing the NES software as a source of persuasion is laughable, and the fact that everything is tied to a basic mobile phone app is just a terrible idea.

3. State of Decay 2 — buggy, unfinished and was somehow happily released in that state. After coming off the back of the shallow content in Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 made me realised that Microsoft doesn't care about releasing stuff comparable to early access games.

1. fallout 76: i mean, bgs haven't released a good game since skyrim, but this is a whole another level of incompetency. a half finished, buggy and broken game, for 60 dollars. A cynical person might even think that it was all a scam.

2. x018: this thing was tone deaf and pretentious (fake audience reactions, pre-recorded crowds etc) and had no real exciting gaming news. It was so bad it made me lose hope for xbox's future, and question the extent of phil spencer's influence for allowing this (shit)show to happen.

3. diablo immortal: blizzard announced it the worst way that was humanly possible. they need to stop thinking that people are going to just sit at their desks with their eyes closed and mouths open, and eat up whatever papa blizz decides to feed them.

some less offensive failures:
  • jessica price and arenanet: surprised this thing is already largely forgotten for how controversial it was.
  • ps classic: "hey, here are some games you can play on your browser (but probably wont), with an inferior controller. oh and its 100 bucks btw.."
  • philip muicin's plagiarism: to be clear i don't think this is less offensive than the first 3, but i think it will end up being less impactful
  • telltale shutdown: this is more sad to me than offensive, at the end of the day if you cant survive, you cant survive. they just didn't know how to shut their company down, or how to run it. but they had a lot of talent and released some of the best games the industry had to offer in terms of writing and narrative since 2012. its sad to see them go.
  • sony: they are on too high of a horse right now, they need it take it down a notch or they'll end up falling spectacularly.

2. Playstation Classic. Why in the world would they include 50hz PAL versions of games in this day and age?
3. Diablo Immortal announcement. Yes it's a great idea to have your big announcement at a hardcore gaming convention being a mobile game instead of the next iteration of the same series people were expecting to happen.
This is crazy

1. Fallout 76: I'm not sure I can remember the last disaster of this scale. It's No Mans Sky except without the few props you could give NMS. The game is such a whirlwind of awful that what would normally be big discussion points (the absurdly high mtx costs, for example) have just been buried. This one game may have completely altered the public perception of Bethesda.

2. Diablo Immortal: The announcement was obviously a bad idea, but what this whole debacle really revealed is just how much the gaming community is willing to cheerlead for and defend huge corporations. It was especially disappointing seeing so many journalists using their platform to both defend Blizzard and attack those who were upset.

I'll play the contrarian and offer a few that aren't in the list yet.

1. Super Seducer - tried to get passed off as "comedy" and "satire" (and received a "funny" sequel), but adjectives from its sales team don't change the fact that it genuinely tried to turn misogyny into a gameplay mechanic. Even Leisure Suit Larry at least had the decency to mix its sexism with self-loathing.
2. Metal Gear Survive - the only good to come out of this game was an analysis that postulated how it was actually a cry for help from its devs. (https://kotaku.com/metal-gear-survive-the-kotaku-review-1823584276)
3. Radical Heights as the radical downfall of Boss Key Studios - shipped as a mess of gray boxes and unfinished assets, and lasted for... I can't even remember how long. RIP Boss Key.

  1. Filip Miucin. Hooooooly shit, Filip Miucin. His termination from IGN when it was discovered his Dead Cells review was plagiarized was just the beginning of a jaw-dropping saga. In a complete non-apology, which was harshly rebuked by both IGN staffers and the internet at large, he also called out Jason Schreier for some crazy reason, and challenged everyone to find more examples of work he plagiarized...which turned out to be pretty much every thing he ever fucking published. IGN eventually scrubbed the entire site of "his" work, with several editors expressing sheer disbelief at the situation. The fact that Miucin did this shit for several years before getting caught is one of the most mindblowing acts of plagiarism since Limbo of the Lost.

  2. Diablo Immortal, where Blizzard hyped up a major Diablo announcement, only to end up using their very best stage and timeslot to show us all a money-grabbing mobile game that isn't even primarily developed by them. That it was the only major Diablo announcement at Blizzcon made it so much worse. Even just casually mentioning "oh yeah, and we're also working on a little thing called Diablo IV" would have calmed the ensuing firestorm quite a bit. The trifecta? Blizzard's almost total lack of communication about this disastrous presentation after the show. Eventually they released a barebones PR statement saying that yes, other Diablo projects are in the works, but by then it was far too late. Today the Diablo Immortal trailer remains one of Youtube's most downvoted videos, creating a PR nightmare that rivals EA's legendary "pride and accomplishment" fiasco about Battlefront II last year.

(Bonus points to Grinding Gear for the quick followup dunk, with the introduction of the villainous "Immortal Syndicate" in the new PoE expansion.)

  3. Fallout 76 is a game that released an year earlier than it should have, with concepts that sound dubious even on paper and frequently fall completely flat in practice. And that's not counting the armada of bugs, technical hiccups and server issues that seem almost determined to wring all the fun from the experience. Then there was the Collector's Edition bag, the extremely poorly-worded response from customer support, and the unbelievably half-assed compensation owners are receiving for it (a whole five bucks worth of points...and that's IF you email support with proof of purchase).

1. PlayStation Classic - Going with this as the number one because it could've been prevented so easily. A company like Sony doesn't have problems licensing the games, they just didn't want to bother with it at all

2. Telltale Games - Somehow managed to throw away a good thing where they had several successful enough series going on. Was looking forward to Batman S3, and now it'll never arrive.

2. Fallout 76 - All of it, but in the end it was expected and just a single game.

1. Fallout 76 - Everything just went so wrong. Poorly executed and Bethesda's worst game imo

2. Nintendo Online - Half baked online service with no exciting features and still lacking behind PSN and Xbox Live

3. PlayStation Classic - A massive shame. I don't know how Sony could mess this up. The game lineup could have been so much better

1. Fallout 76 - Everything about this game was an utter disaster. It is Bethesda's lowest quality and most technically inept game to date.

2. PlayStation Classic - I personally hate Classic Consoles as it is, but the PS Classic is the worst one so far by some margin. The lackluster selection of games, the poor quality of emulation, the lack of DualShock vibration, and 50Hz versions of games in all territories make this a complete joke.

3. Switch Year 2 - I'm listing Switch's second year as a whole as a massive letdown. The reality is that Switch's game output was a considerable step down from last year's. Beyond that, we also saw the introduction of an abhorrent paid Online Service that was awful on every front, and the death of one of my favorite and most beloved features of past Nintendo systems: Virtual Console. Terrible Sophomore year, Imho.

1. PlayStation Classic - low-effort trash that shows how much Sony cares about its legacy in reality.
2. Diablo Immortal - a prime example of how even the most beloved devs can go completely out of touch with their fanbase because of greed.
3. Telltale Games - it's a sad event, but it also reminder about how terrible management can ruin great studio and go bankrupt entire company within a few days.

Fallout 76 - one of my most anticipated games this year and you should've seen my face when I played the beta. They ruined the franchise with this shit entry. They took everything that made fallout. No human NPCs, no choices, no companions. The world just feels dead. I mean the moment you leave the vault is usually memorable but now the door opens you see few people doing emotes. I haven't been so disappointed in a long time.

Darksiders 3 - I really love this franchise but this entry should've been reworked or delayed for a complete combat rehaul. It feels like they started with a Darksiders game but then felt like making it a dark souls game half way. Shit camera, random dodge animation that works sometimes. The world feels empty, no soundtrack and other NPCs walking around like Darksiders 2. Just enemies hiding in corners waiting to jump you. I suppose that's what you get for buying games blind. I intend to finish it for only the story but not now

2. Rockstar Studios work crunch.

3. Fallout 76 - The beta was enough for me to see how poor and patched together this game was.

1. Playstation Classic - embarrassing display of trying to copy the NES/SNES mini´s success and failing at very basics

2. Sony E3 2018 - underdelivering on almost every front by showing the same titles again, being incredibly short and confusing the entire audience by what the heck is going on.

3. Nintendo Switch Online - lackluster in it´s offering and still lacking basic online funtionalities like voicechat and easy method of playing with friends; NES library is also rather weak.

1. Rockstar Crunch Culture - Yeah, no way this can't be number 1 for me. It's embarrassing to see executives being proud of their employees suffering from crunch.

2. Some Smash Bros fans attacking anyone who didn't believe a blurry image - Basically a display of immaturity and toxicity. People questioning that fake leak were basically attacked and their arguments ignored due to wishful thinking. Lots of insiders and journalists treated in a terrible way.

3. Telltale - Hiriing people a week before closing down, letting hundreds of employees without a job and financial security, poor management overall.

1. Bethesda Game Studios. They were heading downhill for quite a long time. In fact in my opinion their every subsequent game after Morrowind was progressively worse than the previous one. Fallout 4 is already not even an RPG, just a mediocre shooter in a large open world, in my opinion. And Fallout 76 is just a further step in the same direction. I know that it was made by a B-team, not by the main one, but it shows the management's preferred direction, namely to dumb down the games and try to go for easy cash grab. I don't have too much hopes for Bethesda's future games left, but still hopefully they will learn from this spectacular failure. I partially blame the people who bought Fallout 4 for it, actually. It sold very well due to the brand power and a huge marketing campaign, while being a clearly inferior game to the games they were making before that, and Bethesda decided that it's the way to go: dumb down their games, go for easy cash grab and it will work. Well, Fallout 76 showed that they were delusional.

1. Fallout 76
There must have been a point in development far enough back from launch to allow a release delay. Such a pity that nobody took that decision and allowed this fallout to happen.

2. Playstation Classic.
Hate to call it a lazy cash grab but it really does look like that.

3. Diablo Immortal.
The game that only those in Accounts asked for is fine. Do it, make it or licence it, release it, make a lot of money from it. It's fine.
Whats not fine is announcing it in front of your most loyal fans who all paid to be there. They never asked for it and don't want it. When dealing with complaints please ask yourself why they are complaining before responding.

1) Steam and Australian currency - Too many games not available anymore on the Store and an Australian tax applied to many games.
2) Fallout 76 - Low effort from the developers, greedy cash grab from publisher.
3) Nintendo Switch Online - Come on what does our money really buy? No dedicated servers, requiring a phone app for voice chat, charging us for P2P and our own connection, But oh we get some NES games and cloud saves!

1. RDR2 development environment, and the gaming community's turning of a blind eye towards it - while other disappointments ranged from lacking games to underwhelming classic consoles, this was just a pure moral fucking disgrace. Not only were the conditions horrific, but the media and general gaming community ignored the suffering behind the scenes, and endlessly praised rdr2 ignoring the human cost such a game can come with.

2. PlayStation Classic - as an owner of the SNES classic, and the PlayStation being the first console I owned, I had high hopes for this machine. Needless to say I was endlessly disappointed with the outcome. It really is just staggering how they managed to mess up such a seemingly simple task, and throw away a great opportunity. They literally had to actively try to make it be a failure given the cultural juggernaut that is the PS1, yet here we are.

3. Nintendo Switch Online - though it may improve in years to come, there really is no excuse for the atrocity that is NSO at the time I write this. I can understand paying for a service that provides quality online features like PSN or Gold, but even at such a low price this just really is not worth it. It's very nearly paying to have the exact same online experience as before, terrible phone app and all. Even the Virtual Console games are disappointing and spread too thin.

Honorable mentions
- FO76
- switch Q1-Q2 first party line up
- the lack of time I've had to play many games
- how criminally under-appreciated Celeste is and the fact that it won't win GOTY

1. Filip's Plagiarism. Like, his entire career is over (should be over). Every time I updated that thread here, people found more examples of his thieving. This exceeds any bad game or service for me.
2. Diablo Immortals. You can't be more out of touch with your fanbase and more overshadowed by Activision if this is your big Blizzcon announcement. Again, this exceeds any bad game or service. The game might even be decent, but that doesn't matter.
3. Telltale Games. Well, it's management at least. Straight up garbage, feel bad for the employees in how everything went. Especially the newer hires.

Bad games happen all the time, even from big titles. Fallout 76 is definitely a shame, but for it to be the biggest gaming fail? Nah, it's just another bad game.

1.Fallout 76 - Releasing a "game" in a barely functional pre-alpha state has got to be the new low standard for the industry.

2. PS classic - It just screams of a terrible attitude from Sony's part. It's even bigger of a shame considering how easy it would've been to do it properly. No excuse for Sony on this.

3. CRACKDOWN - I know it isn't even out yet but it's actually part of why it's a fail in my eye.

1. Fallout 76 - AAA studio Bethesda releases bug-infested, early access, asset flip and charges $60 for it. Refuses to acknowledge what a piece of trash it is.

2. Jessica Price fired from ArenaNet - Jessica Price snaps at a fan on Twitter and ArenaNet capitualtes to a mob(bolstered with MRA/KiA trash) and gutlessly fires her and another employee who defended her.

3. Closure of Telltale Games - TTG seemed like a successful company, then implodes without warning.

1. Fallout 76
Everything about this game seems like a huge joke. The game being absolutely broken and barebones as hell is one thing, but then you get the $200 CE stuff with them offering $5 MTX currency for false advertisement... I don't even lol

2. Sony skipping E3 2019
After having a very lackluster year in terms of having good showings/press events/conferences, them completely skipping next year's E3 is extremely disappointing. E3 to me and a lot of other people is like gaming's Christmas so having one of the big 3 completely skipping it feels bad/wrong.

3. Square Enix / FFXV stream
Hyping up an anniversary stream so you can cancel 75% of the planned story DLCs and announcing that the director of the game that had just recently started a new studio to work on a new up is leaving the company is something that you can only expect from Square Enix.

1. Telltale - Feel bad for the employee. Closure came out of no where. I think of all the failures this year, this is the one with highest real world impact, so it's number one by default.

2. Fallout 76 - Using old buggy template to make an even buggier full price ONLINE game. Nothing short of a scam with false advertisement

3. PS Classic - HOW DID YOU EVEN SCREW THIS UP. It's not higher only because the line-up isn't total trash (even decent in Japan) and the console works. The lack of iconic PS games like Tomb Raider, Crash, SotN, Tony Hawk are criminal and the lacking of features is badlook considering Nintendo already showed you how to do it

I don't know how this isn't winner by default. There are always lots of fails in a year but this one has to be hard to beat. I have rarely heard anything remotely positive about this game
2. Telltale's Collapse
to go from industry darling to complete collapse so quickly is a cautionary tale of what happens when you ignore foundational problems in order to grow quickly. That and being arseholes to your staff.
3. Playstation Classic featuring very few classics, using PAL versions for some games and being generally as barebones as they thought they could get away with.

dishonorable mentions: Riot Games, Diablo Immortal reveal, PUBG's fall from grace, anything to do with youtubers and streamers, Spyro collection needing a substantial download.

1. Filip Miucin. Lying scumbag who swindled his way to the top, and dragged down IGN's reputation with him when he was caught. Then doubled down on his lies and tried to sweep everything under the rug with his YouTube channel.

2. PlayStation Classic. How can you be so blantant to copy, but so inept at doing it actually well? What a scam.

3. Diablo Immortal. I feel it's more of a sign of how out-of-touch some companies are with their fanbases. If Blizzard had shown it as a "side experience" for phones, sure. But trying to push it as the next big Diablo thing, and "you will like it period", only served to alienate those who would have been interested in the announcement of a proper new game.

I would say Fallout 76 is up there, but then again, a game like that "dominated" GOTY talks last year. I don't think broken games sold as functional releases is something new.

... it actually didn't, but some people like to think that way.

Nobody remembers the plagiarize guy from IGN anymore?

12 people in the first page do. And I remember that weasel.

1. Telltale Games - A once hugely successful developer, destroyed by bad management over such a short period of time. Even at the time I felt that massively expanding at the rate they did and not changing up their formula was a bad idea.

2. Fallout 76 - The idea of an online-shared world Fallout is a great one, but even outside of the horrific bugs it is fundamentally flawed and it is baffling how issues with the engine are still present. Bethesda need to take a good, hard look at what happened and go back to square one otherwise they are in for a world of trouble.

3. Metal Gear Survive - I literally only just remembered it thanks to this thread. That shouldn't happen with a freaking Metal Gear game.

Dishonourable mentions

* PS Classic - How did Sony squander this opportunity? The 50hz issue alone should not be present for any region at this point in time, they need to take pride in their classic games and system. It does cause me a bit of worry that Sony is going back into hubris mode if not for the fact that PS4 is doing incredibly well.

* Diablo Immortal - Heck of an announcement eh?

* Square cancelling FF15 content - The way they did it was appalling, what the heck happened to have Tabata leave his new studio belonging to a major company so quickly?

  1. Fallout 76 | as collectors edition issue and then game being a poor that should be free 2 play (collectors edition pushed this to number 1 for me)
  2. Diablo Immortal | How this was handled at Blizcon and the comments afterwards then it being from a Chinese clone company. Then them doubling down on mobile.
  3. PlayStation Classic | This should of been a great product except they decided to use PAL versions of games than one standard. Also had a poor game selection.
Honorable mention

Telltale Games going bankrupt.

3. Filip Miucin
4. Nintendo Switch Online
5. Metal Gear Survive

1. Rare is lucky that Fallout 76 is here to steal Sea of Thieves' thunder, but I definitely won't forget this one. How a famous developer like Rare can release a game with basically zero content is beyond me. It was a €60 tech demo/early acces with no story, no (meaningful) quests and barebones presentation.

2. Like everyone already said, Sony copied Nintendo but didn't copy Nintendo well. Weird 50hz/PAL versions of games, ugly interface and a lackluster selection of games. The price is also bizarrely high, especially with the aforementioned bad things. However we can't forget the Neo Geo Mini, also a botched mini-console. Releasing a new Neo Geo system with no microswitches on either the console itself or the (optional) CD controller. Companies need to put more effort in these things.

3. With the amount of aversion and scepticisme video game journalism gets, it feels like we have to defend our job sometimes. Especially when people like Miucin come along and ruin it for everybody. Plagiarism sucks and cannot be defended. This hurt IGN, the YouTube that was plagiarized and the reputation of games journalism.

4. Nintendo releases a subpar online experience that people defend because it's cheap, but come on. Voice chatting with the app sucks and even though we have to pay, it lacks basic features like messaging or parties.

Because it doesn't always just work Todd, and Beth got away with plenty before and now it's about time they wake up.

1. Fallout 76 - bugs galore, no NPCs other than robots, lame Radiant quests such as collect bottles, poor engine/asset flip of Fallout 4, waste of time even if it didn't have so many bugs. A game so bad, it was discounted 40% or so the week after it came out. Oh yeah, Bethesda clearly advertised a canvas bag in F76 Collector Edition and instead it is a 50 cent nylon bag found in the $200 collector edition.

2. Playstation Classic - Nintendo has shown how to do it, how do you mess this up so badly? Very poor game selection with many early launch games that had horrid graphics/gameplay and lacking key franchises that defined the Playstation 1, 50 Hz games, games having poor frame rates beyond the 50 Hz screw up, no analog/dual shock controller (just include 1 controller and let people buy a 2nd).

3. Diablo Immortal - has Blizzard learned nothing, if announcing a mobile game of a popular franchise, you need to also have a teaser of a REAL game coming to consoles/PC, especially if it is the centerpiece announcement of your convention that people paid $200 to attend + the cost of a plane ticket/hotel. What makes it even worse is the game is clearly based off a Chinese mobile game clone of Diablo with the same exact interface as the Chinese release.

4 (Honorable mention) Telltate studios going bankrupt due to management incompetence such as insistence on keeping the same broken engine, licensing a ton of expensive properties to put out games that all feel too similar, for some of the licensed properties they removed the essence of the franchise which caused the game to fail commercially (GotG - management thought no one liked the humor and it had to be edgy/dark - huh?????), hiring new people and pretending nothing was wrong until it was too late, not paying any severance/health care to laid off workforce....

1. PS Classic - 50Hz fail. So much potential squandered for no apparently good reason.
2. Fortnite PlayStation cross play/account hostage drama - I've never played Fortnite, but Sony's logic was pretty insulting.
3. Filip Miucin plagiarism - It sucks being on the other side, where your work is stolen without attribute.

1. Fallout 76 - There is just no question that this game is a monumental fuckup on Bethesda's part. The technical difficulties plus the recent PR failures makes this undisputed gaming fail 2018 to me.
2. Diablo: Immortal - I've never even played any Diablo, but to announce a mobile title when the fanbase has been waiting for a full entry just shows how out of touch some game companies are.

I don't have a third one.

1. Rockstar's crunch culture - One of the most successful companies in the gaming medium, absolutely raking in the money through GTA alone, and yet its upper management of sociopaths is content with ruining the lives of employees by denying them a social life altogether. It's sickening. I know crunch culture is a common thing when it comes to video game development, but Rockstar have taken it to an absurd degree. I can't ever look at one of their games the same way.

2. PlayStation Classic - Even I'm skipping this, and I've got a hard-on for the PS1 the size of Florida. It's just an embarrassment in a myriad of ways, and raises further questions as to what the fuck is going on over at Sony right now (skipping E3 could easily be its own contender on this list). Why did they put zero effort into something that could so easily have been great? Why does Sony not care one iota for its legacy? Why on God's green earth is BATTLE FUCKING ARENA TOSHINDEN INCLUDED IN THIS PIECE OF SHIT?!

3. Switch's anemic line-up of exclusives - Nintendo blew their load in the first year of the Switch quite clearly. Pokemon and Smash are too little, too late, and even if I did care about them I couldn't play them anyway because I sold my Switch. It was getting zero use.

Lots of votes for Fallout 76. It's a shitastic game clearly, but I can't care enough to vote for it. I'm not that invested in all things Fallout and it's a game I can easily ignore.
