No way it's just me, right? Like, it was so weird for me to load up my brand new switch and not find a demo for some of the systems biggest titles. I felt that when we entered the 360/PS3 generation, demos were gonna be so much more prevalent now that there was an online market for users to access easily on there fancy new machines, and for awhile, I felt like things were looking good on the demo front. At the time(of owning a PS3), I felt like there was a pretty wide selection of demos to choose from, and just believed that at a certain point, most games(if not every) on these platforms would have a demo to try out. Unfortunately for us however, this never happened. Off the top of my head, there aren't playable demos for games like:

- Bloodborne
- Uncharted 4
- God of War
- Dragon Quest XI
- Breath of the Wild
- Mario Odyssey
- Red Dead Redemption II
- Spiderman

AND THAT BLOWS MY MIND. Now I know what some of you are thinking; "hey man, some of those games had timed demos and betas that you had access to, so if you really wanted to try it out, you had your chance", and to that I say: FUCKING WHY? Why did I lose an opportunity to test a snippet of a game out just because I wasn't playing it during the designated time they had their demo open for? Take Bloodbornes network test for instance; that shit was open for like 2-3 hours, very late at night, for three days, and you needed to have an invite to said network test to even play. Yeah, it was a network test, but why didn't they just release that demo permanently like 1 or 2 months before the game released? Give those who missed their chance another shot? Those E3 demos that some of these games had showing on stage floors at a convention, why weren't those ironed out and thrown onto the PSN /Xbox Live/Eshop? I find myself making excuses for some of these developers, thinking "oh, it's taxing and a waste of resources for some of these companies to bother with a demo, they're probably crunching or some shit", but then:

A) I'm making excuses for SOME major publishers who definitely have the resources to allocate some of their time and effort into pumping out a demo of their upcoming blockbuster.

B) This would essentially be advertisement for their upcoming title, which I would assume is a good thing in most cases(yeah it might harm those "Andromeda" exceptions since it'll do nothing but show just how rushed the game was).

It's just so weird to me, and a huge shame that I can't try out some very well received games(likes Spiderman, or Mario Odyssey, or Dragon Quest XI) just because there isn't a demo available to me on their respective networks. Maybe it's been talked about before here or back on GAF, and a solid answer was given at that point in time, but i'm honestly surprised by the lack of demos in this day and age, and hopefully someone here can give me a good answer/explanation for this.

because they aren't really worth it for large budget titles. they're better off making a flashy trailer which costs less and doesn't take developers' time. here's a video on it

Maybe they feel having a Demo would actually hinder sales from people trying the game out and not like it haha. Have to say that Automata having a demo cemented my purchase of it, and became one of my fave games. Would never have even looked at the series without that demo.

They're too costly to make from a resource perspective, and risk negatively impacting a game's sales.

They instead will put out a Beta for people who are already bought in.

Replaced with online beta's because they work better in terms of promotion.

They lower sales and cost money to make. The question is why are people still making demos

Probably because demos have kept me from buying a bunch of games I would have bought otherwise.

I assume im not the only one.

Yeah, I don't get it, I've bought many games because I enjoyed the demo. But the opposite has happened too, so yeah.

same with me, totally wrote it off because it was PG but that demo had me at instant purchase

on the other hand, i was totally looking forward to Onrush until i played the demo/beta and cancelled my pre-order quicker than anything because it played horribly

In the PS1/2 era button mashing kids with low attention spans were content enough to be entertained with whatever a magazine CD had, which pleased cheap-o parents instead of $60 purchases.

I always thought that was bad for business.

That's not going to happen.

Same..No way I would've gotten into the series if it wasn't for Automata demo. I was so impressed that I played original nier 1 immediately after playing demo and then preordered Automata. Both are some of my favourite games ever now.

Would also love to see something like PT done again. Announcing a game via a cryptic demo is such a brilliant idea. Although I understand not every franchise will be able to do it.

Alright, that sadly solidified my "B" point hypothetical, along with other good reasons as to why demos just aren't worth it anymore. What a crying shame.

Always thought that only made sense for MP heavy titles, but I guess that explains the network tests for stuff like Bloodborne and Nioh. Again, what a crying shame.

Man, when i was too poor to buy games but had a console i used to replay demos over and over

I think some companies just make betas now, they make them pre order bonus and they use people as free testers.

On the flip side of this, I've bought a few games I would have never even considered because I loved the demos.
I had a similar experience with Red Faction Guerrilla. Heard and saw very little of it, but playing the demo was an instant sold for me, so I guess I took that anecdotal experience too seriously and went with the notion that "Demos = Good!", but it looks like they've done more harm for games sales than good.

Making a demo means polishing a part of the game that sometimes will not end in the final product.
It also often means making hacks to make it look more finished than it is (depending when it's out compared to the final game) or to lock some parts of the game.
Seeing how costly game dev is now, devs find it more interesting to invest in the final product rather than something that might change/be cut/take time to look good now when it could be done months down the line.
Doing it after the game is "done" also means more costs so less profitability and less time for devs to make patches and improve the game that people will buy.
A lot of demos back in the day also took interest from people who wanted to buy the game. Or depending the slice of the game chosen, might displease someone even if it's only 2% of the end product.

TLDR: too many drawbacks compared to what it brought.

Demo doesnt help with selling, in fact according to some statistic it impacts the final sales in bad ways. I think it may have a truth in that since slight disappointment can decrease players' interest in huge way.

That's of course in general. In specific way i think it can be pretty useful to sell game if you can tweak the mechanics a bit. As an example Nier Automata. In its case the gameplay and story are as both as good. Can you point out which demo outside Automata whose story at the end of the demo all the protagonists are dead?

That factor itself can help to boost the game's sales

Lack of demos is why I don't buy nearly as many game as I used to.

360 was awesome because damn near every game had a demo and every single Xbox live arcade game had a demo. I purchased a lot of indie titles after I got to try them out first. Now I don't.

YouTube is a huge factor when rather than dropping a demo, devs can bring in some people from the community to get some hands on and good word going. Additionally, it's far easier to find gameplay of everything than it was 15 years ago so it's really not worth it for devs to put the time in to build out a stable demo.

The GR2 demo made the game go from "huh, interesting" to "I need to buy this" for me.

One of my favorite things from the last gen was the plentiful demos. I miss them too.

Anecdotally, demos make me spend more.

Yeah it's understandable why there's not as many demos these days.
I will say though, Gravity Rush 2, Nier Automata, FFXV, Monster Hunter World BETA, all games I had literally no interest in and in the case of GR2 & Nier had no idea what they were until I played the demo, and all of them I brought and absolutely loved. Apart from GR2 I still play them regularly, like at least a few times a month.

Oddly enough, I liked XV less the more I played it(Duscae -> Platinum -> Final). I still ended up playing and beating it, but lord knows my expectations of the game dropped way low the more I played, so I guess that checks out with the stats mentioned in this thread lol

It's because too many people just played the demo for Puyo Puyo Tetris over and over and over again and never bought the actual game.

That's what caused demos to disappear. Honest. Those monsters ruined it for everybody.
