The lack of Pikmin 4 is very concerning. Miyamoto mentioned it for a couple years in a row and recently has fallen very silent on it. Considering it was "almost finished" a few years ago, where does this leave us?

The game was almost finished on WiiU, the WiiU failed, they decided to go back on it and put it on the Switch.
They probably saw they could do more on it with the new platform.

E3 2017 Miyamoto said he's not allowed to say anything about Pikmin 4, but he still decided to say "not worry, it's still coming".
It wasn't a priority at the time, most of people working on it were probably working on Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey. Those two were obviously the most important games to focus on for EPD.

I mean there's probably a good chance they'll port #3 first like they have every other Wii U game, and then maybe follow up with #4 later.

They can't release games in every series every year, y'know. I think it's amazing after all these years Nintendo continue to put out games in their more obscure franchises, such as Pikmin, Kid Icarus, Metroid, and Pilot Wings.
There have been two Pikmin games in the past five years, as long as Miyamoto is around Pikmin will be fine.
