You demanded it - and we delivered it. John Linneman has spent the last few days playing Warframe on Switch. Is this another tech showpiece from Panic Button? It certainly looks like it... And while we're here, we also show some of the improvements Panic Button made to its Wolfenstein 2 conversion in the latest patch...

Brief summary for those who can't watch:

- Resolution: Dynamic resolution in play
- Docked: Lowest 540p, Highest 720p. But it hangs in the middle most of the way.
- Portable: Lowest 432p and Dynamic so can go to 720p in no-activity areas.
- Game settings include suite of select-able settings like Motion Blur, SSAO, GPU particle density.
- Running in stress areas (like Hub) with all settings on/off doesn't yield performance benefits, but with things off the dynamic res stays closer to higher bounds more often.
- Settings on/off impacts the dynamic resolution scaler, not the performance.
- In Portable mode, all SSR is gone entirely.

- Performance: Performance slightly faster in portable in stress areas (Hub).
- Hub area only notable place where performance drops, outside of it, mostly a stable 30 FPS.

Didn't they said improvements made in developing the Switch version they applied to the other version? The framerate has been a constant complaint of mine in the PS4.

I didn't choose the "miracle" title BTW. It does sound kinda corny, I think.

panic button are wizards. can't wait to see their next switch project (besides doom eternal and wolfenstein youngblood)

yeah they implemented panic button's optimizations in the other versions

Awesome video guys, it's crazy that it's essentially locked at 30fps. It's great that Panic Button love gyro too :P

Should've said "third consecutive impossible port".

Warframe is great. Discovering it with the Switch and even if it has some severe drops when in busy environments, it's really cool to play. Killer soundtrack too.

Looking forward to watching this later. I've encountered a lot of performance issues, but overall I've been really happy with the port.

Does he do any performance comparisons between the different graphical settings?

Wow, are people really happy that a company released a five year old game that runs sub-30FPS at 432p in 2018? Unbelievable.

/s, in all seriousness great job PB! Loving the Switch version so far.

Panic button has around 4 games under their belt so I hope they keep getting better.

Going to wait for a few more patches to jump in since they also seem to improve their games post release

In what world Warframe, a game known to run even on the lowest tier Intel HD GPU, is an "impossible port" ?
I mean, I could ask the same for Doom or Wolfenstein 2 but... Warframe ?

It's cool but IMO the Switch hardware is starting to feel dated as the epiphany that it can run current-gen games with heavy optimization fades.

At the end of the day even going portable to have grainy resolution and unstable framerates around 30fps is a big sacrifice next to running a higher def, stable version on a home system IMO. Not really worth it. My Switch has just become another Nintendo delivery system at this point, or where I play indies.

Can anyone provide a brief run down on resolution and frame rate? Cheers

720p dynamic in both modes I think (rewatching, was portable's max specified?), but docked goes as low as 540p, and portable to 432p was it?

Framerate is 30fps in both but chugs to the mid 20's docked (specifically in the hub areas), but is a bit smoother in portable mode (oddly a thing, as BOTW was like this as well). Looked very smooth during normal gameplay, even with little to no frame-pacing issues, unlike DOOM.

But you should use miracle ironically when you guys do ARK Survival Evolved on the Switch.
I will be seriously impressed if that one is actually a quality port. I love that game but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't super janky on PC, and I've heard horror stories about how the console versions are even worse including on the PS4 Pro and Xbone X.

Cetus the Hub area is the only place where resolution drops so much.

Normal mission game play it stays higher.

Cetus is demanding even on PC.

From a PC gamer stand point everything current console looks dated. Switch player can find enjoyment from good graphics and 30fps, similar to how xbox and ps4 players can get from AA games at 30 vs Pc. Also the best switch graphical showcase havent truly been shown yet, there's still potential in the hardware. We haven't been witness anything graphically big yet built off of the hardware.

Now cross-platform with all platforms. Sometimes it's hard to find a squad on PS4 and the competitve modes like TDM, DM , CTF and Lunaro are empty.

The game is impressive technically and I'm glad it exists on the platform because I've been avoiding paying for Nintendo's Online service even though that will change eventually. It's a lot of fun.

It's still a bit of a cop out to me to compare it to thousand dollar pc experiences. I mean, compared to a base PS4 the Switch experience feels very annoying in high fidelity current gen ports when it barely has a locked 30fps, the resolution in TV mode is below 1080p almost always and the resolution in handheld mode is below 720p almost always, defeating the purpose of sticking with a 1080p TV for this generation in some ways and certainly defeating the purpose of having a 720p screen if games can't get up to that.

To me the good handheld home console experience is still a ways off. Resolution and stability of framerate matters way more to me than maximizing it to 4K and 60fps or 144Hz with 144fps. 30 is completely fine to me, but with below-native res and below stable 30fps it really does just feel like last-gen and the way many, many Xbox360 and PS3 games were optimized.

The Wii U at least output almost all its games in a consistent lock on 720p.

Crossplay with PC is not happening in this game ever because the PC build is updated more frequently and is ahead of other builds.
And depending on whether DE does Switch development internally going forwards or outsources it to Panic button you may have the Switch version getting updated even slower than PS4/Bone

EDIT: Oh PvP ! I forget that this game even has PvP.

They're empty because less than 1% of the players play those modes and don't want to play them. The only reason they're still in the game now because unlike the raids, they dont break with every update and require someone to fix them.

DE said today on their Nintendo stream that their goal is to release console patches all at once, I can't imagine they are going to keep using PB going forward.

Oh I forgot about the PC version being much ahead. Where is the Fortuna update on consoles yet? We have been waiting for it for so long.
Also what is this story of panic button?

It IS a blurry mess. The game is known (at least on PC) to have an overly aggressive motion blur and most people seem to turn it off.

Even in the video they posted it looked way too aggressive.

It's not. The game actually runs better on my integrated gpu computer; significantly, I would even say. PB is overrated; Wolfenstein patch 1.2 is their best job so far.

I wouldn't say they are overrated at all. They've done a fair job so far, but none of the games they ported were "impossible to port" titles. They were all either good running games on their other hardware iterations and nearly all targeted 60fps and 1080p, which meant more compromises were possible.

Nintendo should strike a deal with those guys.
After all they're so close to Retro Studios, just outright buy them, open Retro Studios 2 and call it a day. XD

Nice to hear them making another solid port by the way.
