Looks like Marvel Studios is NEEVVERRR Getting Spidey back after this and venom

They weren't anyway. They're perfectly fine with Marvel Studios making their movies for them and them benefitting from the profit. The only way they would be getting Spider-Man back is if Sony decided to sell off their movie division or if Disney just straight up dropped an amount of cash at Sony's feet that they couldn't turn down.

Of course, watch the critically acclaimed Sony Spider-Man movie bomb at the box office while Venom hits $900m.

Will Marvel follow suit & produce their own animation films like Cap, Iron man, Black Panther, etc?

I think they have potentials if live action MCU movies starts to slow down.

I think its inevitable, but worth considering is that disney/marvel release SO MANY films already that adding an animated slate of marvel movies on top of what they already do seriously risks cannibalizing profits from other films.

I said this before and I stay with it, there is zero chance that after Spider-Man 3 there will be any trace of him in the MCU ever again

Disney has very little reason to since their animated films and superhero films are already critical darlings that make gobstopper amounts of money.

Those reviews looking sweet! Sony Animation has really had a pretty tough time among other animation studios; practically their only major lifeline were the Hotel Transylvania films, not to mention the dreaded Emoji Movie last year (still have yet to watch Arthur Christmas, but heard it was good).

Very glad to see the reception it's getting; was going to watch it regardless because it looks so damn good! The Lord Miller duo have been pretty reputable, so felt optimism for Into the Spider-Verse (don't really know much about the directors so will have to check their history).

Why wouldn't Sony want Spider-Man in the MCU, they don't have to do anything at all, there's now their own distinct branding line that they can use that doesn't require him, and everybody makes money.

Yeah pretty dumb. We should be happy Sony has made an awesome Spidey film that embraces the craziness of the comics it comes from.
Speaking of which, this really reminds me of my earlier disappointment of the Spider-Man game going for that basic hyperrealism rather than taking after an artist like Immoen's style. Especially since they took so much from Slott's run and got him and his ghostwriter to help plot the game.

You misunderstand me. Marvel Studios almost certainly wants full control of the Spidey IP.

If Venom had bombed and spider verse had bombed...theres a pretty good chance Sony would be willing to make a deal. The state of their film studio is pretty precarious.

Not anymore though. Their spin off spidey films look like legitimate blockbusters...especially venom which no one understands. Imagine if that movie had actually been GOOD. It would have broken a billion easily.

No way spider verse bombs though. Its going to do at least as well as Venom.

I'd love it. Unfortunately the Avengers game is probably also gonna go for a basic MCU-inspired art style.

Most likely bullshit
Its false. They own 0% of the character. Sony doesn't even have merchandising rights anymore. Those were negotiated away back to Marvel a few years ago.

They have film rights, that's where it ends.
I know how people feel about Grace here, but I doubt she's making up what she was told by a Marvel representative and saying it on record. However it's very possible either the Marvel representative was wrong or she misinterpreted what they said. I don't know.

Mod Edit: We do not provide a platform for Grace Randolph or her content here.

I mean, you can stay with it but it's completely baseless. It's not going to happen.

The deal is working out for both companies. Sony found someone to make their Spider-Man films for them while they profit from it. And that is happening while they managed to actually find success in creating their own separate Spider-man universe without Spider-Man. They have the absolute best possible scenario right now.

Now personally, I think they might push too hard (Morbius will bomb, Venom 2 will not do as well as the first and I'm worried they're going to oversaturate with animated Spider-Man films). But Spider-Man isn't leaving the MCU.

I too am happy for Sony Animation. They always struck me as an ambitious team of artists and animators who had to make the most of the weak screenplays and concepts given more often than not.

Not to mention Spider Verse gives them carte Blanche to use a peter parker that is NOT the MCU one in their spin off films without making a mess of the MCU or needing to coordinate with Marvel.

In an ideal world the new Sony-Marvel deal extends Holland's contract in the MCU and Sony gets to use the wider Marvel universe in their animated films. I'd love an animated, more family-oriented MCU (with Spider-Man as the focus) concurrently along the main franchise.

Eh pretty certain that Angry Birds was done by the the in-house Rovio Entertainment, not Sony Animation, though you are right. Forgot both AB and PR were recent successes for a Sony Pictures in general.

Holy shit I just remembered how hard they blew it by not giving Genndy the Popeye movie.

Oh yeah. I still won't forgive Sony Animation for denying Genndy that opportunity. Well at least Into the Spider-Verse will make it up for me; at least Genndy took the opportunity to finish Samurai Jack.

She is absolutely, positively, completely wrong.

The dynamics of the Sony/Marvel relationship is very well known at this point. Sony owns absolutely no rights to spidey outside of film, and gave up merchandise rights several years ago.

This is a large part of why the Sony relationship wasnt toxic while the fox relationship WAS. Marvel cut all merchandising for the fox properties off completely to try to force a better deal.

I think this will have very strong word of mouth and repeat viewing so even if it isn't super strong out of the gate it will rake up the numbers.

Movie from day 1 looked fantastic. I think it wont do as well as Venom on the bo ww total but it'll do well enough. Will watch this, been a while since i saw an animated film in the cinema.

I see that Spider-Man brings good fortune somewhat.

Insomniac Games gets bigger with PS4 Spider-Man.

Venom smashed into $850 million box office.

And now Sony Pictures Animation with Spider-Verse.
