I'd be interested in a more mystery focused Superman game. Have murky villains to force him to sleuth them out, build scenarios where you have to watch terrible shit happen as Clark Kent (Luthor walks in and engages you in an uncomfortable chat while you can super-hear folks being pistol whipped, and he drags the conversation on and on and won't let you leave), etc.

Sounds like you want a Telltale Superman game. I have bad news for you...

You should play their Batman games if you haven't already, I think you'd like them.

The best Superman is the one in the Injustice comic/game.
To create a peaceful world, one must learns that there is an Almighty God that will always watch and judge all beings and their actions.
And boy, Superman is the best when he is the Judge, Jury, and Executioner.

This is why I always like the idea of Cosmic Armor Superman and 1M Prime Superman, he is there to deliver divine punishment across all omniverse.
I hope Rocksteady will make Supes an anti-hero character where he knows he is above the laws of common men, and with a grey moral compass as well.

Sounds more like Apollo than Superman, frankly.

As much as I want a Superman game, I'm not sure Rocksteady are the ones I want it from.

They nailed Batman, but Batman is grounded and it's easy to add a sense of progression to a character like Batman. How in the hell do you do the same with Superman without falling into the ever escalating threats trap that plagues a character like Superman.

And don't throw comics at me where he's depowered, that shit won't work in a game and will likely result in a huge backlash from people who expect to play a Superman game, not a Hobbledman game.

Kratos is a god and you power him up every game. Ya'll keep deciding what won't work, but the Arkham games have a good framework for progression. When the game starts they're all hand to hand, maybe a few have bats. Later, they've got knives, a few have handguns. By the end, they've got machine guns, pistols, bats, knives. All while you progress with new gadgets and finishers.

Superman starts out at the level he was in Action Comics #1. He's strong, he's bulletproof, he can fly. The enemies have machine guns and electric blasters. By the end, he's got all his powers and they've got giant mecha and people with superstrength.

If Batman is also in this... that'd be great

I might go so far as to call it "fine". The finest, even.

Why can't we just have a fucking Superman game without Batman in there?

It does confer the design benefit of providing the player with a built-in contrast in power dynamics. You probably appreciate Superman's insane strength and speed a lot more than you otherwise would if you take control of him after spending some time running around in a frail mortal body.

World's Finest would be cool: you do stealth/investigation sections with Bats and action setpieces with Supes.

I wonder how would a game with only 2 playable characters fit into the GaaS model though.

Y'all need to read some actual good Superman comics. Your opinion will quickly flip.

No doubt, I'm all for it. I should really have put that for a game I would have found him to be boring or hard to balance and give him good enemies to go up against. Maybe I just don't know much of his enemies beyond Zod, Doomsday? And Brainiac.

You will get, either a Batman game (as close as Arkham series as possible), with half the game being Superman (the second half), or an complete Batman Arkham game with 2 different campaigns (one for Batman, one for Superman), with heavy emphasis on elements from previous games.

You aren't getting a brand-new Superman videogame. We aren't

Yes, yes, YES!!!!!

I really hope this is legit. The Man of Steel deserves an amazing video game, and I'm confident Rocksteady can deliver one. I don't even care if they shoehorn Batman in there either.

Maybe this an expansion of the Arkham universe? That would be pretty awesome.

Only way Batman should be in this game is if you can fly him into the sun and fail the main campaign Morrowind style.

I hear this opinion a lot in real life, and it is almost always from people who have never read Superman comics.
Yup.
I can't even say I particularly love the character, to be honest, but ANY degree of familiarity with the comics (and I'm a "casual" myself with them) should prove that there have been numerous authors who managed to write very interesting stories around the character.
On a side note, I'm particularly fond of the miniseries "Supreme Power" from Marvel, which is basically a rip-off/alternate universe Superman story, and a brilliant deconstruction of his epic:

P.S. The rumor about Rocksteady working on a Superman game was already dismissed several times in the past, by multiple sources.
Not sure why it keeps emerging at this point.

Not sure how a Superman game would work, but I'm excited to see.

There was a thread about this a short while ago. I would argue that Superman being Superman, basically being a godlike figure; it wouldnt really amount to much of the gameplay is directly related to skills he does or does not have.
I would focus it around using those skills to solve a specific challenge and create all kinds of failstates, or make things more reputation based. If you level half a city during a bossfight: negative points for Supes. Not in time to catch the crashing plane? negative points for Supes. Too much negative points? You become the enemy and will be hunted.

edit:
I honestly just realized that Rocksteady probably played Megaton Rainfall and saw how perfect a Superman game it would be.

Can you imagine a Superman game looking like this. Where being OP is fine, but decisions, and stopping tragedy in time are the biggest gameplay loops. Which actually makes sense for a Superman game.

so yeah, basically this.

Can the art style not be super roided out looking toys? I don't need nightmares after seeing Lois Lane ready to bench 350 at a moments notice.

This is a more valid concern but there are ways around it.

I recommend reading the short All-star Superman comic series by Grant Morrison. 12 issues or something. It addresses everything you flag up: amazing "human" story with unexpected twists in which Superman is most definitely fallible and imperfect.

Totally agree. Cannot stand that hero
Have you read Morrison's All Star Superman and his New 52 Superman run.

I felt the same way until I read All Star & found out, too many people who write Superman just don't go the extra mile to make him compelling as a character.

EDIT:
The Zero Year story by Greg Pak is fantastic too

Aha, I hated Telltale Batman :P I'm basically thinking of the Bruce Wayne + Hush confrontation in Arkham Knight, or the opening of City.

Damn, Superman is one of my least favorite DC Hero's. Unless every enemy is made of Kryptonite, I can't see how this would make for a good game.

Can they be the ones to finally make me like Superman though?
The whole, "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" of the 1950's will forever be linked to that character to me.
Was never a fan of the movie interpretations either. Especially the current ones. Make that dude likable, like they did with Cap in the Marvel movies.
I had the same problem going in when it came to that character as well, but they did a good job of making me care. Haven't kept up on the comic side of things though.

I have faith that Rocksteady would do it justice and it'd resemble the amazing 1940s cartoons. I hope it'll take the character and setting seriously, yet portray it brightly and not make it moody as hell.

Technically Vern is the only one on this forum that has debunked Superman. Jason has debunked the other three.

I could be wrong. I'm not particularly invested in this rumor and as you know I'm done with the talking and leaking. But this doesn't sound like what I've been told Rocksteady was doing. Wasn't gonna say anything at all but since jschreier put it out there first I don't see any harm in it. I could be getting fed lies in some nefarious plot to root out leakers too. Who knows.

You guys have debunked Superman, Batman, Batman/Superman, and Justice League. No other options really make sense for a studio of Rocksteady's caliber
What if they ain't making a DC related game? Can't Rocksteady work on something entirely original and new?

This is only my opinion, but just because Rocksteady is owned by Warner doesn't necessarily mean they have to be working on a DC character, even though their Arkham series has been very successful.

Well, you forgot Matter-Eater Lad.

Legion of Super-Heroes would actually be pretty dope if they were bold enough to go for it.

I think Nirolak said they couldn't, actually. Warner Bros seems to be interested entirely in making games based on the IP they own. It's pretty novel in a way, every other developer seems to be only interested in new IP or sequels to IP they created.
