Im still getting this for Christmas from another family member. This will probably end up hackable one way or anoher which will essentially make it worth it in the long run. Plus, I own the NES/SNES classic, so this'll add to the collection of "Classics"

1. Anyone will find a way to implement features to smooth the image like on ps3, etc
2. Would Sony port this ps1 emulator to PS4?
1. I think it's likely that if/when this machine is hacked, someone will manage to surface the emulator settings, yes.

2. Sony have a capable PSOne emulator that they've ported to 3 different machines already. If they wanted a PSOne emulator on PS4 they could have ported that, so it's unlikely they will bother porting this open-source emulator.

I cringe when reviewers compare it to the NES/SNES classic...

Consoles of the 3D era are far complex to emulate.
The mini versions of NES and SNES are Sony's direct competition so those are valid comparisons. If the machine is disappointing then it's disappointing, the complexity of the emulation doesn't change that.

(Also you're overstating the complexity anyway - Sony had these games running really well on a handheld machine over a decade ago, getting these games right isn't beyond them and pretty much none of the complaints are focusing on emulation).

on the plus side, the price should tank and if modders can do some good work on this, we might end up with a nice emulation box for cheap now.

I was so hyped for this when it was announced but when every single preview was negative I cancelled my preorder. What a damn shame

I'm sad about this product being terrible. I wasn't gonna buy it because I still have my PS3 hooked up to play PSOne games; however, this makes me feel it's gonna be very poorly received and all Sony is gonna think is "yeah, let's not waste our time with PSOne emulation on PS5...."

Was so hyped to play Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, Vagrant Story on it. With all the bad news I cancelled my preorder of course.

You had one job, Sony.

The fact that they didn't consider that 60 Hz is the current standard everywhere they are going to sell this version of this stupid thing blows my mind. The fact that Nintendo had well documented issues with this before they got their shit straight with the NES and SNES Classics, and they didn't learn from that...

Was the decision to make this and the development handled by someone outside of the PlayStation division? Anyone who would work in video games and make these kind of mistakes is really bad at their job.

If I must be sincere I expect a lot of casuals to ask themselves "did PS1 games always look that bad!?", "was this game always this bad!?" after playing with the PSC.
the IGN video put it very well
"many games that are remembered as being cutting edge, now merely resemble a mess of cutting edges"
which is why i think nintendo is hesitating with N64 classic. the classic games of NES and SNES have a timeless look that looks great when upscaled, but early 3D games can look pretty bad to the average person in 2018.

Sony usually doesn't do so hot with "Me too!" devices, so I really was expecting it not be great

I didn't expect it to be this bad though.

i find it pretty funny that these reviews think a fucking CRT or scanline filter would somehow fix the visuals o_O

the games need to render at a higher res. i've been playing my PSone games without jaggies for years via emulation, that's the only way to "fix" these games. a filter wouldn't do shit. it's a shame sony didn't bother to do that. but as i said in another thread, i'm still on board for the nice mini console shell to sit on my shelf next to the snes mini and the nes mini. but i use other means to play those games because other means simply do a much better job of it.

ultimately all of these mini consoles are sat there going unused and collecting dust..but they at least look pretty doing it.

It can certainly help, would make it closer in appearance to the games on a CRT with RGB connection. I prefer a res boost too but scanlines provide an acceptable alternative if that's not feasible. I go with such a filter if I want to use reduced input latency on retroarch (have to render in software mode there, where even a 2x res boost can drag performance)

I'll be interested to see if an increased internal resolution is possible with homebrew, that happened with Virtual Console DS games on Wii U (though I don't know for sure if that works across all games without issue). I would've thought the PS Classic would at least have enough headroom for 2x res but that is admittedly pure speculation

This thing is worse than I could've imagined, Sony saw Nintendo making easy money with classic consoles but they didn't want to put any effort into it.

Is anyone really surprised by these reviews? It's so obvious whoever was responsible for managing this product only looked at it as an easy paycheck and little more than that.

Hopefully enough customers don't buy into this so it doesn't turn a profit. Aggressively lazy product design shouldn't be rewarded IMO.

So the version of RE1 that's on it, is it the Dualshock version of the Director's Cut with the terrible music, or is it the regular Director's Cut with the original good music?

This is damn depressing . I loved the original PlayStation and it deserves better than this sad attempt. Especially when selling for $100 .

Just got home from work and saw some reviews up on Youtube. Finally, some direct feed footage at 60fps.

Going through the Tekken 3 footage at 1:35 in this review frame by frame, you can clearly see every 5th frame is duplicated (so the pattern for every six frames is 1 2 3 4 5 5). Confirms once and for all that there is no speed up in emulation for PAL games. Disappointing. Guess it's finally time to cancel my pre-order.

Think it's fair to say the advert is by far the most well produced aspect of this whole thing, certainly appears to have had a disproportionate amount of care and attention put into it

Oh god, underwater Tekken D: Not quite as crippling as PAL Street Fighter 2: TWW on SNES but goddamn it's hard to watch

What the fuck Sony.
Why even bother, when clearly you don't give a shit.

I guess I cancelled my pre-order. I was holding strong, I really wanted one, but the final straw was how many PAL versions of games they're using which seems like such a weird oversight. I had no issues with the game selection, it being barebones as an offering is fine because I just wanted to play the games. But if they're caring so little as to not have all the US versions of the games which actually hinders the gameplay of the games itself due to the 50Hz difference, then I don't know if I want to pay that much for something that seems to slapdash.

Maybe they'll offer a reissue at a later date with the updated region versions of the games, then maybe I'll get it. Also the lack of Dualshock was the first thing to make me reconsider my pre-order, so maybe there will be another version with those as well.

Well, now I want to see a nintendo 64 one.
It will only consolidate that n64 was the better console in fact. (sorry ff7, 8 and 9...)

What a joke, SONY should be ashamed. To be out classed on a tech level, by Nintendo is nothing short of pathetic and a utter disaster lol

and to be honest they have more reason to be excited becuase the japanese lineup is much better

Ha aye, they're lucky to get all the SHMUP love! Especially harsh considering 5/8 of the western exclusive games are PAL versions. Rayman's the only game I'd personally miss from ours (Oddworld would be too if it wasn't PAL...)
