Two epic fistfights between bitter rivals.

Two epic fistfights between a dying man and his lifelong enemy.

In one corner, we have Arthur Morgan vs. Micah Bell.

RDR2_Screenshot-086-min.jpg

(Couldn't find a screen of them fighting, so here's them together)

In the other, we have Old Snake vs. Ocelot.

Solid-Snake-Metal-Gear-Liquid-Snake.jpg

Both have amazing quotes. Both are built up throughout the entire game. Both have huge emotional payoffs at the end. Both are followed by the death of the lead character (Old Snake less obviously so, but he only has a year to live at the beginning of the game). The main difference is that Arthur loses and has his friend John take up the mantle years later, while Snake wins his fight.

Which do you prefer, and why? I honestly can't choose right now, and will wait to see what other people say.

I think I prefer the end of Metal Gear Solid 4, but I definitely thought of the same comparison when I was fighting Micah. The end of MGS4 has the best transition in video gaming from the bit between MGS2 and MGS3, though, so can never be topped.

I love Red Dead Redemption 2, but I don't know if I'd call the final fight itself extremely memorable. It's more the weight of the confrontation or emotional payoff as you aptly put it, if anything. Same as when John, eventually unloading, lifts that weight.

I can't comment on the Metal Gear Solid one.

That totally counts as part of it, though. At least, I think so. It's a series of events more than a straight up fight, but the fight is the crux of the ending.

The title of this thread alone is going to be a spoiler for anyone that knows how MSG4 ends... Thanks OP.

MGS4, it's honestly not even close imo. Was a decade of build up and just perfectly done with all the past themes, UI and fighting styles.

The Micah fight is not what I'll remember about RDR 2's climax, especially not after the scene where you say goodbye to your horse and give John your hat.

Most of the back ~5th of red dead was a poor mgs4 imitation. Still a great game, but none of the moment to moment beats come close to the classic.

Yeah as soon as seen the title I though it's pretty easy to work out from that how RDR2 ends.

Good luck op

Thing is though that as good as RDR2's is, the fight is interrupted without a proper conclusion. (until later which was great)

MGS4's end was a triumphant victory for Snake though.

The one where the villain has a long, complex history with the hero and isnt characterized from the first scene of the game as being a racist, sexist asshole

It's no secret that I didn't like RDR2... I'm honestly shocked that anyone found these comparable.

OP done fucked up. Glad I finished the game since I'm really sensitive to spoilers. But if I hadn't and I read that thread title I'd be pissed. Definitely don't want to know the last boss is a fist fight, or anything hinting at it at all.

On topic though, MGS4 by far.

Rdr2's final boss is greed. The entire game's theme is about the dangers of avarice and the plight of the oppressed. And the real villain (Dutch) gets away.

So, while I do love the game, the topic doesn't really make much sense to me.

I don't think RDR 2 really has a final boss, if that makes sense. Sure, you fight Micah... but it never really was about that.

Your title itself is a spoiler dude. I don't give two fucks cause I finished the game but.. think about those who didn't.

Besides... Metal Gear Solid 4 obviously wins the duel, its final boss being the climax of an epic series.

If anything, I don't like RDR2's chapter 6 finale on account of the lead up to that tussle on the mountain in RDR2 not making a lick of sense whatsoever.

Do we really want to compare the nerve wrecking idiot Micah to the legendary Ocelot?

Say what you will about the game itself, but MGS4's final boss is the kind of encounter creative talents would spend decades trying to replicate the same level of emotional weight associated with it.

Updated the title so it's less of a spoiler.

I'd pick MGS4 though, you had a buildup of 10 years, so there is so much history there. I did love RDR2 though. It just didn't have the same weight there for me.

The fight in MGS4 was better but the actual ending was wayyyyyy better in RDR2.

MGS4 just didn't know when to stop and shit itself so hard. Much like Meryl's husband.

MGS4's is just more memorable.

It basically goes through the history of all the games.

The epilgoue of RDR2 though. Thats the good shit.

Yeah.

Micah was just a shit heel. There wasn't a real rivalry between Arthur and him. It was just he ratted out the gang, and kept lying to Dutch by "being loyal" and enabling him to just be a shit. The real point of RDR2's ending was Arthur finding some form of redemption in the time he had left and ultimately seeing that Dutch lost the plot and finding his redemption through getting John, Abigal and Jack out.

If you do the "get John out" path, Arthur just keeps saying "I won".

Micah was never important.

MGS4 by a country mile.

The fight with Micah looks and sounds cool but we don't really give a shit about the character.

As much as I love RDR2, the final fight with Micah starts to drag on and on. It's far from the most memorable moment in the game, especially being immediately preceded by Arthur saying goodbye to his horse or giving his hat to John, or the immediate aftermath of watching the sunrise a final time as visions of the buck dance in his head. The fight itself is clunky in comparison to those moments. I didn't really like MGS4 and didn't bother completing it, so I can't speak to that fight, but I have no trouble imagining it was better from a gameplay perspective than the Micah fight.

I didn't expect that Rockstar was inspired this much by MGS :P
even that "loyalty to the end" of Arthur seems to me inspired by Snake Eater's theme, though i don't know for sure.
Snake vs Ocelot was much, much better. Ocelot is a much better character than Micah, and the direction/choice of music was better in MGS's fight and ending overall.

That fist fight with Micah is actually dreadful and drags on to the point that the game actually runs out of dialogue.

Man... That fight in Red Dead Redemption II felt so clunky and janky compared to the one in MGS4.

So yeah, I prefer MGS4's by a very long shot. No contest.

If you just mean final bosses, MGS4 is better. If you mean general ending, the simple credits montage of RDR2 is better than Big Boss basically taking hours to read War and Peace or whatever and then dying.

Man I'm on chapter 3 and skipped the thread to just post.

The thread title definitely has me thinking that Arthur will come down with a disease at some point.

I can't see any other way the game will relate to MGS 4.

Man I hope I'm wrong.

Back out of the thread.

The knife fight with Micah if Arthur has high honor is actually pretty memorable because Arthur completely demolishes Micah which is pretty satisfying. I don't think most people have seen it though, since the other choice is more popular, and people usually go for the money if they're specifically playing a low honor Arthur. But try it, its impressive. It even affects the epilogue when Micah shows up again.

Micah is not a well developed antagonist at all, but MGS4 is so ridiculous that I'm not sure they can be compared.

Fighting Micah has a whole different ethos to it than fighting Ocelot. Ocelot has games and decades worth of buildup but Micah is really that much of a dick that it seems different. Micah is essentially responsible for everything bad that happens in both games.

This really. I definitely do think it's memorable however not in the way that it was some epic showdown in gaming history, but that the weight of it with all the emotions involved was so damn heavy.

I enjoyed both but few games final showdowns hit me as hard as RDR2's so that's my vote.

MGS4's ending was ridiculous. Everything about that last fight was so awesome.
