"The holiday selling season — October, November and December — critically important to our company. We typically do, in the Americas, about 60% of our revenue during that time frame. The reason that it's so significant is first, our products make great gifts. Whether you're talking about Nintendo Switch, whether you're talking about Nintendo 2DS, we really do well with that gift-giving occasion."

It's fascinating how all important to Nintendo the Holiday season is. I still don't approve of leaving everything to the end of the year like they did this year, however, hopefully they start balancing things out more evenly like they did last year.

Maybe next year's major releases will be spread out.

Obviously, holiday season is important for hardware.

Feels like Nintendo often pushes games that are ready to the end of the year when they don't have a lot to begin with.
I think 2013 had a Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda game in the same month?

Hopefully 2019 is more balanced so they don't need to rely so heavily on the holidays every time

Even with a more balanced lineup over the year, Nintendo has always had a huge Q3 and it wont change any time soon.

It doesn't matter how balanced the year is. 2017 was balanced with Nintendo titles, but that doesn't change how much money comes during the holiday season.

I was hoping they're more balanced, pretty telling on their first party output on early half this year. Next year would definitely be better though
This statement isn't about this year, it's about every year. Nintendo games sell better during the holidays regardless of their release schedule. Even on Wii where Smash Brawl and Mario Kart released in March and April, the majority of Nintendo's sales come from the holidays. This has nothing to do with release schedule.

I can only speak for myself but speaking about this year only about the Switch and those years on the 3DS and Wii U life time it feels like the abandon the rest of the year just to have big holidays. Usually the Japanese 3rd parties tends to release in other periods to balance Nintendo's heavy ended end of the years but there wasn't much this year.

This year plus how they handle the way they announced games this year cooled me off on the Switch some.

Most companies that deal in consumer goods will generate most of their revenue in the holiday season though. I'm sure you can say the same for both PlayStation and Xbox.

My bad, I thought they mean this year. It makes sense since Nintendo sells TONS during Nov to Dec but I never thought it's as high as 60%

This made no sense. Reggie's statement is generally every year. The holiday season isn't even over this year so how could Reggie claim they made 60% of their revenue from the holiday season this year?...

Again, this isn't about release schedule. Nintendo Switch isn't going to sell 2 million in April because they released Mario Kart that month. It will sell 2 million in December if they release nothing that month. This is simply how the holidays work for video games, especially when you have a large market for children like Nintendo does.

Well, it's not like they had much of a choice. Smash was for sure on a tight deadline, and likely Dec 7 was a "we can barely do that" date. But it had to come out this year, to hit that target. I doubt Pokemon could've come out much earlier than it did. Mario Party may have been the only game that maybe was "done" behind the scenes around e3, and could've come out anytime.

It's not specific to Nintendo, it's pretty much the same for all video games and toys companies. Maybe sometimes it's not 60%, but 40% minimum.

Revenue is always at its peak in the 3rd quarter because of this thing called seasonality for how things sell especially in retail at different times of the year.

Even your example regarding last year still had NoA revenue peaking in the third quarter because that's how it is.

I disagree. If they released gen 8 in April of next year (which they won't) it will sell more then 2 million Switch units. Titles sells consoles.

I don't have the data in front of me but I'm willing to bet that part of the reason Sony is killing it sales wise year round is because they don't save their big titles for the end of the year.

This doesn't mean Nintendo (or anyone) only release big titles during the Holidays.

You can 'disagree' all you want but Nintendo has released all of their major IP outside of the holiday season and they never come close to selling 2 million consoles. Pokemon has had the chance to do this many times back when it launch in March, and it's never come close. X/Y didn't do it in October either.

Games do sell consoles, just most people are buying consoles during the holidays. That's why software sales also go way up at this time.

Seems standard to me. Nintendo just feels different cause they nornally lack 3rd party big hitters to pad out the rest of the year

This is the same for everyone in the console business...

As pointed out above, this was also the case last year when Switch launched in March. The holiday quarter is always the highest by far.

Are we considering the launch of the Switch? Because that launch Was not guaranteed to be successful coming off of the Wii U. Consider your counter arguement to this statement because there were a lot of questions and uncertainties before the Switch launched. In retrospect it seemed like a no brained it would've been a success but at the time before launch there were doubts and hype.

All I can and will say is that I hope gen 8 launches before the September to Black Friday time frame because why would the casuals buy the consoles just before they have to buy their kids or family a Christmas present anyway.

The Switch is extremely popular right now. More so than the GBA or GBC. Because of what the Switch is i see it selling a ton earlier in the year then their previous consoles handlhelds if the right title is released.

Someone literally posted the numbers for 2017 showing the bulk of business is done in the 4th quarter of the calendar year. This is true for Sony, Nintendo and MS every single year regardless of what games launch prior to it.

This isn't really a matter of a opinion, just go look at the numbers. Pokemon has launched outside of the holiday season often. So has Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart and Smash Brothers. None of them have ever changed this trend.

And since you just mentioned Sony, GoW and Spider-Man months had the console sell in the 300-400k area. This November they'll be above 1.5 million.

Yeah, the context of the argument/debate we were having slip my mind. We were just talking about NA only. My brain decided to not show up.

I fully concede the argument.
