I'm perpetually confused.

Yeah, the line between accessories and hardware seems a little bit blurry here, but at least there's no confusion between software and accesso...

Will the Pokemon + Pokeball bundles count fully towards the software total revenue wise? And what about Mario Party + Joycons? I think that might help a tiny bit when it comes to comparing revenue vs last November.

...OH NO!!

Yes. Like Wii Fit and Wii Play, if an accessory is bundled with a game disc/cart the total spend is allocated to the game.

Is the confusion due to VR non-exclusives making it difficult to pick what to count sales against or some other reason?
Anyway I guess Sony considers it all PS4 SW umbrella in their quarterly reports too, so it's not without precedent.

It was a joke.

its also strange to me how Xbox could be flat when the X came out last year...did the userbase who was buying the X just eat the S users? Its like the exact opposite of the Pro and base PS4

Wait huh? xbox has been up YoY most months. more than ps4 although i'm a month or two behind on that calculation so it may have changed

Surely these insiders can't see total sales, rather a small slice of the pie?
I'm not including Mat Piscatella since he is a known NPD employee.

Depends.

I can see nation wide sell throug data. A lot of it.

Of course no one can see the entire picture. Literally the only time that becomes visible to anyone is when all data is compiled and released per NPD.

But its not like my visibility to the market is exactly small.

Even that's missing digital sales on Nintendo platforms. Which these days is a decent piece to be missing (at least compared to their last platform).

So you're saying they understimated how much they could sell in BF because the console sold out? I already answered that in my first reply.

They didn't underestimate demand they just set aside a limited number. They knew the popularity of the price based on last years sell outs. They are reducing promotional costs. It's stated on the outlook through end of fiscal year in the Q3 docs

Operating income is expected to be significantly higher than the July forecast primarily due to the impact of the above-mentioned higher-than-expected game software and PS Plus sales, as well as expected reductions for promotional and other costs related to PS4 hardware, based on the recent strong business momentum

I'm really active on Twitter as well, but yeah I'm sticking around Era. I don't think I could ever really leave, even when people upset me or stress me out.

At the end of the day I'm always glad to be a part of the sales community and give back what I can

I can understand, some of this stuff just gets toxic. Those of us who don't comment much really appreciate the work you do. All of the insiders. I really don't get it. Things escalate so damn fast. You'll see one post praising the work outside of work you do, just for the interest of the community, and then the next calling you a liar, threatening to out you and by extension your livelihood, going from one to a billion in a heartbeat.

Internet really sucks sometimes.

Sane datanerds love you guys though!!!

Yep, I appreciate all the insider people and everyone who gives thoughtful discussion/analytics. I'm a big fan of numbers and data but I don't post a whole lot, especially in the middle of the day in a busy thread, as my work can rip me away for hours at a time into a sterile room where I can't have my phone.

You are literally the reason I regularly check the NPD and NPD prediction threads. Your insights are invaluable in an industry that is nontransparent about numbers. Much appreciated!

Maybe I'm treading where I'm not supposed to but, that data you see only pertains to one chain right (I know the chain but of course I wont say it)?

So yeah a big slice but not the whole picture, if my surmising is correct.

Put this in the other thread but I'm kinda disappointed Nintendo hasn't been marketing Labo more. I've been one of the people saying holidays is where it's performance will really matter but they don't seem to be pushing it like I thought they would. All focus is really on Smash and Pokémon.

im not talking about the increase in forecast, get away from that. i am talking about how much they have shipped based on their general forecast for the year. black friday was absolutely apart of that, and they underestimated how much they could sell
They will have known that they could have shipped much more for Black Friday based on last year's performance (similar performance with a worse deal and also fast sellouts). The leading theory is that they didn't want to ship more than they have because it eats into profit when you discount by more than $100. People who only buy the system only for such bargain prices are probably also less likely to buy tons of software, so it's a gamble as to whether selling at this price with unlimited quantities brings in the wished-for profits, I think.

If Sony had a 249 Blops 4 bundle in December, would they get to 1M?
Probably, if not more.

Last year they only did a $50 off on PS4pro and PSVR bundles in December afaik, and they still hit 1m.

If they get the COD (and maybe another more family friendly one) bundle at $249 for a week before Xmas and advertise it, they should have a nice December.
Now IF they are thirsty for more MAU and decide to go $199 for 1 week, with enough stock, sky's the limit (but December is generally not as price sensitive, so it might be leaving $ on the table in the end).

I think it's time for everyone to agree that it bombed/failed. It had no legs since launch, and struggled to sell through the initial shipments. Retailers are not going to give up coveted shelf space during the holidays for a poor selling larger box item. You're not going to have that kind holiday item performance without a solid sales and interest footing to begin with.

Xbox (all models) will be $50 off dec 2nd to dec 25th.
That is a bad deal for December, even more so compared to last year's deal of carrying Black Friday week price cuts through the whole month.

Last year the cheapest bundles were $229 (the standalone model was $189). $249 isn't going to be moving much when they have offered the same price or lower since 2016 in addition to Sony dropping the Black Ops 4 bundle to $249.

The slim did go down to $249 the week before Christmas. It's the only reason PS4 hit over 1M in December.

Funny I thought I remembered that and when doing a google search I couldn't find the announcement.
Fully expecting Sony to go $249 with the Slim again this year though.
