If someone cant afford a PSVR headset and lives near College Station that will be able to pick it up and is interested in playing astro bot I would be happy to lend it for a few days :)

Good Aggie hahaha. I just picked up my PSVR at the Target in College Station last Wednesday thanks to the AstroBot/Moss bundle and my hype for Tetris Effect.

Picked up the superhot bundle, but Astrobot was sold out everywhere. Ordered from Gamestop but it will not be here for another week. I guess I will just have to get by on Beat Saber which is amazing

I have had psvr since launch, bought the game at launch, after reading a bunch of hype. Played the first world. And thought yeah this is good, but not Mario good. didnt play for several weeks. Then finally jumped back in and played some more. Beat the next 2-3 worlds in one or two sessions, and was just kinda gobsmacked. game is legit, and I had literal smiles on my face. Now the game doesnt have the perfect control and variety of moves of mario. But just the sheer creativity, and level design of a VR game is amazing. Every gamer needs to play it. it is akin to playing Mario 64 for the first time.

This game is as great as the praise its been getting.
Beat the first world yesterday and the music and visuals were a treat. Its been awhile since I played a game and thought, this is a great weird Japanese game. The amount it requires you to look around to get collectibles was so much fun and the camera fixed on the ground while you jump up platforms really gave me the size perspective that gives it the magical feel.

I never played Mario 64 (I switched to PS1) by this point, but after having played the Demo over the weekend, I'm kinda sold. PSVR as a whole—I'm sold on for sure though, so I can't wait to add new games to my collection.

January we get exclusive Ace Combat PSVR content. 3-4 hours long, but that's pretty meaty in VR in my opinion, considering the intensity. It also has some sort of "Free Flight" mode and an airshow mode in VR.

Ok I jumped in at the deal for PlayStation®VR ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission and Moss Bundle as I had some Sony reward points. Got it for $90 :)

Any other must-have games for PSVR? Ay free games on PS+?

$40 on PSN. I'm sure it's great but seems a bit pricey. Surprised Sony doesn't have it on sale for Cyber Monday.

It is and more though. Can you name another game that is closer to "VR Mario 64" moment for you?

No, but the game isn't close to being the equivalent of Mario 64 for VR. It's a pretty alright platformer that does very little new except for the viewpoint, it has ample camera trouble (especially when sitting down) and some wonky precision jumping. It's good. Very good at places. Not in the same ballpark as Mario.

Moss was better, I thought - though very different I admit.

That looks rad. I tried Ultrawings and it's fun, but the flat shaded graphics don't really do a great job at creating the sensation of height. I've never played an Ace Combat game. They're fairly arcadey right?

I don't agree that Astrobot has camera problems, but if you're implying that Mario 64's camera is better then you're nuts. I also don't think Astrobot has problems with precision jumping. I've been consistently impressed by how precise the jumping is actually.

Yeah very, it's more of an action game than a sim. Ultrawings has some form of flight modelling and is better in that regard, I had a lot of fun in it even with the basic graphics.

Fair enough. I still have yet to get Moss but the demo was quite something.

I've never had camera problems during my two playthroughs and I've completed 90% of the challenge modes. If anything its more precise than any other platformer I've ever played because of the depth perception.

The VR itself is the "new" part as much as the third dimension was in Mario 64

There is a free one but I would recommend 'Titans of Space plus' its $5 and even more of a get high and chill experience.

Tracking/Camera problems on PSVR can be a system-wide issue, especially when sitting down. Have you tried to play around with camera placement, sitting distance, room lights on/off, recalibrating, etc? Software updates have made it much better since launch and it took me a while to find the right set-up, but I haven't had major problems with it since.

And I have to disagree about the precision jumping. I thought the laser beams coming out of Astro Bot's feet were a genius design decision for a VR platformer where you can't always see his shadow but have to quickly make judgements about your position in 3D space. Definitely stick with the game even if you're unimpressed so far, it keeps coming up with new inventive ideas until the credits roll.

Camera trouble?

Just admit it: you've never played Astro Bot. There's no shame in that.

To be fair I have had camera trouble but I believe it to be an issue with my setup or something not the games fault. I still need to try the light test to fix it, I get pretty drastic camera drift over time.

Picked this up yesterday. Im enjoying for sure. Sort of restored my faith in VR in how seamless and non jank the whole experience is.

Im still early, just now reaching the world 2 boss and perhaps its too early to say one way or the other but I don't believe it to be the revelation that Mario 64 was at the time of release. As cool as the VR is its still a much smaller game in scope, or at least compared to what 64 was to its era. I think of it more as a Crash Bandicoot, funneled experience.

Its an amazing game but I don't think Id tell a friend to buy a PSVR just to experience it like I would have Mario all those years ago.

We're getting a bit off topic for this thread but Ace Combat in PS VR is LEGIT. Freaking amazing. I played one of the missions, about 10 minutes - same part as the first 45 secs in the above video - at PAX Aus last month and was VERY impressed. The cockpits are very detailed, sound, scenery and overall graphics are great (was probably running on Pro) and the flying is amazing. I was leaning and turning almost 180 to track enemy planes, looping and rolling, below/above/through clouds, and had a blast in that short play session. The only slightly less than great part was the canned take off sequence where you see other planes crash, get shot at, etc - felt a little contrived/missing some urgency/atmosphere. A few hours content will be good but I wish there was even more :). Hopefully we'll see follow-up DLC or addition to the series with more VR support.

I played with a DS4 but there are two flight stick controllers coming (Hori and Thrustmaster).

There's a lot of things you wouldn't do today that you would have done 22 years ago. That's to do with Your relative age not the quality of the game. I can wait a few days after buying a game before I unwrap it to play it, it doesn't mean the games today are worse in quality then they were 22 years ago.

Ok I want a PS5 with PSVR V2 and full backward compatibility.

That should be technically doable, right ?

I am hoping for this. Make it wireless and I may be in.

I really, really want to play Tetris Effect and I'd like to play Derecine too. Three games makes the platform perk up my ears more.

It's not even fair how good this game is, I think it's my new #2 right behind god of war. They just nailed everything! I haven't smiled like a dumb kid playing a game since I dunno, maybe katamari?

Today I sat down to play Astro Bot. I started off by going back to an earlier level looking for any of the little bots I missed, and then played level 2-2. And then put it up for the day, because after a level like that my brain was full. That was just about as close to perfect and satisfying as anything I've played.
