My hot take:
I loved every uncharted when they came out but none of them held up (not even 2)
To me, pre-reboot tomb raider was never good.

I guess we all lose.

I do still like them but I agree to some extent.

It's like a very entertaining action blockbuster that you don't really want to revisit. I think only 2 really holds up for me because it has a few of those awesome memorable moments.

Tomb Raider feels definitely more open, more exciting and more replayable to me. Uncharted looks insanely good but its gameplay has always been fairly generic (if well done) shootout sequences and unexciting platforming, with plenty of padding to boot. I haven't played Shadow yet but aside from Anniversary I enjoyed the Tomb Raider games more than any of the (early) Uncharted games. To be fair I have not played the 4th one, but neither did Shadow as said.

Overall? Not really, no. Combat, traversal, set peices, puzzles, story, characters, graphics, animations. All worse in tomb raider.

In some aspects though, yes, namely the sense of exploration. But as shadow proved, that sense of exploration wasn't enough to carry the entire game when they ripped out the combat.

It's just a bit of a mess of a series tbh and I'm honestly thankful it's over.

The strength of Tomb Raider was that it didn't rely so heavily on smoke and mirror illusion of danger set pieces like Uncharted did.

Smoke and mirror?
Uncharted became so popular and influenced so many because its set pieces did not overly script player's involvement. There was a level of fluidity that you could experience while traversing these set pieces.

Uncharted's gameplay is good if you like really crouching behind waist high objects and shooting waves upon waves of enemies in between cutscenes. Because that's most of UC1-3.

Seems like thats just how you played UC. You can definitely be aggressive, traverse the environment while fighting enemies on multiple levels, using multiple strategies (take out from cover, melee, pull from ledges, gunplay).

The exploration in shadow was super underwhelming. When they actually left you alone I thought it was really good there just wasn't enough of it, especially at a time.

Tomb Raider reboot played so much better than Uncharted that it's not even a contest. Most people really don't remember how poorly those games played in comparison to the peers. Like have you ever tried to use melee in Uncharted 2 or 3?
Not a fan in Uncharted 3 at all due to enemies just rushing you to force the semi-QTE melee trash, but I think it's really good in Uncharted 2. I love running torwards an enemy using hip fire to reduce their health and stop them from shooting me, and then hitting the melee button once for a cinematic finisher. It's sort of what RE4~6 do, but without requiring you to hit specific body parts, due to both the hit reactions not being anywhere near as refined and also it just not suiting the "running around everywhere" style of gameplay.

Uncharted is better than TR is nearly every regard.

- Characters
- Set peices
- Story
- Gameplay

The aging statement doesn't make much sense, games like UC2 are still a blast today.
UC2 was my favorite game of last gen. Rise of the Tomb Raider beat it out in game play handily. Uncharted 3 and 4 as well. Rise played better than all of them.

I think a lot of people in this thread are confused and thinking about the new reboot trilogy.
Also, Underworld is a mess and the gunplay is worse in these games than it is in Uncharted. How can you even compare something with lock-on to free aim?

On a side note, and since some people are talking about the new games, TR2013 was released 2 years after UC3 and 6 years after UC1 so comparing these trilogies seems unfair since the TR reboot relied heavily on what ND had achieved up to that point. UC4 and TLL destroy the new TR games.

Anniversary and Underworld are more fun than the Uncharted games to me. Legend not as much.

I barely remember the combat in those TR games, so I guess that's not really a factor.

Out of those three only Anniversary had good puzzles and platforming. Legend's puzzles were very simple and platforming felt awful and was always criticised by the fans of classic TR. Underworld had some good stages but overall was a mess.

Few games have surprised me as much as Tomb Raider 2013.

But Uncharted 2 is better than 95% of the games I played last gen. And that percentage includes tomb raider games

I think any developer and any gamer would choose the more memorable option at the time of release, regardless of subjective opinions about the staying power being argued a whole generation later. It's the reason why Uncharted 4 was so big, and why Tomb Raider has been following that series footsteps all the way to Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Fact is, all the games being compared feel outdated by now.

I disagree.

All Uncharted games and TR2013 are among my favourite games.
Light puzzles, good combat, laughable story but with great narrative, amazing presentation. Linear, not bloated, minimal to absent RPG mechanics. They are simply the perfect model of a single player game in my opinion.

Still nothing like the originals. I'd love proper remakes (graphics only - I wouldn't want anything else changed unless they were options) of TR 1-3. Day fucking 0! :-(

I think Tomb Raider Underworld is the best Tomb Raider game, and better than any Uncharted game, with the only thing coming close being Lost Legacy.

How's that for an opinion?

Uncharted 2, 3, 4 and LL are so far ahead of TR it isn't even a question. Just finished SoTR and it was so disappointing.

Underworld was an underrated gem, unappreciated by a modern audience more interested in flashy gimmicks than level design and thoughtful environmental puzzles. Nowadays there are a few subgenres that have left currently unfilled holes in my heart, but none are bigger than the one carved out by the adventure platformer genre TR mastered. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

That said, I love all of the Uncharted games and they have their place. I get the comparisons to Tomb Raider but they have much more in common with reboot era Tomb Raider than the older gems.

I think the reboot was better than the Uncharted PS3 trio, and I think Rise is better than 4. Not played Shadow, but I'll probably prefer it to LL.

Not for me. Tomb Raider has abysmal gunplay/combat. I think that's really important in a third person action adventure game.

And the story is trash. I don't give a shit about any of the characters.

I honestly never found the last-gen Tomb Raiders that good. They always felt like extensions of the PS1 games but the gameplay never really improved. Uncharted, for all its flaws, did improve its core combat mechanics as the series went on.

Of course, I'm the kind of person who plays Uncharted primarily as a madman who runs around stealthing and meleeing people to death/using the grappling hook in innovative ways to take dudes out vs. just Gears of War-ing it behind a wall, and I think the games are a lot more fun when you play them that way.

The TR reboot on the other hand just felt like a worse Uncharted to me, and Rise took that concept and expanded it into a pseudo-open world that did nothing for me while continuing to make Lara's character more and more unlikeable. Net loss.

That's gonna be a no from me. I think Uncharted is quite a bit better in every regard than anything from the Tomb Raider games last gen. The writing alone in Uncharted, even if not necessarily the best writing in games, has way more charm and character than all of the Tomb Raider games. The setpieces are very memorable. The gameplay is just fine too. Nothing particularly innovative or anything, but perfectly passable. Tomb Raider might edge out Uncharted from a gunplay perspective.

Well TR LAU trilogy had terrible combat though over very quickly and usually not the reason you would die but yeah I think they're better than Uncharted as well. Underworld was unfinished, but showed glimpses of an excellent dungeon crawler. Some levels were insanely well done, the game simply ended on a whimper. The camera issues, they were apparent to me. Coming off Legend the camera felt kind of ropey. Everything about Underworld felt sort of rushed to me.

TR:L was so short that I loved to replay it to find every secret, some of those gold secrets were really well hidden. It was one of my most played games during the launch period of the 360.

Anniversary was the odd game for PS2 and PC only, despite being made AFTER Legend. But ultimately came out on 360 (first episodic console release ever?) and then on PS3 on that trilogy disc anyway. Its perhaps the best one of the 3 but some things about it annoyed me for some reason. I guess I prefer the PS1 original, sans the boat controls.

Uncharted is just a glorified cover shooter. I started to see through UC2 after beating it twice, then I couldn't stomach 3 past the halfway point anymore and never played another since. Its essentially automated platforming with invisible walls, and then wave upon wave of enemies being funneled at you. Even if you finally open a sacred place, you'll get a few dozen of soldiers trying to pick you off. I prefer more exploration, less combat.

I think people convinced themselves Uncharted, or ND games in general have bad gameplay when in truth the gameplay is solid to very good. I also think Uncharted outshines Tomb Raider in every way possible but god bless, subjective art form.

I find the comparison really forced because aside the archeology both are two completely different genre.

Where is this narrative that Uncharted has trash combat coming from? I mean it was never amazing in the first 3 games but lately it seems to have gone from decent/solid to garbage for alot of people.

The open level in Lost Legacy is where Uncharted should head next and that's because it sorta kinda scratches that old school TR itch. The platforming still leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes and no. They're going for very different things. That said, Anniversary is excellent and I think it's a better game than any of the PS3 Uncharted games. Legend was a pretty big misfire for the series, though. Underworld was a step back from Anniversary as well, though I still think it's a pretty good game that's also a bit underrated. I think it's better than the most-recent reboot Tomb Raider games, at least.

Anniversary > UC2 > UC3 > Underworld > UC1 > Legend

People are starting to get confused between the different Tomb Raider series hehe.

I could do with a revisit of the last gen games, but I'd rather play the OG games or 3D Prince of Persia honestly.

A couple of areas where I prefer Uncharted over TR.

1. Story and characters - The overall cast of characters is much more memorable to me in Uncharted than in TR.
2. Multiplayer - Uncharted doesn't have revolutionary MP, but it's competent and fun, and better than any MP that TR tried.

This thread has inspire me to reinstall LAU when I get home and see how they run on my current PC. It's been a while, so I can't really comment on the hypothesis in the OP, but I will say that while I acknowledged in the past that the Uncharted games were 'better' in the sense that they were more polished and generally had better controls, writing, etc, I personally preferred LAU at the time due to the less linear, more platformy approach.

These are two fundamentally different franchises, I never got the comparison's between the two you would think with Uncharted 1's overt emphasis on shootouts would convey clearly that it's not heading in the same direction as Tomb Raider especiallly classic TR (1-3)

We used to compare Uncharted with Gears now we're doing it with Tomb Raider when di that shift occur?

Agree with TC, even the reboot are bad games, the magnetic climbing are bad game design, the puzzle are easy to figure out and i'm shocked, that a game made for 18+ gamers have to be that easy.
I'm more classic Tomb Raider fan, but at least Legend, Anniversary and Underworld are better compared to Uncharted and the TR Reboot.

Uncharted 2+3 are still the finest third-person-shooters ever made. These games are nearly perfect: They have character, atmosphere, great gameplay, good story, fun dialogue and perfect pacing. Similar to the Gears of War games.

Action-games last gen were simply so much more on-point and focused than the overly long and "open" games today. I think the last game that captured that kind of game design very well was Gears of War 4.

There were some aspects of gameplay that Tomb Raider did better but story & setpiece moments were definitely much better in Uncharted and some shooting encounters were much better than anything in Tomb Raider. So I dunno, depends what you were looking for?

Anniversary alone is better than the whole PS3 Uncharted trilogy.

What that game gave me in terms of interest, wonder and gameplay is way beyond the scintillating graphics and spectacular setpieces of a cover TPS.
