Really underappreciated game. The first half is a masterclass in level design. Piecing together the stories of the people on the ship through brilliantly paced exploration was a ton of fun. Second half fell off a bit for me, but many people enjoyed it all the way through to the end.
game is really great but the last third is somewhat disappointing...and the load times on console are too much, which sucks towards the end of the game when you have to traverse multiple areas, it adds up and gets very tedious
Definitely agree. I really enjoyed the game, especially the first half. In the later part of the game, the tedium of traveling to the different areas set in - way to much traveling and backtracking to complete one part of an objective, only to then have to travel all the way back to the mission start point.

I really liked the individual areas and lab spaces in the game, but there weren't really connected to each other in a satisfying way. It reminded me of Dishonored where each level is a contained open area, expect in Prey they tried to link each of these zones, and it ends up being kinda clumsy.

I played it recently and really wanted to like it but I just coukdn't get into it. I was only a few hours on in the game but I felt that in general, it was difficult to find alternative solutions to problems. Perhaps it's just me, but it was almost always easier to just shoot the enemies in front of me.

The only other option I was aware of was using stealth, vents and such to avoid enemies, but because I knew I wanted to explore the full level, I knew I'd want to check the room that the enemy was in, very carefully. So stealth ultimartely didn't feel like an option, the cost/benefit wasn't there. The resource gain from killing an enemy and making the room available to loot freely, felt as though it outweighed the benefits of playing more evasively.

After play the Dishonored games almost entirely in steath/no-kill, I was surprised by how little motivation I had to play this game using stealth. The stealth just didn't click for me, and I also found myself just confronting and killing the majority of enemies I encountered.

The level design is the best in video games , I remember Talos 1 like the back of my hand .

Imagine if it had VR support!

My favorite immersive sim and my GotY last year. I have gushed so many times about it that i don't know what else to say other than that peeps who enjoy these types of games shouldn't sleep on it.

I'm playing through it right now as well after the mostly positive WoM it was getting here.

It's a great game. I'm having a blast just exploring, sometimes making notes of things I need to return to when my skills increase.

I guess I'm doing a pure human playthrough as my first one (I don't trust Alex and he seems to be intent on injecting me with typhon powers, so fuck that). And this seems like one of those games where this matters.

Hopefully this choice won't bite me in the ass later.

Kind regards,

Guido

For people that are still playing Prey: once you get the toy gun, experiment with it. A lot. I only used it once or twice during my playthrough. When I looked online what uses it had, I realised I missed so much. I think I missed a lot in general. There are like 5+ ways to enter a room with a locked door, it's incredible. Gotta play it again someday.

Stellar game for me since i had soooo much fun with it. You got to take your time with it and be able to enjoy the immersive sim genre to fully enjoy it.

Btw anyone remember the level with the test chamber with one small mimic inside it and behind it were 3 different items it can mimic?

when you remove the 3 items it mimics YOU THE PLAYER but you look different... like a human looking typhon. is that like a hint for the ending?

I like how 90% of the LTTPs for Prey are along the lines of "Why didn't I play this when it came out?".

WoM has been this game's best asset, judging by peoples' surprise at what the game actually entails.

There's a part where I went "oh fuck!!" which was:

The bit where you finally meet up with Alex Yu to get the arming key and that massive fucking Typhon appears and starts smashing up the space station.

I think Talos station is one of the best-designed, most cohesively-designed settings in the history of the medium. From the intimate lived-in feel to the utilitarian layout and architecture that feels like it's a realistic station first, game environment second; the way areas connect and can be entered through logical ways, the fact that entire place is simulated interior and exterior, the way layout and narrative interweave logically.

It's the ultimate representation of the "immersive sim" design tenets.

Was definitely my GOTY. Post above me has it right, too. When have we ever seen such a logically interconnected world like this that challenged players to navigate it intelligently. What some folks pejoratively call back-tracking is, to me, one of the best things about the experience.

I wonder what difficulty folks are playing on when they complain about just being able to shoot things. I definitely recommend playing at least on Hard, as it forces you to take advantage of all the systems in play and difficulty doesn't drop off much until late game.

And for folks who have played Prey but not Mooncrash, don't sit on that either. Enjoyed every bit as much as the base game and got plenty of value out of it.

Just picked up Mooncrash in the PSN sale. Is that base as well designed as Talos?

Played a little bit of the demo on PC. It was ok but I much would've preferred an actual prey sequel.

Work
Found out Mick Gordon had done music for it and picked it up because of that reason alone. Turns out I bought an amazing game that I really, really need to go finish up.

It's not as big as Talos, and because it's a moon-base, it doesn't have to satisfy some of the same design constraints as a space station (aka, GUTS and exterior navigation). However, the level design is just as good, and you'll definitely have to think creatively about getting from point A to B. And Mooncrash adds enough new layers (rogue-like structure, characters switching, time-limits, etc) to make it really interesting. I thought I'd hate the time limit, but A) you can mitigate that with certain items and B) it adds a really intriguing risk/reward dynamic. Should you loot those apartments over there knowing that, in doing so, you're guaranteeing that rougher enemies will show up because of the lost time?

I got the impression the release period for Prey was rough. Surely it was hard to sell when even the demo showcased terrible audio mixing and input lag, both of which were then present in the full release.
I take it these issues must've been adjusted since?

It's only a flaw or weak point if you feel that variety is a necessary element for good enemy design. I'd argue it's a strength of the game and another example of its deliberate design that extends to the level design and so on

The enemy design of Prey is fantastic because of how cohesive it is. It's a game where you fight against one alien species and each stage is a readable evolution of the previous form. It reinforces the deliberate nature of the game by focusing on the singular ecosystem of an infestion with its own understandable logic of how the different types relate to each other.

While they share a visual aesthetic (makes sense since they're the same species), there is actually a lot of variety in the behaviors of the enemies, what they can do, and the tactics you need against different types.
Ho don't get me wrong: I liked that they felt like a coherent entity, fully integrated within the world building, and the overall design idea is really good.

But you mostly face phantoms and mimics, and I would have loved a bit more of visual variety: different sizes, different proportions. Sure, phantoms came in many flavors, and every variant was interesting to face gameplay-wise, but they looked really similar, which in turn made them less surprising or threatening in the long run. Given their nature, some variations would have been possible without betraying the core idea.

To give you en example, I was pretty stunned the first time I encountered a technopath: at first glance you can tell they're from the same species, but their look is different enough to make you wonder what they're capable of.

Actually bought the game for € 12 recently because I heard some great things plus it seems to be a divisive game. Normally I don't care for these types of games, but at that price sure why not. Wil be on the back burner for a while because I need to finish Uncharted 4 and Spider-Man first.

Did however start the game and played for a bit, the start of the game is pretty... uh, wow. Dunno what happened but I want to know more.

Maybe I'll pick this up. How are the One X enhancements?
This thread is great for this question: https://www.resetera.com/threads/xbox-one-x-enhanced-games-all-titles-platforms-and-details.24378/

It says:
Prey
1440p w/minor drops when loading areas
Screen space reflections, increased lighting draw distance, increased texture filtering.

Apparently, the framerate is 30fps with minor dips, but I got that from a youtube video.

It seems about the same as the Pro enhancement, which is unusual. I have Prey on both platforms, but I might play it on my Pro rather than my X simply because it's already installed and my internet sucks, lol.

Disappointingly, it doesn't seem to have HDR on either platform.

I'm not sure if the PS4 ever got a true fix for the input lag issues--there was at least one patch that solved it but introduced other issues in the process.

I bet if someone did a study on Prey's reception across platforms, PC would be significantly better than the other two platforms. Way fewer issues and better performance on PC (except for an area near the end that caused the framerate to tank, though I think that affected all platforms).

I really hope we get a sequel. I really, really hope. I'm sure it'll sell better than the first one did. I slept on it and grabbed it at $20, but I will gladly buy some Prey 2 special edition for $100. It's just an amazing title.

I think for me the experience with the first Prey colored my perceptions of this game, especially with how they handled the sequel fiasco, and I skipped it. I might pick it up though if I get some time. I've heard good stuff about it.

Prey was absolutely wonderful. The final act was a bit convoluted, but I really enjoy the way the world was built (the space station design was INCREDIBLE!), the way combat and stealth felt (everything is fair abiet intentionally clumsy), and how it felt to solve problems in a number of ways.

It isn't a game I'd recommend for everyone, but it was the absolute perfect game for me when I played it last year - it's the game that Bioshock pretended to be IMO.

Arkane handled it the right way, IMO, in that it's a total departure from the first game, and what the original sequel was going to be. It's really a shame they had to use the Prey name, honestly. I think it did more harm than good.

I got this for $5 so very long ago, and was waiting on an X patch to play it.

When the X patch dropped I just didn't have time to play it. I can't even remember when the patch dropped.

I finally tried it last night and it seems great! I mean I thought it'd be completely boring. Something about all the footage and let's plays looked just really dull. I ended up buying it for ~$10 a few months ago and still never touched it. I like the * Shock style gameplay, but it just looked so dull.

I'm not sure why it works. I think the way in which Prey is good is a delicate balance of many factors.

I even find the enemies scary in the context of the game (I thought they looked lazy, ugly, and bad in all media around the game). I think it helps that the game walks a fine line between serious and slightly silly. It's a case where the storytelling actually adds to the experience instead of taking away like 99% of games.

But it's good! I like the visuals even though I think they're literally the worst case for aliasing and current rendering tech (helps to supersample but even 4 pixels per pixel + the highest end PC AA solution leaves a lot of aliasing).

Basically the game does a lot of really terrible ideas coupled with a lot of great ideas and because they are used so carefully, the end result is very good.

Prey is incredible in its creativity. God-tier. Talos I, such an amazing environment.

Unfortunately,
the game's pacing and overall enjoyments just nosedives from 100 to 0 once you're in the final stretch and the robots come after you and you have to backtrack through half of Talos I.

I thought it didn't live up to System Shock 2, but it's a good game.
To be honest there are things that Prey did better than even System Shock 2 could even dream about.
Environmental design, for a start.

Unfortunately,
the game's pacing and overall enjoyments just nosedives from 100 to 0 once you're in the final stretch and the robots come after you and you have to backtrack through half of Talos I.
Honestly it becomes almost complete non-issue with an upgraded stun gun, which makes these robots far less threatening and annoying to deal with.

It's certainly a very thoughtfully designed game. It always annoys me when immersive sims in crumbling societies just have people leaving audio logs around wherein they chronicle their gruesome ends, but when the whole game is predicated on the premise that the people don't know their society is on the verge of collapse, it all just makes sense. And it's not as though the premise of the game just exists as an answer to a problem in the genre, either. They really go whole hog with it, exploring even things like
the emotional anguish of a person in the early stages of Alzheimer's, which is only exacerbated by objects really moving around on their own and duplicating

Well, I don't.
And I'm not even relying on my sweet memories of it. I actually went to replay it recently, not long after completing Prey twice.

It's not has been long since I replayed System Shock 2 either. I think designing an entire ship with all the different places you would come to expect was incredible. By the end of the game you could go anywhere. It wasn't different levels like in most games, it was a single, continuous vessel. Pray tries something similar, but in the end Talos I still separate hubs connected by loading screens.

But level design is certainly not one of Prey shotcomings. What I think that hold Prey back is enemy design. In the beginning of the game I could never have though I would end up thinking that, but enemies just get.. boring. You have all this cool abilities and options but not really a demand to use them.

Love the intro and the novel take on the tutorial when you realize what they're actually testing you for.
