The Ramifications of the Smash Ultimate Leak Have Been Disgusting

Piracy is great in many cases and studies have shown it actually helps industry sales overall right? Because you got a few story spoilers for a fighting game, suddenly you're going full RIAA.

I'm always playing it fast and loose with my videogame forum browsing and I havn't seen shit for spoilers.

The leak wasnt a mom and pop store, it was a "reviewer" in a warez discord.

I think you're being a tad overdramatic mate.

Just don't look up spoilers.

Games leak all the time. Not sure why or how that needs to affect your enjoyment.

Obviously this sucks and people pirating the game are fucking awful, but Smash Ultimate is probably the game I'm least worried about spoilers for.

At least Sakurai realized this would happen and designed the reveal schedule accordingly. It's real shitty that so many people are playing pirated copies and revealing so much stuff, but that's life I guess. Pokemon next year will be brutal with this. Something about the Switch hacking community is horribly toxic in a way that the communities around previous Nintendo systems weren't

Heh, I wouldn't go that far but there needs to be a harsh reprecussion as a deterrent.

Nothing to spoil when every character has been shown, but I get a bit of what you say and even on here are some obvious people that pirated their copy. But it's not like they can play online so it could be worse. Now like this they just get a head start on some training and modes, but the meat of the game is in the online mode for me.

Is Switch piracy really that rampant? I googled the steps for homebrew and it hardly seemed like something a lot of people would do.

That will never happen. It's computationally impossible to do unless Nintendo's master key leaks.

This is why i dont get the allowance of hacking consoles to be discussed here.
No one is hacking their Switch for anything other than pirating games.
Same for any other modern console.

This kind of comes off like you're jealous they're playing the game before you (and not paying for it). But this is the case for pretty much every game out there.

Sounds like a lot of your problems would be alleviated by getting rid of street dates when a game is widely pirated.

This is what I'm trying to figure out too, like if it was story driven like say GoW or RDRII sure I can understand not wanting to leak certain story bits but Smash I dunno. Maybe folks who can datamine future dlc?

But this isnt the first game to be pirated and that review copy excuse isnt new either so im not seeing the big picture ramifications of this one leak in particular.

Is this a serious thread? How can you spoil yourself Smash without actually looking for it? It is not like the ending of FF13 (for example) where a key plot point was spoiled everywhere on the internet because the JP release was 4 months earlier.

How are you being spoiled?

Have you taken any steps to prevent it?

I think it's more unfortunate that emulation discussion here is gonna be even worse off than before

I mean that sometimes works but when a game/movie etc is popular you can just stumble upon a random comment somewhere on the Internet that spoils stuff. I remember this happened a lot with Star Wars movies.

I mean switch, ps4 and 3ds are broken if you want to break them. I remember thr ps2 chips, ps3 bootloaders, wii hacks, xbox mod chips, etc. I dunno about XboxOne but it would be like the first console not to be hacked since I have been gaming.

Mods are really popular, specially and ironically enough in the smash bros community.

You can make all the implications you want, but some people just want to play the "play as Zelda mod" of breath of the wild and similar things that are not piracy.

I have no idea what's the difference now from any famous game leaking. Really don't.

This was WAY worse in the 360 days. You could mod your 360 in 10 minutes and play every game weeks before launch.

Yeah, such words are an overreaction because of how it's come about. I avoided spoilers for RDR2 a fortnight after it was released. It wasn't exhausting or crippling to do so and should be no different with this.

nah, it won't, just like it didn't happen for pokémon until a couple of days before launch due to TPC being much more caring about their choices of reviewers

I think you have to be actively looking to find spoilers. I browse Era and r/SmashBros all the time and since the leak, the only spoilerish thing I've even seen was a potential 3rd party company name listed. Era always seems to blow leaks out of the water when they're fairly easy to avoid.

How can you spoil a game that isnt story based at all and the full roster has been known for a while? If it was something with a story focus I could understand but smash?

I had no clue about the leak, I have no clue about the story, all I know about the story is the Kirby trailer. Shit doesn't pop-up on the Internet, and there's a beautiful little thing called restrain.

This is the other part. All the major things (characters/stages/spirits/WoL) were revealed prior to this.

I'd love to live in a world where leaking the results of a fight between Princess Peach and Mega Man is the worst in the internet.

How do someone get spoiled with the soundtrack?
Don't you have to click in the video to listen to it? Just don't click on it.

I cant even begin to imagine being upset about having smash story or other features spoiled. But even with that said most of those spoilers are not going to be posted online outside of smash specific topics so it really shouldn't be an issue to avoid music spoilers, world of light, etc.

This is a non issue unless you're one of those people who continue to go into smash topics and then get upset about someone talking about the game in a manner you dont wish to engage with.

This is a big deal for Nintendo and certainly a big deal for Sakurai.

This shouldn't be a big deal for anyone else. I will play Smash Ultimate on December 7th and almost nothing will have been spoiled for me.

Yeah, this here. This is so run of the mill. The piracy is obviously bullshit and should be dealt with however Nintendo possibly can but there's nothing particularly horrific about the leaks happening here compared to most big games that wind up out in the wild early.

Plus, all that said, the idea of being this upset of Smash Bros. spoilers is just... weird.

I get that pirates ruin it for everyone else (they get it for free, play before anyone else, spoil the rest of the game), but sadly piracy has been a thing for a long time now. I honestly don't see what's different about Smash being leaked compared to other games.

It's also easy to just stay off message boards, social media and YouTube if you don't want to get spoiled. That being said, it is Smash and what else is there to spoil? I guess potential DLC or content that was cut but Nintendo has revealed damn near everything about the game before release anyway (roster, stages, modes, etc).

There will be legal ramifications to a select group over this for sure. They've made an attempt to hide but its honestly too little too late.

Oh well, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I don't doubt the majority do hack for piracy but there are some people genuinely interested in Homebrew so banning discussion entirely is dumb.

This shit is so lame.

I can't stand leak/data mining culture. Respect who made the fucking game and don't go snooping through their fucking files they don't want you to see.

This race to 15 mins of E fame by being the first to leak this, hear this, play this, etc.

Just wait for the fucking game to release like everybody else.
