GamesIndustry.biz said:
All of this means that the one big new release of the week, Battlefield V, had to settle for No.4. It's not a great start for EA's shooter, with launch sales down more than 63 per cent compared with 2016's Battlefield 1. Even with the expected rise in digital sales, it seems like the shooter is another AAA title to struggle in the current marketplace. However, it did perform better in its first week than titles such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Fallout 76.

Edit:

Since some people were asking, some other declines this year:

Call of Duty: Down 50% versus WW2, down 59% versus BLOPS3
Fallout 76: Down 82.4% from Fallout 4
Pokemon: Down 60% versus Sun/Moon, down 5% versus X/Y
Hitman 2: Down 90%
Soul Calibur 6: Down 55%
AC: Odyssey: Down 26%

And a game that went up:

Red Dead 2: Up 100% from RDR1, down 73% from GTA V

Edit 2:

Retail sales history:

I posted this in other thread, previous BF sales week 1 in UK.

From BrunoMB at old place:

[Week 43, 2011] BATTLEFIELD 3 (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 404,000 / NEW
[Week 44, 2013] BATTLEFIELD 4 (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 125,000 / NEW
[Week 12, 2015] BATTLEFIELD HARDLINE (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 115,000 / NEW
[Week 47, 2015] STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 335,000 / NEW
[Week 42, 2016] BATTLEFIELD 1 (ELECTRONIC ARTS) < 277,000 / NEW

Not too bad considering the awful marketing EA had for the game. I think the similar setting to BF1 probably turned some off too.

All in all it's a great game and I'm sure it'll have good legs.

The staggered release definitely made things confusing and it seemed to lose that new game launch day shine

I just felt like it was so weird with the pre-launch edition and when it was playable, and by who, for how much $$, and then they pulled the BR mode to later (which I think will give it a huge boost eventually) - Blackout being in COD stole some of that 'big map advantage' too.

PlayStation VR hardware also made it into the sales (available for around ÂŁ170) and this saw games like PlayStation VR Worlds (No.15) and Astro Bot Rescue Mission (No.19) increase in sales 204 and 242 per cent.

Having finished Astro bot yesterday, this makes me happy for Astro

And finally, Nintendo Switch regulars Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (No.10), Super Mario Party (No.24), Super Mario Odyssey (No.25) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (No.38) rose 98 per cent, 110 per cent, 110 per cent and 111 per cent.
It seems like Pokemon is driving Switch system sales.

Battlefield V will be fine. People know it'll appear regularly in sales events, and that it can be picked up at any point in the next 2 years without stumping up for the pass as well.

Didn't know it released last week.
Imagine digital attach rate will be up and sales will probably increase with the battle royal mode added later, but this year it's probably the weaker of the two yearly shooters

Another game compared to some previous installment doing much worse at retail. I really believe it's just more and more people are choosing digital (not 63% more of course but maybe 20-30?).

I hate to repeat myself in every thread but we are getting to the point where GfK data is pretty much irrelevant due to the lack of digital sales tracking.
There is no doubt that Battlefield V, even when accounting for a 100% digital share, sold less than BF1. But without the full picture it's hard to know exactly how well it did and whether the comps in the OP would be accurate if digital is factored in for all titles.

Glad to see people are finally showing DICE and EA that we're fed up with their shit.
For comparisons so far this year:

Call of Duty: Down 50% versus WW2, down 59% versus BLOPS3
Fallout 76: Down 82.4% from Fallout 4
Pokemon: Down 60% versus Sun/Moon, down 5% versus X/Y
Hitman 2: Down 90%
Soul Calibur 6: Down 55%
AC: Odyssey: Down 26%
Red Dead 2: Up 100% from RDR1, down 73% from GTA V

It's a bit steeper than the competition, but relatively in line with the UK retail implosion.

The blowback from last years Battlefront 2 mess was going to hit them so I'm sure EA didn't forecast V to perform really well.

They really need to do better next year. They just keep fucking up and always find themselves in the middle of bad pr.

Battlefield V's staggered launch approach was so focused on stimulating digital, that I'm not sure if retail only numbers are very relevant here.

That's really bad for a multiplayer focused FPS. The gap between V and Black Ops 4 will be huge.

Honestly I think the biggest reason is Fortnite and other BR shooters. I picked up BF5 and I'm loving it but it almost feels old school at this point, and while that's not a bad thing to me I can see a lot of people passing on it, especially when one of the leading alternatives is f2p. Also, BF1 was a letdown after BF4.

It sold better on the Xbox One,
see people? The Bundles doing their work
I'm saying this because a lot of people said that COD BOPS4 and RDR2 selling better on PS4 was a bad signal for the Xone and that is a lie, of course.

I'm sure it'll have good legs down the line. I'm the camp of waiting for a sale and picking it up, and I'd guess others are too.

The next Battlefield really needs more dev time. 3-4 years is a must at this point. BFV really shows that 2 years isnt enough anymore for DICE to handle.

Thats only for PC and Xbox tho. But yeah with the Deluxe also the push was hard to digital.
I mean for me and my "platoon" of arround 15 people who always play BF together. Digital (on Xbox) is a no brainer.
You get a month of EA Access. You can play the 10 trial and then with EA Access you get that 10% discount on a digital copy. So even with getting EA Access for a month you are saving money at the end and you can play earlier. Win win.

UK retail only numbers are down all the time I thought?

Anyway yeah bad marketing, an unfinished game at launch, incel idiots, their idiotic release schedule and so so reviews. Not surprised. First DICE BF game I havent bought at launch since bfbc1

There is something called game title fatigue. It seems these publishers will try their best to milk these titles, and then complain when people are fed up with them.

Even though I totally love it I'm not surprised.

The game is not finished. And frankly I'm happy sales are down. Might give them the incentive to wait.

The only game that sells in retail in UK these days is FIFA, everything else will be down in comparison to last release. And I bet when it comes to digital purchases FIFA would be on the lower end of digital sales here in this country.

I've moved to digital purchases and services like Origin Access etc. And even when it comes to digital purchases it's always from foreign stores. Like all my PS4 purchases are from US PSN store and PC purchases from various third party resellers.

I rarely if ever buy a game from a UK retailer, the only times I do is when I can get a physical copy of a PS4 game cheap & with some special bonus. Then I'll buy it via simplygames as they ship out copies before launch. Last time I did this was for Detroit as I got it for ÂŁ38 and got a free copy of Bladerunner 2049 with it.

I actually expect FIFA to have a high digital share.
It's a game folks play all year round, so the digital convenience here is a pretty big deal.

Well almost everyone I know who owns a console has FIFA and they have a physical copy, they are always surprised when I tell them I don't own any FIFA game.

I'm having an absolute blast with BFV. I liked BF1 a lot but enjoying BFV a lot more for whatever reason. It looks and feels fantastic.

Better then AC? Thought that did great?

AC is not what it used to be, despite selling quite well it's still far off from touching the big juggernauts, and sales have been declining as well, even Far Cry has far surpassed Assassin's creed in sales, Ubisoft milking the franchise to death has damaged the franchise severly

The UK charts are just an interesting metric demonstrating the rise of digital sales. Plus all the incentives were for getting it digital. EA Access and all that.

Isn't Odyssey the best selling AC game of this gen? After the disaster that was Unity and the mild numbers of Syndicate then Origins came and re-ignited interest in the franchise.

Another thing is that FC5 introduced co-op so you have a brand new audience that will get into it much more than the single-player only experience.

Probably much more digital because that's the main way people got in early via EA access etc.
