I don't know why car companies keep pouring money on internal combustion cars. Everyone should be moving to electric. That's one of the reasons these companies are starting to lose market share and closing factories.

Sorry about that, OP. This isn't just a Canada thing btw. 15% of salaried workers are being cut.

The closures by 2019 include:

Oshawa Assembly in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly in Detroit.
Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio.
Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland.
Warren Transmission Operations in Warren, Michigan.
+ two other additional plants outside North America.

Im not too familiar with Ontario's working demographic.

Are those working in the auto manufacturing industry older? I imagine not many young ppl have gone into it as a career over the last decade

The Chrysler plant in Windsor, Ontario hired thousands of people in the past 3 years to replace their early 80s hires. Most of the new employees are young (20s / 30s). Wages for new hires are a lot lower then they were previously, but there aren't that many jobs where to can immediately do 50k/yr with some overtime, and be looking at 75-80k by the end of your first decade.

If you didn't/couldn't get an in demand university degree, auto work is close to a best bet in several communities.

Yeah we didn't find out about that until this morning. The news broke initially about our plant first.

Update (Nov. 26, 2018 10:50 A.M. ET): It is official. A GM spokesperson told Jalopnik over the phone: "We are ending production of the Volt March 1, 2019." When asked whether the Volt will return at some point, the representative said she could not comment on future products.

Ford's killing it

Open for business, right?

This is gonna be devastating for Oshawa and that entire region.

Not going to defend that asshole, but realistically this is purely a business decision from GM. Doubt there could have been much done to save the plant. Terrible for the car industry in Canada and for all the people who are losing jobs :/
