It makes sense to me why men think men are funnier; it's much easier to relate with other men and they tend to share my sense of humor much more often, probably due to the fact that they're around other guys most of the time.

Women finding men funnier is surprising though. My first guess would be that they find mens humor very crass and crude and downright unpleasant a lot of the time. But I have heard from a ton of women that humor is definately something they look for in a guy so maybe that is why they associate being funny with men.

I know some very funny women. My sister, my sister in law, my girlfriends. Very funny.
And more dark and twisted than most guys i know.

In general i think it's true most men don't think most women are funny.
But a lot of men don't make ANY effort to relate to women.

Very important in my relationships. Key.

From what I have read in the op, that doesn't seem to be the case. It's not that men don't like funny women it's that men perceive women as less funny than men and prefer that women laugh at their jokes rather than make their own. Seems more nuanced than "men don't like funny women."
That's still pretty fucking lame. "Laugh at my joke, don't make your own" seems close to the "silent unless spoken to" mentality.

IMO the reason is the society and roles in relationships between men and women throughout history. Men more likely needed to be witty and funny to woo women, while women not so much, to put it simply.

Might be a long time until it evens out, but even then, it's a question of how much of it is societal and how much biological, seeing as men are biologically more inclined to pursue and be the king of the hill as opposed to women.

My last two girlfriends were two of the funniest people I've met. Any guy who thinks women aren't funny just has hang ups.

Beyond lame. I mean, i will not lie: it's a welcome ego-boost when a woman laughs at my jokes. Not sure why, but it has that effect on me. But don't hold back when a woman makes a great joke. Jesus, silly fucks. At least giver her the ego-boost for a second as well.
The insecurity of some men and the horrible way it manifests itself is a worldwide horrific problem..

I still remember there was a thread back on GAF years ago where we were talking about female comedians. And it was page after page of "left-leaning liberals" just saying outright that women aren't funny.

It was fucking disgusting having to read through that bullshit and even worse seeing everyone else pat each other on the back as if it was something completely OK to believe.

I mean, when you turn it around it would be "I want to be entertained while not being entertaining myself". That doesn't sound like a great mind set either. I don't think you should take those results as a hard binary

I don't buy that men don't like funny women.

Unless the author decided which women are funny and is complaining that men do not find those particular women funny.

Women have so thoroughly internalized the idea that women aren't funny that they stopped trying to be. Just another cultural possibility space young girls are told they're not welcome in.

Consider how for a subset of men, the ideal woman is subservient and largely silent. Not much room for humorous women with that worldview.

Yeah its more grey than the binary results would have to believe. I would love to be around a funny women but its not a priority for me to find one and the Girl I love has a terrible sense for jokes but I love her regardless. Her friends have in-jokes for each other but they are better story tellers than joke tellers. They have a sense of humor but it just comes out more like a story than with the punchiness of a joke.

I've met women who are very funny, usually they are very quick and witty with the replies also they come out of left field. I like funny women because I'm not a funny person. So when she is funny it's easier to talk

In fact I think lots of men like funny women,my mother is funny as fuck, definitely better with the jokes than my father.
One of my co-workers was also fucking hilarious, she was crazy though.

Lol at the click bait title. It isn't that men don't like funny women, it should say 'men like women that found them funny'.

It's an interesting article, although it also it's stereotypical in where it seems a bunch of social scientists have wasted time and effort in knowing like most society knew already: men try to be liked by women, one of the ways they do it is with humor, and both men and women has been 'trained' by this social concept in their preferences (men prefer telling jokes, women prefer being told jokes).

I never suggested it would be a good mindset?

I said that the idea of someone preferring a woman to listen and laugh at their jokes instead of making their own is pretty fucking lame, which it is.

I literally never said that the opposite extreme would be better or that it's binary. Obviously a situation where both parties feel comfortable in making and appreciating jokes equally is more healthy.

That 1st post proves men are funnier... jesus christ. Also I'm gonna go ahead and say men are funnier BECAUSE women just put themselves out there less. Self inflicted nonmedy. The funny = smart correlation is stupid though. People who are dumb as bricks are much funnier, wit sucks. Fuck being clever. I think the men not liking funny chicks thing is completely ego based. If a women is funnier then you that's one less thing you can bring to the table is what I imagine the logic is. Which is valid I suppose, a lot of guys get girls way out of their league because they are funny so if they don't have that they probably just give up and assume there is no chance.

I think the article touches on the matter that men have no shame in throwing out jokes at every opportunity while women seem to be more shy about it.

I'm sure there is some sexism involved but unless you are some all time great comedian like George Carlin or something than what people find funny varies enormously based on their own personal experiences.

There's an exorbitant amount of macho guys where I live. They think women are meant to cook and clean and be pretty while men are meant to be the funny and clever and outdoorsy ones. I know plenty of guys in my area that scoff when they even see woman comedian before ever hearing a single word she says. It's crazy how much people around me want things to go back to the 50s in the worst possible ways

Uh, can anyone confirm from this post alone that this user HATES women?

On topic, i didnt realize folk hate female comedians. I think there are generally fewer good female comedians though. One of my all times favourites is Shappi Korsandhi (spelling?) however she's not very big and haven't actually heard her do much since she was on Michael McIntyre's comedy road show.

Yo, I hate these results. As a guy who's number one trait I look for in women is humor, this is depressing. The world is literally against me ):

this really is so true. men have no idea the beat-down young girls go through. it's insidious.

growing up, i was chatised, all the time, for being too much of a know-it-all, too obnoxious, too outspoken, too bossy, too assertive, too 'un-ladylike'. meanwhile, my male classmates got to do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. i saw my fellow girls, all bright, funny, creative go-getters, cut themselves down to be more 'sweet'.

if there's one thing i'll ever thank my mother for, it's her telling me not to give in to that shit.

Also I️ hope society gets to the point when we can discuss female comedians without providing a list

Some extraordinarily defensive dudes disputing/minimizing the data with personal anecdotes ITT.
It's kinda funny how many people are falling over themselves to say how they know some funny women. It's basically #notallmen or saying you have black friends in a thread about the widespread racism in america. Like... okay?

Just another consequence of patriarchy. The funnier person becomes the center of attention in a group, and obviously men don't want that person to be a woman.

It's become pretty obvious to me that women suppress their funnier side until they're fully comfortable around you, whereas men are happy to flex that funny muscle right off the bat, and to anyone. Even my girlfriend - she's amazingly funny, but I didn't know that until we were already dating. She only started cracking jokes and one-liners all the time after she started to trust me more.

I don't buy that men don't like funny women.

Unless the author decided which women are funny and is complaining that men do not find those particular women funny.
Just look at the amount of vitriol female comedians get compared to male ones, and how each and every female comedian is painted as a representative of all female comedians (even in this thread), which is something that never happens to male ones. Or to the fact that the general construct of the "ideal wife" was that of a subservient one for ages, and probably still is for a lot of men.

SOLUTIONS FOR WOMEN TO BE MORE FUNNY LIKE THE MEN FOLK:

- Everytime you are gross or weird, backpedal and just be like ITS JUST A JOKE BRO WHERES YOUR SENSE OF HUMOUR? I ONLY LIKE MEN WHO CAN TAKE A JOKE

- Carry a sword with you at all times and seem slightly unhinged, that way when you crack an obvious joke or sick geek reference, people will laugh, albeit nervously. Be too dense to notice it might be a self preservation instinct. You're incredible.

- Do mean and confusing things to strangers, film it, and show it to people who don't know or like them so that they might find it funny. If you don't understand, try to imagine you have been raised your whole life thinking you are special and that your blood is special and that relating with normal folk might make your genitals fall off??

- Say your jokes in a really deep voice so men don't just tune you out and then think they came up with the joke themselves a few minutes later and say it back to you.

- Don't let men kill you or set you on fire for not having sex with them. you can't be funny when you are dead!

- Try not to offend men or broadly accuse them of sexism, they'll fail to the funny side and ah- whoops

See:

Men not liking women who know more about cars then they do(only Marisa Tomei can get away with that or women who make more money than they do etc.
