I'm actually really enjoying this. A genuinely interesting villain for the first time this series.

I enjoyed that. Fun, campy historical. Might have been a good Episode 3, with Rosa saved for the mid-series 'proper' episodes.

Liked that, thought King James overacting was a bit much at first, but he got better as it went on. Far more consistent theme than last week and getting better at giving everyone a role.

Morax king CG was a bit silly.

Good episode, should've been earlier in the series, and a two-parter.
Slowly getting back to feeling like Doctor Who finally after last week's episode, and this weeks. Shame there are only two episodes left.

Resolution was a bit rushed once the Morax(?) revealed themselves, but I really enjoyed that episode.

The Tarantino joke at the end got the biggest laugh of the whole season from me.

Decent episode, good guest stars and the witch make up did look cool, a bit cliched with the villains and the head huntress secretly being a witch. I would say overall S11 is one of the worst of the rebooted series, but still decent.

I'm sorry but I absolutely loved that. The mud zombies were nice and eerie and Alan Cumming as King James was an absolutely hilarious performance, that made for the most fun I've had so far this season.

To be fair, the 11th Doctor didn't remember the Great Intelligence. Could be that it's hard for the Doctor to keep track of every enemy he/she has faced, considering she is now over 1200 years old.
The beginning of this episode also had the doctor intending for them to see Elizabeth I's coronation. She could have teased her companions with the story of their wedding. It's not a big deal but a missed opportunity and would have been funny.

Yep, I agree. I love little nods like that. That's something RTD and Moffat would've done.

Unless it's a fez or something equally obvious, the writers awareness of the Doctor's past adventures is nonexistent.

Outside of the fez (which is more of a reference to the 11th doctor, rather than a specific episode or adventure), I think the only reference to a previous episode has been Kerblam!'s callback to The Unicorn And The Wasp (when the Doctor says something along the lines of "speaking of giant wasps, let me tell you about when I met Agatha Christie"). I do quite miss those references, hopefully they'll start reincorporating them next season.

All this moral hypocrisy from 13 makes me actually wonder if they're somehow going to be making a point about it, the writers can't actually be this daft can they?

It's like we can count on something weird every happen now.

Apparently Chibnall wanted Capaldi to stay on for Series 11, I'm so happy that didn't happen, for Capaldi's sake.

Huge missed opportunity for a callback to The Satan Pit...

...but besides that, I found that episode to be a lot of fun. This and Kerblam! have got the show back to feeling like Who again.

Errrrr, so now there is a non-zero possibility that the series finale will be cancelled to make way for a televised debate between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn about Brexit.

(Before anyone panics, the Doctor Who slot is probably too early.)

Another enjoyable episode, and so far for me it's still every episode with different writers > every solo Chibnall episode.

That King James portrayal was hilarious, lol.

Quite liked this. Two good ones in a row!

I agree with you about 13's moral hypocrisy and I feel like even if unintentional a reactive reckoning is coming, but - what's the source on this? I've literally never seen this said anywhere, fwiw (and I soak up a lot of silly Doctor Who BS). Like, we know Tennant was offered quite a lot in monetary terms to stay on for Series 5 and we even know how the series arc would've played out with him, but given the BBC had tried to give Capaldi the shove a couple of times & briefed to press against him in an attempt to move the show on I find this really difficult to believe (despite loving him in the role myself)

I swear I read that Chibnall was happy for Capaldi to stay on but I just assumed he was being polite after he had already decided to leave.

This makes more sense, I think. Capaldi said in some late-game interviews before Christmas that he hadn't even spoken to Chibnall, compared to Tennant who Moffat separately reached out to despite his decision to leave saying "are you sure?" - and that's what I mean. Like, it's polite, but it's no secret the BBC were never really happy with an older white dude as the Doctor again - none of the wins from diversity, none of the wins from being a sexy young man.

I was surprised too, but the source is Steven Moffat.

"Chris tried to persuade him to stay [on for Series 11 in 2018]."

He adds: "I knew it was a possibility that he'd leave because Doctors tend to do three years. I thought that he might want to opt out, rather than go through the trauma of a change in command and maybe leaving a year later anyway. But I think he came close to staying."

And Series 5 with the Pandorica would have beeen a hell of an exit for Tennant. I think Amy was definitely a better fit for Matt Smith though, and the Peter Pan vibe of Eleven.

Huh, that's very interesting, especially since Capaldi said he hadn't spoken to Chibnall around the end of Series 12. It's irrelevant anyway though, I guess... we all know they wanted a clean break. I think it's been good, though I also think this series has suffered (versus S5) by not having some sort of continuity thread. River, for all her faults, did wonders.

Today's episode is probably my favorite one this season.

Also, Alan Cumming's King James was fantastically over the top when needed, and surprisingly on point at times. I hope this isn't the last we've seen of him.

I think there were several great performances in that episode. The supporting cast was first class.

I'm quite fond of the Series 10 episode The Eaters of Light, and this episode has quite a similar premise though the resolution is neater. The team building continues, perhaps as much in the main cast themselves as in the TARDIS crew they play.

I'm glad Capaldi left, tbh. He's easily my favorite Doctor, and I'm not sure if I'd want to see him in Chibnall's more grounded, passive Doctor Who tone.

I've just seen what might be my favourite TARDIS interior design yet. Doctor Who Magazine did a feature this month on the various interiors over the years, and in the corner of one page they put this little beauty by long-time Who alum Peter McKinstry:

http:///z3Zc.jpg

There's touches of Smith's second console room in some of the colouring and lighting, and a lot of influence from McGann's too, especially in the flying buttresses. I absolutely love the cathedral-like ceiling, and the roundels are even still present towards the back.

My favorite one is the 7th in the movie .... that mix of cozy librarian house with the sci fi controls give the perfect fantasy but sci fi that I like so much about doctor who

I've always loved that one too. I was eight when the movie came out, so for me that TARDIS interior felt magical.

I think the Peter McKinstry design I posted finds a nice middle-ground between the cathedral-like Movie interior and Smith/Capaldi's more sci-fi interior.

I liked this episode mostly for Alan Cummings and it feeling like a Dr. Who episode. The ending did seem a little sloppy, but it wasn't the out of nowhere shit like the Amazon Kerblam! episode.

Am I to assume King James had a thing for Ryan?

I think so. I was hoping that Ryan would say 'fuck it, I'll go with you to London' at the end, lol.

How on earth did the person in the opening witch trial drown so fast?

And Yaz is a police officer but doesn't seem to know CPR?

Edit: Yaz equating some school bullying with constant fear of being killed is pretty bizarre

I have to say that while I love the whole cast and I've liked or loved every episode-I'm bummed that the season is drawing to a close and this season hasn't felt epic at all to me. I get the intention but I'd like some mystery, or some urgency or some twist. Otherwise it's just kind of ... flat. All great episodes but nothing to keep me thinking about between episodes.

I honestly love Jodie. Just like every one before her-she seems like she was born for this role and owns it entirely. I just watched Kerblam tonight and I love how happy she was to talk about Agatha Christie and the Wasp.

It's weird to think that if there's only six episodes next year we may be already half way through Jodie's entire run

James had several male favourites and was known to be quite physically affectionate. He is played by Alan Cumming who is openly bisexual, so it's there in the subtext.

I was thinking that maybe the actor was bi or gay, and that he was just took some liberties with his part, but I had no idea about King James himself. Brilliantly acted.
