Can you play/switch to the original arcade game/gfx?

What extras are there besides the main game, online leaderboards? Concept art?
Not that I've discovered. The menu you see in the opening is literally the only options I've seen so far. If I press pause during game the options are just 'Quit' and 'Resume'. I may be missing something, but I think I've hit all the buttons during gameplay and haven't discovered any way to switch from HD to original.

Unholy Heights is totally worth the deep discount it's got at the moment by the way (It's less than £2.00!) Really fun tower defense/Tower Management game. It's not going to win any awards in the graphics department, but micro-managing each of your monster tenant's individual needs, figuring out what combination of monsters on each floor is effective, balancing how much rent each tenant can afford, and making sure your tenants are in top form when heroes and violent mobs come visit the apartment complex is a blast!

So I just started Undertale...

I am not feeling or understanding this game. I'm about 90 minutes into the game, I just finished the opening snow area and the first "boss" (the brother character). The story/dialog is just, nonsense (?). Like I feel like there's supposed to be something "deep" going on here, because I know this game's story is highly regarded as the best thing of the game, but all of the conversation and NPC dialog just reads like poorly translated English, I mean, I guess it's supposed to be funny, but it just reads as just... odd and not funny and rambling incoherence at times. I get this is supposed to be emulating the weirdness of Earthbound, but I'm not finding it endearing, it's just weird. I don't know, am I taking this too seriously? Does this game get tremendously more interesting later, I'm still early in the game.

I find the combat really engaging for the first 30 minutes, but I'm already finding the bullet-hell avoidance mechanic a little stale. I dunno, it's more engaging than a typical JRPG turn based system, I'm a vet of the genre, and it's definitely the most interesting part of the game for me. I'm enjoying the music, but the visual aesthetic of MS-DOS style graphics are very bleh.

I'll probably give the game another hour, I stopped right after another "puzzle" (which are already getting boring). I don't know why I'm not enjoying this more, plenty of JRPGs have environmental puzzles and cryptic stories, but this game just isn't engaging me... hopefully it's just yet and I lean into this and come to enjoy it. I want to be with others who view this as a classic.

Serious question: are there any good Animal Crossing-like games on the Switch aside from Stardew Valley? I want a good town sim game of sorts but Stardew Valley didn't click with me.

adam prime I'm with you on Undertale. I've started it twice and got to roughly where you are both times. Not feeling it at all. I want to know why everyone is rating it so highly but I'm finding the encounters and puzzles boring.

Oh cool you still get a discount on Valkyrie Chronicles 1 if you buy VC4 on discount digitally. I assume it's a perfectly fine port?

If it's the puzzles at the start, the whole point is that the puzzles should be bad, but the maker of the puzzles thinks differently?

Since you don't mention how you play/approach Undertale, it's difficult to know what kind of story you are experiencing. Even the music your hear on your playthrough is dependent on how you play it. But since you describe bullet-hell avoidance this early in the game, I guess you have fought and killed a few of your encounters?

Your actions will affect your whole playthrough, even in the small details. The game will make a lot of sense at the end, regardless of how you play it. It will make even more sense on a second playthrough, when you approach it differently. However, I don't know why you find the dialog nonsense, since IMO each character and its writing is very well defined within the world.

Still have a number of titles in my Switch backlog (eg. Phantasy Star, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4), so I only bought Steamworld Dig 1 during the sale. Heard lots of good things regarding the series, so I will probably play this first and advance in chronological order (1 -> Heist -> 2).

Just a heads-up: Dig 1 > Dig 2 > Heist is the canonical order, if story matters to you. The great gameplay and art style are obviously the focus in these games but I was surprised to see there's actual lore in them, even if it's nothing too deep. /pun

That said, I went through them in release order earlier this year though, so yeah. Either way works. lol

Never got around to playing Heist's DLC or really looking into it much, and I just realized who it adds to the game. Interesting...

I eventually want to repurchase all of the SteamWorld games on Switch (after playing them all on 3DS) and go through them again in the lead-up to the next installment in the series. I'm now looking forward to see what that Outsider DLC's all about...

I am super curious about what Image and Form are doing next, especially since they have merged with another studio and have said their next game is gonna take a while. Dig 2 was a huge step up for them, and Heist was already very good.

Thanks for the heads-up! I will probably play them in 1 -> 2 -> Heist then. Meanwhile, I also read plenty of posts gushing 2 and Heist. It is so tempting to pick them up too.

I don't recall them fully merging as a development team; I thought they were just organizationally under the same publishing umbrella now as their compatriots in Sweden who developed Fe. Separate studio branding (with some crossover in development assistance, of course, which was kind of going on already), one independent publisher (so Zoink doesn't have to shop their next game to EA, as I understand it).

But yes, I'm just as curious. Dig 2 was a whole other level of execution beyond Dig 1—they weren't kidding when they envisioned it as the jump from Metroid to Super—and Heist was honestly a crisper take on a fast-paced, rapid flanking variant of squad-based cover tactics than Mario + Rabbids. And while I'm open to anything they throw at us (there are few developers in the industry that inspire more of my confidence in committing to picking up their next game sight unseen), it would be interesting to see Image & Form return to where they started on the DS and deliver an incredible new TD game with their present development experience and resources, because that's one genre that still has ample room for a good studio to come in and show everybody else how it's done. TDs were all over Flash and mobile and yet the commercial end of the genre hasn't approximated more than a fraction of what was already being done with it in the heyday of Warcraft III, and only a few titles have genuinely driven it to new places. But I&F is one of the first studios I would trust to do exactly that.

I played Undertale without fighting.

Correction - I tried, but already 20 minutes in (or less) I was getting my ass kicked again and again (and again) at the same place so badly that I quit the game, since I didn't find these "fights" enjoyable anyway. I mean, if it this tough in the beginning, later it will probably be worse. Was it tough because it was my first playthrough, or should it be (easily) possible to play without fighting already on the first playthrough?

Early but I'm really liking Star Link. Just wish I could figure out how to make the flamethrower useful. Game is really interesting and tight otherwise. Feels like Starfox evolved ATM.

The Messenger is fucking great. Like legit af aside from some upgrade pacing. I'm actually very ready for the 'shift' to occur. The level design and bosses has been getting pretty tough. They've been uniformly great but I need a little more relaxation soon. Game creates urgency in me.

9/10 and I'm about halfway in waiting for the part I'll probably like more.

Thank you! I'll save my money and put it towards an actual tales game haha

If you didn't know, Tales of Vesperia comes to Switch in January, and it's widely regarded as one of the best in the series.

Serious question: are there any good Animal Crossing-like games on the Switch aside from Stardew Valley? I want a good town sim game of sorts but Stardew Valley didn't click with me.

Have a look at Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles. It's not much of a sim, but there are a lot of similarities with games like SC and SC. One of the most chilled and laid back games I've played.

Still debating if I'm going to get Doom . I probably should since it only has been on sale once or twice before. Just upgraded to a 200 gb card from 64 gb, as I was having to archive so many big games(Fire Emblem Warriors)

Doom is fantastic. I bought it physical last year and the cart has lived inside my Switch for most of the year as I buy almost always digital. I haven't finished it yet but I'm right near the end.

Guys, any thoughts on Shining Resonance Refrain or Wonder Boy?

Shining Resonance is like an even cheaper Tales of game. If you're into those games, I'd wait for a steeper sale. I've been playing for three or four hours, and there's no real customization, the story is kind of boring, and the combat is brainless until boss fights.

I'll add my impressions, since I don't see much feedback about Shining Resonance Refrain in the eshop threads.

Ds2HPw-U0AEilj5.jpg:large

I'm in a Sega mood, so I bought the game yesterday. I played through Chapter 1 (which is basically the demo), then walked around the city, went to the field, killed some monsters and defeated the first boss.

Yes, it is a lot like a Tales of game, and whether that's good or bad depends on your tastes. I get the impression that the plot is average (which I already expected), but if you're into "1000 years ago, the dragons were killed by a god-like creature" plots, it looks entertaining enough, like an average (but still enjoyable) adventure movie you watch on TV.

The characters don't look deep by any means, but they're fine and I find the silly dialogue enjoyable. It's a nice change of pace after the 200 hours I put into Xenoblade 2. Also, the ladies are pretty to look at and you have a variety of bikinis to choose from :P

People usually complain about the graphics, but they're colorful and good enough for me (it is a PS3 remaster of a budget JRPG after all). It's mostly 30 FPS, though the "visual novel" segments (cheap cutscenes using in-game graphics to advance the plot) are 60 FPS. You can play with Japanese voices and they're excellent.

The soundtrack is also pretty good... not amazing, but pretty good. In case you ever buy the game, I suggest you raise the BGM volume in the mixer, because the sound effects and voices are way louder and you might not notice how good the music is.

Just like dlauv, I haven't played much, so I'll come back with more impressions later, but while I think he is mostly right, it seems to me that there will be some customization later in the game. The characters learn special abilities that you can equip and there is a bonds system that you can mess with to get different combat buffs or something like that.

Well, I'll definitely wait for a sale then, $30 for this package ain't worth it to me.
I mean I'd prefer a $8 straight up ACA release.

Question about Steamworld Dig 2, which I just started playing (after finishing The Infectious Madness of Dr Dekker, which I enjoyed and recommend - good acting, full of small surprises).

Y+B to run and jump is not working so well for me (too many misses), did anyone remap these and if so to what?

so I got DKTF while it was on sale finally and am playing it for the first time

half way through world 4 already and going back to get all the letters I missed, I'm pretty blown away honestly. The soundtrack is great and is integratted into each level beautifully, platforming is a good challenge, a lot of collectibles with cool secret paths to entire levels, set piece moments I wasn't expecting, overall surprised by how pretty it is idk

just super impressed. One of the most impressive games I've played this year easily and that has been in a very impressive year. Maybe a bit too early to say it Celeste and Donkey kong among everything have managed to probably be my two games of 2018

been a good year for me, even better then 2017 personally. Looking forward to 2019

Speaking of Undertale, I'd avoid trying to think too hard about dialogue and stuff while playing it. The game is highly regarded for its writing but it's not because it's particularly deep, it just has an outstanding cast and is a very well told story.

In general the less you know the better too.

Oh yeah, Towerfall is also on sale. I'm contemplating on getting that, but it's local multiplayer focused and I don't know anyone near me who's interested in playing it. Is the co-op (can have 1 player) and trials mode good enough for single player content?

Deru: The Art of Cooperation is a really nice co-op game.

It's premise is really simple: one player is a white shape that can block black streams and the other is a black character that can block white streams and if they touch the other colour they are destroyed. Bigger shapes move slower, but block more.

It's easy to pick up and play with basically anybody, which is great for co-op games. For the first world, nothing but the control stick is required to finish levels. In the second world a button is added to transfer size to the other character.

IMO, the campaigns is worth it for single player alone. There is a lot of content to unlock, and a good challenge. The single player is pretty even with playing coop difficulty-wise, since coop has friendly fire which can create a mess of its own.

Interesting to know that about Towerfall. I loved Celeste so much that I had my eye on their other games. I don't play co op so I was put off it but if it's worth it in single player I might need to reconsider.

• Numerous densely detailed locations filled with fine-tuned action and puzzles
• 20+ gear-grinding, screen-filling boss battles stand in your way

Bought Enter the Gungeon on Switch today even though I already have it on PC. I'm also thinking about getting KAMIKO and SteamWorld Dig 2. Yay or nay? I know they are good games, I'm just not sure about them. I'm mostly looking casual experience. Are they 'easier' than Hollow Knight?

I should really stop buying new Switch games and finish those I own, notably, BotW...

Here's some Switch footage of Toki -- it is the first three stages & their boss battles.

Really cant wait to get my hands on this. I loved the Amiga port back in the day!

So, Wild Guns Reloaded is really good.

Really hard. Like, really REALLY hard but damn good.

Yeah. Its a fantastic game but doesn't hold back with the difficulty. I managed a no continue run on hard mode but that took weeks worth of practice to nail. Cant wait for Ninja Warriors to get released on the Switch :)

Right, I need your help Era.

I've previously changed the region on my Switch to the U.S to import a few titles when they've been on sale. I've just done the same again to download Puyo Puyo - Tetris and it's not letting me, instead saying that my credit card is not issue to the U.S (it's a U.K card) and therefore I can't make the purchase.

I've never received this message before. Has anyone else? None of my U.K cards are working anymore.

I did the same. You'te not supposed to do this on your first playthrough apparently. One of the boss fights is completely skipped on your second playthrough (unless you killed absolutely everything and everyone in playthrough 1) and that's the one I got completely stuck at when trying to run the game as a pacifist right away.

Guess I'll never finish this game to see what the fuzz was about.

Questions...

So i picked up kirby.. Are the levels always this short? Starting to regret my purchase.

The main levels are trivial, especially if you play couch co-op with anyone above the age of 12, or use the Star Allies from those shrines.
The endgame after you finish has a lot more challenge, like boss rush and completing all collections. It's a bit like Yoshi games, levels are easy to finish but hard to 100%.

Yeah, even though I'm getting my ass kicked I'm still having a blast. Plus I learned how to roll and lasso on my last playthrough, so improvement!

Also, I was kind of interested in Ninja Warriors before but it's now a day one because of how good this remake is.
