brazil, unfortunately
Today, we are observing early signs of the shortage slowly creeping into Japan. At the time of writing, regular Neon Blue/Neon Red and Gray Nintendo Switch sets have ran out online at medium/large size retailers Tsutaya, Yamada Denki, and Nojima Online.

Considering their lofty goal this shouldn't be happening.

It's not like Switch is selling that well in Japan.

Pretty sure Nintendo has plenty of systems on hand. Certain retailers won't order enough though.

There was a 4 M difference between shipped and sold through numbers at the end of Q2 so yeah this should not be happening. Maybe they did underestimate Japan demand? Seems odd.

My sister is trying to find the Mario Kart Switch bundle here in the US and it's sold out everywhere.

"Although stock appears to be still plenty on Amazon Japan and Yodobashi Camera"

So that's not a shortage.

It's the beginning of the holiday shopping season in Japan. Some retailers are gonna run out of a lot of things. Some retailers selling out during the weekend (shipments tend to be on Monday) isn't that unusual even out of the holiday season. Shipments are on Monday.

Pokémon and Smash will cause a serious meltdown for Smash shortages. And I love it!

Hmm the stores probably didn't order enough. I would find it odd that there would be a shortage. Unless Nintendo really didn't anticipate such a demand? Which would be odd considering their forecast of 20m units sold.
Also not surprised you can find some on Amazon. Online shopping isn't as big in Japan as it is in the US.

This doesn't read like a shortage. A few specific models missing from a store or two is normal.

They have a lot of Switch shipped already and the systemm didn't even sell that well over the year for it to not be available.

Didn't Nintendo categorically say it had enough stock to prevent this from happening?

Yeah and they probably do, it's just not allocated well. I'm guessing in December you'll start seeing way more stock and right now the retailers just underestimated LG's legs.

Considering their lofty goal this shouldn't be happening.

It's not like Switch is selling that well in Japan.

Maybe it is this week. Pokemon LG has excellent WoM and is in the right place to have very good and surprising legs. Two big hardware weeks back to back before December might not have been anticipated

It's absurdly stupid to have shortage when you have a very challenging target to achieve. It's not the first time Nintendo is having shortage issue. I won't give them a pass.
Look at the actual facts rather than the headline before you decide to bring the hammer down. If Amazon ran out of stock for any of the 3 consoles (and they do often) it's not a shortage. It means Amazon ran out and they didn't get their next shipment yet. This happens all the time...someone just decided to make a story out of nothing.

Nintendo needs you to give them a pass here. Please reconsider

If it's a story out of nothing, I would of course reconsider. But we've seen Nintendo struggle to meet demand so often in the past, so I'll remain cautious.

Retailers themselves probably didn't order enough stock.

Always funny to see the same people try to take shots at Nintendo though

Thats a good sign that Nintendo has a real shot at hitting their targets. Switch is really gaining momentum and is going to have a huge december if everything pans out. Shipments selling out means that their november is stronger than everybody thought.

IMO this is just a couple of retailers underestimating the demand for hardware at the launch of Pokémon, and are now currently low on stock. I don't think this spells any doom (where doom means widespread shortages) for Japan at all (at least not yet).

If nationwide or global shortages begin and they don't hit their target then yeah someone at their distribution or planning office needs to go. If the shortages do happen and they hit or exceed their target then it's hard to blame them considering demand was extremely high.

But yeah this doesn't seem like rampant shortages yet.

They had plenty of stock according to their financial report so I'm sure any shortages should quickly be restocked unless there has been some major blunder in logisitcs.

This is most likely either general logistic issues that will be solved quickly or those retailers not ordering enough for their online stores. I believe yesterday was a holiday in Japan so I assume a lot of Switch's are being sold through the weekend.

That's it now, once that word shortage hits headlines the switch craze strikes again and everyone will want one

Also, it's NintendoSoup, so I'm not sure why people are taking it so seriously

I have to agree with this post. Nintendo centric blog sites like Nintendo Soup have a history of taking minor pieces of news and then reframing the situation to make it sound bigger or more important than it actually is.
