Oh right, I had seen that game a few months ago. That Metroid Prime-HUD obviously drew my attention :D

They certainly have the pedigree.

Not really a fan of that visual style. Mainly that it looks like the whole game is being rendered at a very low resolution. It doesn't really feel "retro" so much as you just took a modern game and set the deferred rendering resolution setting to like 50 or 25%.

This is kind of where I'm at. It's admittedly kind of neat, but it simultaneously not super pleasant to look at.

The game itself looks fun, though, and I love the Metroid Prime-esque HUD.

I'd agree that it looks like a modern game at low res rather than retro, but it looks great, and I love the blood/gore effects. I'll have to keep my eyes on this one. I need more games like this in my life.

Is there an option to turn off the low-resolution effects? I can't tell if that is just a filter or what.

There's lots of little things that bother me. I think the biggest one is probably the way everything looks anti-aliased with soft edges which is then subjected to universal downscaling, and those two elements really don't jive together. It just hurts the overall readability way too much. Graphics should first and foremost serve a functional purpose and this technique goes directly against that when it gets tougher to distinguish things like HUD text and sprites from the surrounding environment. This was not really something you had to deal with in old shooters and feels more like a byproduct of their method of technical approximization for retro visuals rather than a deliberate design choice in itself.

I love the old school aesthetic, but I'm not a fan of low resolution rendering. When I play Doom WADs I have my rendering set to my monitor's native resolution and everything looks beautifully sharp and defined. It's great. This really looks like when you set the rendering scalar to the lowest possible value in a game with that setting. Also, I can't tell if it's just an effect from the trailer, but is the game also simulating the screen door effect? The commitment to the look is admirable, but I hope I can tailor the visual to how I like my throwbacks.

Besides a tiny bit of bunny hopping over lava, there wasn't much cool movement shown but I have hopes you'll be able to zip around. Regardless, this looks cool and I'll undoubtedly add it to the ranks of DUSK, Amid Evil, and Ion Maiden of excellent old school shooters.

Isn't this just a modern game with super low res? Doesn't look retro at all to me.

It has 2D sprites. I also have mixed feelings about it, mainly the overuse of specularity. It would look much better if they could redesign that in some way. Make things remind me less of early 2000's plasticy and more of the photoedited Doom sprites...

Geez, what's up with these kind of retro-looking shooters having the most overdone lightning ever? Game looks like an eyesore.

Ok I want this now.

Hopefully it launches on GNU/Linux as well. Unity is pretty easy for supporting multiplatform executables.

The readability of the screen look's terrible. Playing the classic Doom games I never have so much trouble distinguishing the enemies from the background. The copious amount of blood blocking the screen whenever you shoot something isn't helping either.

I like the look, but I agree with this. Last night I was watching some footage of Soldier of Fortune thinking to myself that a lot of these "retro" inspired modern shooters aren't nailing the look of actual retro games.

The visual style gives me flashbacks to having borked up the graphics card driver installation in the early 00s and playing Counter-Strike in the software renderer. It looked pretty much like this. Which is to say pretty cool but not very conducive to making those damn split-second headshots that mean winning or losing in that game XD

Looks super cool. The one thing to consider though is that these games live or die based on the quality of their level design. Doom 1 and Quake 1 had the typical Romero level design, which was honestly pretty damn good. I hope they took their time designing the maps to make them awesome.

Grey enemies that explode on red splashes covering the whole screen on grey backgrounds with red/orange lightning.

I can't see shit. Work on your color pallettes pls.

Metroid Prime Hunters had more readability on the DS screen.

I think they need to tweak some visibility settings there, but I like the CRT filter -- though YouTube compression is not kind to it.

This looks fucking amazing to me. Ultra cool in an awesome retro throwback kind of way. Insta-bought on Steam whenever it releases.

I don't remember my CRT having a screen door effect and the FOV is painfully low. Other than that it has some potential.

It certainly looks like DOOM. I don't understand what the point of having a unique visual effect is if you're going to waste it on such a derivative style.

Pretty much my thoughts.

Even if you ignore the blood splatter(which one shouldn't because it is terrible), every visual element here seems designed to blend in together which is the worst possible thing for a game like this.

Fantastically ugly looking and if I was Bethesda I'd be asking questions about design cues. Wow. No thanks.

Holy shit! YES! I dig this style. I was not expecting to see that.

I remember trying to describe this style some friends some time ago. Some old PS1/Genesis games looked like this. My friends mentioned it was likely 3D models turned into sprites, resulting in a really dark and creepy look.

I'm trying to remember some examples... was Iron Man and X-0 Manowar done this way?

Looks a bit jarring to me, seeing all the pixels with modern effects. And this is coming from someone played Dark Souls 3 at 800x450 to have playable framerate but still turn Effects up to High so that there's a special effect when the bonfire's lit, and Doom 2016 at 50% of 720p but have all the Post-Processing enabled

Yep, you summed it up well.

Still, the gameplay looks good, so I'm definitely interested.

EDIT: The more I look at it, it actually makes me think of 3DS games. If you imagine it as some lost FPS for the 3DS, the visuals kinda fit.

Yep. If the game used 3D models instead of sprites, what they showed is probably what it would look like running on Intel integrated graphics.
