Playing Unholy Heights on the Switch without sound. I'm playing in bed next to my gf, because I wake up early. Suddenly the game turned to LOUD RUMBLE BUZZING.

My girlfriend woke up. Oops.

There are no options to disable rumble, so I'm not sure I'll ever return to the game.

Have your games ever disrupted others badly? Is there a warning list for non-silent Switch games?

Unexpected normal rumble on a glass coffee table has done this to me before too >.< Set down my controller during a cutscene to quickly duck out and grab my toothbrush while my SO is sleeping in the next room, then it went berserk when something exploded.

In before a ton of "thought this was AI generated."
I find this more believable than claims of the 'PS4 beep' waking someone in another room.
Had that happen too :(

I hope you weren't playing Senran Kagura Reflexions, otherwise you've got some explaining to do.

I got told off for playing Bayonetta 2 in bed because the rumble on the chainsaws are LOUD.

You can turn the rumble off in the Switch settings though, even if a specific game won't let you turn it off. That's what I had to do for Tropical Freeze.

I see what you did there.

OT: you can disable controller vibration altogether in Switch's system setting

Kirby Star Allies HD rumble surprised my brother and I. We were hearing some Green Greens theme thinking it was from the TV, but instead it was coming from the joy-cons day on the table.

Diablo 3 is real annoying with one boss that randomly makes the Joy Cons go crazy when it scrapes the ground with its swords. None of the other bosses do it, so it was pretty jarring.

Bro, I don't want to like intrude on your relationship but have you tried a Rumble Pak? Might spice things up a bit.

I wonder if a joy-con could be used as a vibrator.

Rumble on Switch is very poorly implemented in too many games.
I had the same problem with a couple games, The Mummy Demastered and Axiom Verge if I'm not mistaken. Loud buzzing that's absolutely going to wake up nearby people, and it's obnoxious in general. I usually turn rumble off completely in such games.

I really hate it that a lot of switch games have really obnoxious hd rumble that basically makes a REALLY loud drilling/whining noise and no option to switch it off. Often it's only in one or two rare situations which makes it even worse that it ruins the rumble in that game.

And the only choice is to turn it off for all games so you miss it in ones that have a sensible implementation, or manually switch it on or off in the system settings every time you play a different game.

I actually had to stop playing Arena of Valour because of this, when your ancient is being attacked it makes a noise like someone drilling into the side of the switch.

Better turn that off OP, HD rumble is shit in most games. It's a waste of battery and a useless gimmick, at least it can be turned off *looking at DS4 lightbar*

Does not surprise me. I tried to play Lumines while my wife was sleeping. Had to stop pretty quickly.

Funny thread setup aside, HD rumble is really bad. If you're playing in handheld it's atrocious.

I wish Nintendo would give the option in system setting to have different rumble settings whether you're handheld or docked. I'd like rumble on for docked but off for handheld (it's just not good rumble, and way too buzzy).

Yes please omfg. I disabled rumble on a few games solely because it was bad in handheld mode.

I am 31 and what is this
Well normal rumble is just a motor which spins, creating a vibration. Basically.

HD rumble uses linear actuators, similar to apple's "Taptic engine" which is what they use for the Force Touch stuff in the new iPhones and Apple Watch. I BELIEVE that these are different in that they are more like weighted electro magnets, rather than a simple spinning motor. This means you can create a much, much more subtle variety of sensations compared to a rumble motor which is pretty much just a spinning motor - all they can really do is produce differing speeds of vibration.

I'm not an expert myself but I'm sure others on here can give you more of a technical explanation of how the actuators actually work.
