According to a live event with a different Japanese dev there is allegedly a gag order or NDA or something with Sony thats preventing devs from directly saying their games are censored
That must not be true anymore, since KT mentioned DoaX3 Scarlet would be censored on PS4 and IFI did the same for Varnir and Date a Live.

Are people seriously more concerned with Sony's censorship than they are over Erica's portrayal? If it's not changed in this new version atlus fucked up.

What exactly was wrong with Erica's portrayal? Its been a long time since I played the original but as far as I remember Vincent and pals treated her completely normally despite knowing about her "secret."

Toby understandably freaked out when he found out the secret but as far as I could tell he didnt appear to resent her after the intial shock and as far as we know may have continued the relationship.

There are a bunch of questionable things around her, especially the whole thing about her dreams being like the men characters.

But the actual main problem seems to be the new character. The trailers and marketing are playing her with the "trap" trope, sadly.

They punted on the question and never actually said it wouldn't just that there wouldn't be those ugly solar flares.

Aka it'll be censored.

No mysterious lights, BUT they didn't say it won't be censored.
Yep, developers have even gone back and change the game's art, as the god lights were too distracting and ugly. Changes can still happen, and only until when it gets released would we know if it is censorship free.

Even Vincent and crew, despite being friends with her, don't really treat her like a woman. They make a bunch of off hand comments and insinuations as the game goes on. Worst thing is the credits scene straight up refers to her by her old name. That's one of the most disrespectful things you can do to a trans person.
Plus, how the hell can Toby tell the difference between a natural and post op vagina?

Dunno about Rin's deal. All I've heard is the director saying he's working with themes he wasn't able to seven years ago. Maybe they'll surprise me. Probably not. But maybe! But probably not.

I bet this game will manage to be censored and still transphobic anyway. Sony will ask them to cover some boobs (which they shouldn't, Sony isn't CERO to control devs like this), but I doubt they care how trans people are treated in it.
If they want to better improve it, they should just write extra scenes or dialogue that treat the character with better respect. The complete opposite of cutting content.
EDIT: After reading other comments, yeah. They should just rewrite a ton of lines. I stupidly came in here and posted something without having played the game.

"There are no mysterious lights" is a oversimplified translation.
The word "入る" is borrowed from the 2nd question.
https://twitter.com/stud_zero/status/1063271665944027136
It's same with "謎の光" is borrowed from the 1st question.

You're right. I should've realized this is important when posting. I added an update.

Gematsu said:
Update 11/24/18 at 12:40 a.m.: It should be clarified that when answering all these questions in one go, Atlus uses the verb that we will translate to "not included" in two of the responses (but they all connect). It is sort of like this:

  • Q: "The scenes in the trailers won't get hidden by mysterious lights, will they?"
A: "As for mysterious lights being in Catherine: Full Body…"
  • Q: "Are there any regulations that weren't in the PlayStation 3 version being put in? That's the only thing I'm a bit worried about."
A: "They are…" (to be continued)
  • Q: "Are white lights going to shine over the ecchi scenes?"
A: "…not included!" (We went as far as we could go without the light shining.)
  • Q: "In regards to recent talk surrounding PS4, are there any regulations? I want an honest answer."
A: "To everyone worried about that, we love you. (We received about 10 more of the same question.)"
It was a bit difficult to put into English, thus our initial simplified translation. I realized late that this changes the context a bit, and makes it sound as if they are answering each question individually rather than just the "mysterious lights" question.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like some of the content has been edited, just no white beams of light. :/
Yeah, now that it's clear they were responding to the regulation question with that answer, saying they went as far as they could go without light shining makes it clear they had to cut content they wanted in this game to appease Sony.

Again, likely all that would be edited is the fanservice photos sent to Vincent. Which I believe they've already shown off for this release, though obviously these policies are a very sudden thing.

So... unless you sincerely care about whether or not they included the ability for the girls to send you nudes in this, mysterious lights on them or otherwise, you will probably not enjoy the game any less.

Oh, don't worry, that's an improvement over them blaming this on Sony's HQ being in California because that's where all the "SJWs" are. Y'know, extremely stereotypical GG rhetoric.

I don't understand Sony sticking their noses into things lately. If people don't like it, they don't have to buy it. I have a very easy time not consuming media I am not interested in or made a bit uncomfortable by. How many people that kicked up a fuss over DOA Xtreme had any intention of buying or watching it? A whole lot of fuss about a whole lot of nothing. It's OK to think something is distasteful without campaigning for it to be censored.

In the case of those DOA Xtreme games it's some real incel looking crap to me but hey have at it. Hell do I care if some guys wanna jack it to Hitomi in a bunny costume? They aren't even good games to begin with so it's not like the gratuitous stuff is getting in the way of something actually worth your time.

It doesn't matter how much, how little or what is being censored none of this shit should be happening at all

After quickly having to censor it for release they decided to patch it and replace the censored scenes with altered scenes.

it's bad either way
if they censor the game, it's bad cuz they censored a game.
if they don't, it's bad because it shows their hypocrisy, that they're selective when they want to force their new policies and only do it when they think they can get away with it or when the backlash isn't going to be too big.
i don't think sony should have any right to censor any game, that's what rating boards are for. as long as a game isn't adult-only it shouldn't be any of their business, but if they're so insistent on policing the content on their platform they should put out clear guidelines for developers and users so people can know what is and what isn't allowed, and then force those guidelines on every game without exception.

A steady regression of things has me questioning my faith in Sony to provide me with a quality product that's up to standard with the Playstation brand since the first system.
1. the move from Japan to California-- it seems Sony is eager to be Xbox to US and UK instead of what they've been: a Japanese console with both Japanese and Western games for a multitude of gamers instead of only one or the other.

2. Wanting to heard every one of their players in to a separate pen to only play among themselves. Not unlike Nationalists who don't want to be part of the world. Cross play is important to a some of us.

3. Censorship outside of rating board decisions.

What does this even mean? As far as we know all the games that are getting changes had elements of sexual molestation and/or underage girls in sexual situations...

That's a suspiciously specific denial.

Compile Heart seem to have pre-emptively censored Arc of Alchemist with a crude redesign of a character. The place I got linked to turned out to be an alt right cesspit so I'm not going to source it and give them the signal boost.

EDIT:

That's not true AFAIK. The game with all the god rays censorship had adult/college aged characters and no touching, simply risque imagery.

the part you underlined isn't the point of my post, the point was people have to know for sure what is being censored and what the new policy is. they have to make it clear, people shouldn't have to look at the games that are being censored and then guess the policy. if the policy is clear, people would know for sure if catherine is going to be censored or not.

I'd rather nothing gets censored but I really just wanna see what all the fuss is about the puzzle gameplay. It looks fun, but people seemed to really like it? Even made it competitive, from what I've read, I think.

Yes, they did. Originally she was only wearing her underwear, but the developers were force to censor the scene, and needed to add light rays to get the approval from Sony. A couple weeks later they created new scenes, specific only to this version, as they found the rays too ugly to see. And FYI all the girls in this visual novel are 18 years old, and older.

So this narrative that Sony is only censoring under aged content is false?

I mean, there's a difference between "the characters are adults" and "these characters are absolutely all over 18; however, they inexplicably attend what is basically a high school". The one that's been repeatedly posted in some of these threads sure seems like the latter.

However, I don't think the policy has been applied exclusively to games that fit that second description, if only because I know little about the games involved. What is clear is that it has been applied only to fanservice content. Catherine contains some specific things that are that and not just "sexy"/sexual/about sexuality like the rest of the game; we will see if those get changed.

I just don't understand why people expect the actual real content of the game to change, when we know what was affected in other games.

Like, is really hard to be on the side of those developers when the biggest examples so far are:

Omega Labyrinth Z said:
"In one mini game, the player is given the objective to sexually arouse a sleeping small child holding a teddy bear, whilst she verbally rejects"
Senran Kagura said:
The expression and voice clips of this girl when she is touched in "that" mode
J0YBWPQ.png
Totally consensual
Nora Princess and Stray Cat said:
Normalizing groping... also a LOT of those characters look like they don't belong in college...
45867383102_1786d5bdb5_z.jpg

But honestly, has anyone tried to get a hold of Sony new policies? Contacting a big outlet so they can investigate? Because most of the search results just lead to reddit and some sketchy sites tbh...

Then again after watching some of the games censored I doubt any serious outlet will try to stir the pot.

This gen they be been making some questionable decisions. I feel like some of it is money motivated though, if it looks off then you can make a solid guess it has to do with money. The random increase in PS+ a few years ago and the stance against cross play come to mind. I'm sure there are more examples. Success this generation has changed the brand, for better or worse. I really hope competition next gen is fierce enough to keep everyone on their toes.

lol at that PR speak trap. Saying that it isn't censored on one way, but not talking about it not being censored at all. Allright then, so it's censored in another way.
