I was at a little gathering earlier tonight and a friend of a friend said that in a very sure of himself manner... I chuckled and proceeded to tell him that Sony and Playstation are doing better than ever and they're way on top of an industry that is seeing record numbers all around... He doubles down and says "the guy" that told him this "really knows his shit"...

I proceed to show him and the others at the table multiple articles citing Sony and PlayStation's record profits and how Ps4 just posted the best October sales in 16 years... He quietly nods and changes the subject to movies and Game of Thrones...

So, for discussion sake... What are your stories where you've had to school someone that was making outlandish and blatantly stupid claims about a videogame, system or company?

Talk about a clickbait title for your thanksgiving table discussions. BUT. For the sake of discussion, I always just dismiss them.

I've learned to nod my head and say "that's interesting" with any bullshit people tell me.

Well, I don't know how your circle of friends operates there, but this sounds like you were being "that guy." I'm just the type to nod and go "uh huh."

A kid on the playground in elementary school was convinced you could unlock Goku in Melee if you beat 10 enemies in Cruel Melee mode. What a fucking idiot. Everyone knows you needed to beat 15 enemies, not 10.

I had someone tell me PS4 is only winning in Japan, everywhere else is XBO. I told him that wasn't the case. He was having none of it.

I remember someone telling me Dreamcast can play PS2 games, but I imagine she was talking about Bleem.

Four years ago in class: "I heard Rockstar is going to make GTA 6 take place across all of America."

Me: "That's not true. Where'd you hear that?"

Them: "Rockstar themselves said it."

Me: "What are you talking about..?"

Them: "I saw it on YouTube."

I was completely unable to convince them that none of this ever happened.

Well, Sony is kind of a disaster outside of the PlayStation division but that's a different story...

My personal favorite example of something like this was a friend of mine telling me "Activision is selling Call of Duty to Ubisoft and shutting down, they're hemorrhaging money and don't have any other series going."

I didn't have the heart (or patience) to explain that Activision and Blizzard are a singular entity, Destiny exists, Crash happened and Call of Duty is still selling like water in a desert.

Back in 2005, I remember a GameStop employee repeatedly telling me that Devil May Cry 1, 2, 3 were available on the Xbox. That they weren't PS2 exclusives.

Drove me nuts for a few days.

No at school and not about a game per se, but heard this from a former co-worker at a GameStop I worked at years ago about a customer he had.

Co-Worker: Proceeds to pitch the Game Informer discount card to a customer.

Customer's Friend That Was With Him: "Don't buy that card, it will ruin your credit score."

Co-Worker: "No it won't. It's just a discount card."

Customer's Friend: "Yes it will. I'm a Finance major."

Co-Worker: "How will it ruin your credit score? I wanna know."

Customer's Friend: "Just trust me, I'm a Finance major."

My friend swears he caught a mew under a truck near the S.S. Anne. I keep trying to use strength to move it, but it won't work. I'm starting to think he lied to me...

I once had a professor that told the class that the only reason ps4 didn't have always online drm is because the response to the Xbox one had been a disaster. We were talking about copyrights so it was sort of on topic, but he went so far as to say that Sony scrapped their drm plans at the last minute so they could "burn Microsoft" with that cute little used games video. He was a middle aged man so it seemed pretty odd coming from him.

stuff like that is super common

my sister is more knowledgeable then your average joe when it comes to video games but she still occasionally asks me stuff like "do they make Zelda games for the Xbox" or "how much is Fortnite"

Knew a guy in high school who was super insistent that Apple would remotely brick your iPod if you loaded MP3s onto it that you didn't buy on iTunes. He had like 3-4 Linkin Park albums on his and nothing else.

Some people on here believe that. Patrick Klepeck believed it even.

That whole situation was bizarre. Shu had already confirmed no DRM months earlier. Why a hashtag was used, and then celebrated for delivering something they'd already promised was absurd.

That whole period was strange. People saying the publishers could force Sony to do it. That rumour that all the E3 next gen demos were going to be XBO.

Can't wait for the madness to begin anew...

I just ran into a "my uncle works for" guy the other week during a kijiji sale. I was tempted to boot up an unreleased game and blow his mind so that he could have a real story to tell but I let it slide. I don't know why he pulled the uncle card though, dude seemed to know his games more than most people. For a second I thought maybe he was an era member trying to troll.

As for the op guy. Had the PS4 not been so successful I could see it happening but considering it's one of the big money makers that brought Sony back from implosion that would be one of the dumbest business decisions ever.

Right, but this was a guy running a GameStop in 2005 telling people in the store "You can get Devil May Cry on the Xbox." This was the kind of thing you think he'd know purely through his line of work.

One friend told me that his dad worked at Sony and said that the PS4 would feature a multi-dvd tray that could hold multiple discs at once and change them at will.

I think the PS3 was only out for a year or two when he told that story.

Years before that, another friend told me that some random stranger came up to him, asked if he "wanted to play some games" and took him "behind a bush down a hole" that was an entrance to an arcade that had a bunch of games, including the, at the time, unreleased Super Smash Bros Melee.

Yeah, good times.
