https://gematsu.com/2018/11/atlus-r...ony-regulations-affecting-catherine-full-body

Atlus' Studio Zero has responded to questions regarding Sony Interactive Entertainment's recent regulations regarding adult content affecting Catherine: Full Body in a series of tweets (2, 3, 4).

Studio Zero responded to these tweets all at once via the following:

I will report this here for everyone.

There are no mysterious lights in Catherine: Full Body. (We went as far as we could go without the light shining.) To everyone worried about that, we love you. (We received about 10 more of the same question.)

No lights means nothing to censor.

A new renaissance of purity has arrived at last!

I'll wait and see. In previous cases publishers/developers said the same and many things were changed

Like I said in another thread, I wonder how many people that thought it would be censored even played Catherine. It's not the game you'd expect based on the box art and plot premise.

The original wasn't, but this is the version where they're adding things like the "yearning older sister" voice from the company that brought us the Radiant Historia remake with all of the skeevy CG added.

I'm confused.
Is the quote in the OP the translation of all 4 tweets or only the last one?
Looks like the last one, so what did the other tweets say?

No God Rays from here on out because games have had enough time to go back and redo completly instead of the quick fix beams from before.

No "mysterious lights" doesn't really tell me whether the game did/didn't have any edits done. Personally, it still sounds to me like some censoring was definitely done, but I guess only Atlus themselves know.

I feel like I'm out of the loop?

The original release of Catherine was pretty tame, beyond entendres and some thematic content.

Do we have a reason to believe they're pushing things this time around?

The game legitimately missed out on a lot of the hallmarks of the erotic thriller genre by pulling so many punches....but maybe it wouldn't even benefit from it?

The block dude segments are awesome though.

Edit: took too long to type this and I guess my question was answered. But I'll believe it when I see it.

"We went as far as we could without the light shining" doesn't that just mean they worked within Sony's regulations, as in self cenorship? And since Sony demands the game be the same in all regions, there wont be an uncensored japanese version.

Thanks San Mateo.

Nekopara dev said the same thing about no SNOY light beams but then the PS4 version was released and it had lots of magic steam everywhere so I expect that this response is just PR bullshit trying to make it sound like theres no changes

I cant wait to see how censorship apologists defend this one.

Honestly, it reads more in line of either holding back purposely based off of guidelines by Sony, or they made changes based off suggestions of Sony. That's how I take it.

I think what sucks more about this is these policies can be especially expensive to smaller publishers. Even though they clear local rating agencies (CERO in this instance), Sony may require additional changes, which costs money. I'm not so concerned about Atlus or most major publishers, in terms of having to put additional development time into these changes, but the smaller ones, it must be aggravating, especially with the whole English translation requirement.

This is where I take more issue towards.

(EDIT: One last note, I was kinda surprised both this and the original release got a C/15+ rating in Japan, given the Adult nature of the game and who the target audience is.)

Has this effected anything other than visual novels or clearly fan service games like DOA Xtreme?

Nekopara's developers also said the PS4 version does not have mysterious light, but it turns out to be different from Switch version.

Edit: Of course I don't want any censorship for Catherine, but no mysterious light =/= no censorship.

Are people seriously more concerned with Sony's censorship than they are over Erica's portrayal? If it's not changed in this new version atlus fucked up.

It's a shame the game isn't coming to any non-Sony platforms so we can judge. That tweet seemed very carefully worded.

I bet this game will manage to be censored and still transphobic anyway. Sony will ask them to cover some boobs (which they shouldn't, Sony isn't CERO to control devs like this), but I doubt they care how trans people are treated in it.
