Apart from the loss of 2D charm at most, it's pretty hard to see how the series has become a 'generic city builder' given the fundamentals have always been production chains and using trade to boost incomes while satisfying increasing population requirements. Nothing wrong with more city-building options, and there are difficulties + scenarios in 1404/2070 dedicated to building cities through trade (without taxes).

True, but i'm talking about the system that 1503 had, where your primary source of income consisted of selling goods to your population (no taxation involved whatsoever) with a supply/demand system based on their needs. This meant that resource managing was a very complex juggling affair since production could very easily exceed the needs of your subjects, and making you lose money on goods rather than earn on them by having them sit in a warehouse.

Its that level of economical complexity that i miss from modern anno games, and i remember being quite cross over the fact that 1404 had removed it in favor of a standard taxation system. (Never played 1701)

Don't know which setting you prefer, if you like the modern setting I'd check out 2070. If you like a less modern setting go for 1404 or 1701.

Are these versions pretty approachable for people new to the franchise? I've been meaning to try this series but have never been sure of a good jumping on point.

Meh, unless they return to what made the series unique (1602/1503 - Colony builder where you start from nothing and have money being acquired from the selling of goods rather than taxes) rather han a generic city builder, i'm still not interested.

Sadly, I'm with you. 1503 and especially 1602 were real gems and just felt and played differently. Since then no other Anno game hooked me again, but I will probably give this one a try down the line. At leasts it's not futuristic anymore.

Com_Raven How will the game compare in terms of complexity to other Anno games?

I don't like making bold claims like "this is the most complex Anno ever", especially as I think that complexity is something that can be perceived very differently by different people. With that said, our stated goal is definitely to create a very deep and complex Anno game (so a mix of city building, economic sim and other strategy elements like diplomacy, naval battles etc)- definitely much more so than 2205!

We have made big changes to some of the core gameplay, for starters. Every tier now has its own workforce, so even if you built an island over 100 hours, you will still need to make sure to have enough tier 1 farmers to work in the fields, etc. We have also split up basic needs (required to advance to next tier) and citizen happiness, allowing you to be an exploitative rubber baron while still making progress- both of those already add more complexity. And of course we have quite a few new features as well, like city attractiveness, expeditions etc.

I haven't had a chance to search around too much yet, but we hosted quite a few influencers at gamescom, so expect to see a lot more videos pop up soon. We will also definitely host a stream to go into detail on our gc announcements in the coming weeks.

Anybody know why the numbers in these games always add up to 9?

No one knows- not even here on the team^^ The reason and origin is lost to time, but we know it is important to fans, so we will stick with it :)

Playing Anno since 1602. 1503 has the best soundtrack, though, but I skipped the modern ones. Reviews, not the setting, drove me off and the fact that I was still super happy with 1404 and its addon. Still playing it today occasionally. Graphics are beautiful, management mechanics has a lot of deapth without being too complex and I like the small things like doing quests and getting fame for it, which then can be exchanged for traits, perks or goods. All in all, the perfect city building game for me.

Anno 1800 have gotten my attention and I'm really considering in buying it.

Seriously, how do you say Anno without it sounding like ''anal''? Help.
Pronounce it in German. Like the 'a' in the British pronounced 'dance', but with a shorter 'a'.

I didn't even know a new Anno was being released? I sunk thousands of hours into 1404. Do we have any Gameplay trailers/walkthroughs available yet?

We have so far released three trailers (announcement, E3 2018 and gamescom 2018), and done some gameplay streams (the next one will be tomorrow German time). We also had a lot of press and influencers capture gameplay recently, so you should be able to find a lot on youtube these days.
