This trilogy started out great and slowly lost focus.

Tomb Raider was focused, singular and consistently thrilling from beginning to end.

Rise suffered with a story that confusingly took the focus away from adventure and more on daddy issues of a naive but spontaneous Lara. But still the game had a strong visual focus and provided series high set-pieces.

Shadow scrambled on all fronts with a lack of vision and a derivation from core adventure to a naive and now brash Lara coming to terms with her mistakes. But besides narrative, It also jumbled up so many mechanics and cared to finesse not none. And the visuals lacked magnificence or true sense of wonder and terror.

Worst of the trilogy and a game that clearly didn't have a clear direction or focus. It's like they wanted to make a classic Tomb Raider but then just brute forced it by adding more but not necessarily better puzzles. It's obvious they didn't want it to be like Rise but that is essentially what the last third of the game devolves into (after hours of barely any combat and only puzzles). The biggest issue for me is that the writing is still poor and the characters as forgettable as ever. When Jonah is a main cast member that's an immediate red flag.
My opinions exactly.

Welcome . I m disappointed that we r not getting story dlc like baba yaga of rise of tomb raider . Those were amazing.this game is just 7 tomb challenge. That's it .

Thats my only gripe with the game. I got the collectors edition free (Best Buy Points) so I am not angry. I would be fuming if I spent that money and only get Tomb puzzle DLC.

On a positive note the sound design is some of the best I have heard this generation.

Absolutely. The amount of environmental sound makes up for what I still see as shortcomings in the graphics department, although again I'd say the few letdowns in the sound department have nothing to do with audio design and only reflect poorly on technical implementation. Other characters voices get very quiet very quickly when they're not right next to Lara even after I tinker with dynamic range settings in options. It's like It was coded using the same ancient, naive assumption that sounds originate from a point source that plagued game designs many years ago.

I'm intrigued that impressions vary so wildly on the graphics front. Is the PC version's lighting better? I tried flipping HDR on and off and experimenting with various brightness and contrast settings in game but I can't get away from the fairly muddy, washed out flat look compared to other recent titles on my PS4 Pro.

This is one of the best looking games ever made, OP is wrong.
Lol MS ? What does any of what I said have anything to do with MS?Babe u better wake up .she has always been a PlayStation figure as illustrated by the weak sales on x1 ;) and no it is not one of the best looking games .the animations of Lara is kinda weak sauce .it's weaker than rise and even the animations in rise were nothing to write home about . Environment and lighting looks good though .

Not really LLTP as it only came out 2 months ago, but I enjoyed reading the impressions.

Will probably pick this up in the December PSN sale.

I enjoyed the game enough to get the platinum trophy but I was left pretty disappointed by the story and characters, a lot of wasted potential but I would still give it 7/10.

I watched ultra settings walkthough on YT and it was one of the best looking games (yt compression acknowledged). But that's PC.

Apart from that I can see the effort the devs put in, but like the others, it is so not my type of game.

Also, the photo mode is hilarious.

No. And while the launch version featured a bunch of callbacks to classic Tomb Raider in its ending, these were removed in the Day 1 patch. They seem to have a very strange relationship with any Tomb Raider game predating 2013. They straight up stripped out a direct reference to Natla.

Whaaaaaat I need the details on this. Are you serious?

People reeeaaaallllyyy want to hate this series, huh? Kind of interesting phenomena.
I was late to the reboot, but I don't recall seeing any hate for the two prior games. They are great. I was very excited for this one and I only made it a few hours in. The plot is horrendous.

There's no phenomenon, 2013 and Rise were both well received generally outside of people who want classic Tomb Raider (which happens to literally every series that gets rebooted). This one doesn't really appeal that much to either group.

I really don't undertand what it's flat or bad about the graphic. Maybe the artistic design? Because hear the graphic is subpar leave me confuse. That's a very impressive engine in any platform and even DF has reported it in the video analysis.

The graphics in Shadow were like the opposite of Rise to me. In Rise the open world areas looked weak but interiors were fantastic. In Shadow the forest looks really nice but the interiors this this around are flat.

The art doesn't seem to be the problem. In fact, as I get deeper into the game I've found numerous areas and scenes that are ambitious with a really interesting color palette. I maintain that it's the lighting that is generally a letdown. Interiors suffer from an unnatural ambient light that gives everything a uniformly washed out look. My television is carefully calibrated and doesn't have a problem with any other material, but here there's no way to get black levels low enough to look decent without making it impossible to play the game.

It's unfortunate because I'm actually quite enjoying the game despite the clunky mechanics and uneven graphics. The story actually has my attention, and while I've suffered through some of the writing I've seen complaints about, I still ultimately want to see what happens with these characters. It's not a bad game by any stretch, and at the current prices it's well worth a try if you've been interested.

I wouldn't call it hate but man the comments around the first game prior to release were interesting, at least on gaf anyways. Didn't help with the dev making that "You'll want to protect her" comment which I've actually still seen thrown around recently.

Rise was an Xbox exclusive so you can imagine that went at the time.

I'm not trying to downplay peoples criticisms of the series, not in any sense (I have my problems with the series as well) but the reboots have had their time in the conversation spotlight.

I personally think that in 5 years people are gonna be asking, "So... what was actually wrong with Shadow of the Tomb Raider?" The game released at a bad time, had a lot of baggage hanging over its head, and I think that after the dust clears the game will more widely be seen for what it tried to be. It tried to please multiple camps with varying degrees of success. It had some really good ideas. I've started a second playthough on PC and it is the most beautiful game I've played in some sections. Just beautiful art design, lighting, animation, etc. Mechanically it's pretty damn solid. It's not like Thief 4 where the game is blatantly half-baked and incoherent mechanically, clearly pieced together from a disaster of a dev cycle. It's a good game. An uneven game with some structural issues and writing that varies in quality, but since when was Tomb Raider a consistent series? The games have always done some things right, some things dumb, some things rushed. The runaway success of TR2013 meant that any Tomb Raider game that wasn't gun blazing TPS action was going to face a lot of apathy and negativity. Something similar happened with Deus Ex; Mankind Divided. People who'd only played Human Revolution, by far the most popular game in the series, expected Mankind Divided to be less walking around Prague and more shootouts in cliched cyberpunk settings. When they got slow paced exploration and lots of talking they were left cold. These kind of successful action-oriented reboots always cause problems for games that try to meet in the middle with two fanbases that want very different things.

I've been looking at the Steam reviews. They've seen a significant uptick to 78% positive recently where it was deep in the yellow before the recent Steam sales. Shadow of the Tomb Raider was quite heavily review bombed back in October, particularly by Chinese audiences, because Square Enix put the game on sale for a 34% discount a month after release. It was one of the most bizarre and petty backlashes against a game I've ever seen. Oh, no, more people will buy and enjoy the game, what an outrage! You had a sea of red thumbs with many people admitting they enjoyed the game but they wanted to make a statement that discounting games so soon after release was unacceptable. It feels to me like review bombing has been weaponized in a concerning way. There were always people rushing to leave negative MC reviews over petty stuff. But nowdays they can use Steam, MC, and various forms of social media to whip up a hate campaign against a game or developer in short order, and it's straight up bullying at times.
Whaaaaaat I need the details on this. Are you serious?

Uneven graphic. :/ Honestly you are far pointless to point out what it's bad about the graphic tech. You are talking about the nothing for the whole time and I say to you with the max respect. I bought the game yesterday with the black Friday deal and honestly I don't know what's wrong with your eyes with all respect. It's one of the most impressive engine I played on Pro so far. I'm not saying graphically it's flawless, animations are clunky like the previous, speaking which I'm not sure what is it this step back because IQ finally is magnificent where the previous was a shimmering/aliasing fest and just the 4k mode solved it, with bad performance and lower ps4 graphic setting. Now if you want to say the whole game and the gameplay is a disappointment, I can respect it but graphically is not absolutely a letdown and far the contrary. I invite you to watch the DF video about it because goes where in deep on the evolution of the engine.

If anyone is playing the PC version with a mouse and keyboard, I strongly recommend disabling "Center Camera Horizontally". With this setting enabled, it is impossible to run directly left or right in some areas without affecting the camera. Instead, Lara will run in a circle because the camera will constantly auto-adjust to be behind her. It's a controller-oriented accessibility thing designed to make the game largely playable using a single analogue stick. Since you're playing with a mouse and keyboard, you have total camera control via the mouse. You don't need the game to "help" point the camera where you want it to go. I'm honestly a bit puzzled this was left as the default. The problems with the setting are fairly obvious. Although it's possible they've changed it the most recent patch, although I doubt it.

Still looks far better than ps3 games to me.

If I'd said "it looks like a PS3 game" that would be a reasonable observation. I said the basic lighting model wouldn't look out of place on a PS3 title. The screen shots I posted earlier have decent texture work and nice models, but they're still pretty flat - and those were selected from a review where the objective was to make the game look good. As it progresses there are some nice special effects and better lighting, primarily in cut scenes, but there's still plenty of this, taken from my play session last night:

JQXekT9.png

This was captured directly in PNG form with no editing. No hyperbole. The only explanation I can come up with is that their adjustments for peak brightness must be messing with the gamma curve something awful. I'll try ignoring their instructions for adjusting HDR settings and see if I can't improve the image dramatically later today, but as I said I tried with HDR disabled and didn't see it as superior.

I finished it up earlier today, game was super mediocre and easily the worst of the trilogy. The plot felt like it kinda meandered, and I don't know why they had so many guns/upgrades when there's hardly any combat to use them in.

I just finished it myself, and quite enjoyed it despite the shortcomings. It's not going to have anyone's idea of great gunplay mechanics, but if you're there for puzzles, exotic locales, spectacular set pieces, and story? There's an above-average game to be had here. Much as I'm in the minority regarding the graphics (which resisted all attempts at adjustment to avoid the feeling of watching a movie on a badly calibrated television), I suspect I'm in a minority regarding the story – which I loved. Actually my favorite of the recent three, occasional dubious dialogue and all.

I'd have been fine with this direction if they had followed through with it in every aspect of the design. There is very little combat, yet Lara still obtains a sizable arsenal - each weapon with multiple upgrade paths - and many skills on the upgrade tree are combat-focused. It feels like these things are there only because they were in the previous two entries, but they're largely pointless here. When I reached what was clearly the final encounter, I felt like I'd wasted my time upgrading weapons and combat skills.

And Lara's ability to cover herself in mud to hide in plain sight comes into play so rarely it was a waste of time for the devs to even implement it. The game just feels at odds with itself.

I said it multiple times but it's the worst game I've played this year. There were games that I didn't like, but understood why others liked them. Shadow has absolutely no direction. It has more types of guns than enemy encounters plus a million upgrades for no reason at all.

I quite enjoyed it. The tombs were much better than the previous games, but the story wasn't as good.
Was just about to continue my Deadly Obsession playthrough for that last trophy and then play the Forge DLC.

Eh, depends who you ask. The reboot series has just been diet-Uncharted to me and I'm no fan of that series either (excluding the first game).
I was never a fan of the old games but tried the first new one and it felt exactly like Uncharted which I also don't care much for lol. Lara and I will just never be on the same page.

I finished it today. The end was pretty rough, but I liked it. It's not up to par with the previous two which were pretty great, but it's pretty good.

I'm not crazy about puzzles, though, and feel like I've had my fill. I'm debating just deleting it to free up space instead of spending hours updating it over the next seven months to play more tombs. They weren't my favourite part of the game.

I'm most of the way through the game, and I gotta say, I think it might be the best one, or at least better than Rise. Writing is just so much better in this one, and it's mostly because Jonah makes up for the charisma vacuum that is Lara Croft, as well as being the first one to really highlight that she's straight up a bad person. Combat is still weak, but the game makes up for it by basically making it nonexistent. The climbing is more mechanically involved than Uncharted, and the required puzzles are at least better than they've been.

There is barely any combat in this, it feels they listened to the complaints to the previous games and cut down most of the action. You fight maybe 4-5 guys at a time with huge gaps of exploration in between. Problem is for me that non combat gameplay of this reboot isn't very interesting...

The game reminded me of Snake Eater initially with how you crash into the jungle and have to explore and cut through it, the amazing ambient sound, jaguars and so on but unlike a MGS game, you don't have any interesting encounter after the opening and the encounters and exploration parts are very obviously separated to not interfere with each other. This is not a stealth game of course but it sometimes tries to be and hiding in the mud like Rambo looks really cool... it's not really an environmental puzzle game either because what it has is very light... it's not really a third person shooter anymore either because there is barely any shootbang left. Their design directors didn't have a focus. You want to make a great game, you pick one or two things and try to do it the best you can. This game has a splash of many things and it leaves it at just that. I don't really care about going around a town and talk to nameless NPCs in a Tomb Raider, who cares about that?

That 2nd one isn't even actual interactive lighting its just a scripted area right in the beginning . You can't recreate that ever again in the game.

I've been meaning to start this soon. For someone who enjoyed the other two I really think this won't be that bad or maybe slightly worse but it'll still be a good game?

I mean, it's not gonna be Mass Effect Andromeda or Fallout 76 levels of bad surely?

I find the internet particularly this forum highly critical and hyperbole if a game isn't as good as its predecessors. I didn't think Andromeda was anywhere near as bad as people were saying. Sure it wasn't as good as the others but it wasn't crap like some of the reception you saw of it on the internet.

Anyway how many DLC's for this are planned? I don't really like jumping in and out of a game for months on end when there's new dlc etc I'd rather just play it incl. all dlc in one playthrough so I won't forget the controls etc.

Of course not lol. We can argue how well it stacks up to its predecessors, but anyone comparing it to Fallout 76 is talking out their ass. This is a fully functional game, and I can't see how anyone who likes the previous reboot games could be that upset with this one.

I think I'm close to finishing and really enjoying it... But is obviously inferior to the previous one in almost all aspects (Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of my all time favorite games, BTW). Yes, the scenarios are beautiful - specially the open ones - and the audio is superb, but there's something about the pacing and the plot development that just doesn't sit right with me.

Anyway, still liked it and probably go back to it in a few years. This encarnation of Lara continues to be a faovirte character of mine and I hope to see her again in a new game in the future... I hope...

Could be but the graphic is remarkable and after started AC Odyssey at the same time, it seems to see two games of a different generation. Speaking which, very OT but the hell it's happened to the last AC? Black screen and many loading time, graphically raw and it seems almost a downgrade compared Origins. Can't believe of what I see after played the prequel. Maybe because I played the previous in the X ? But I doubt it's just the resolution there .

I don't know graphically seems really mediocre compared Origins. It's clearly the same engine but the lighting and colour appear washed out and bright off compared the previous. Not a looker for my tastes. Weird stuff.

I'm currently playing it on PC. And I'm quite enjoying it. It's more Rise, but with a few cool new tricks. Certainly feels like it's got a worse rep than it deserves.

The graphics look great on PC. I'm running it at 1944p (90% of native 4K) with 2x SMAA, and as you'd expect it's very clean. No dithering. It makes the jungle look real sexy. Nixxes did a bang-up job on this port. With the exception of resolution-scaling only being available in windowed mode. What's even the point in that?

My main graphical concern would be Lara's face in gameplay. It's often lit unfavourably and can look a bit flat. The model and textures used for cutscenes is fantastic though.

I think the game is fun. The stealth mechanics are cool, but I feel like the enemies can notice and track you a bit too well. Which means most encounters start silent, and end with a violent shootout. I like how Lara will transition into stealth-mode naturally, without the need of clicking a button to crouch.

The world and level design is probably the best in the series yet IMO. The hubs are more fleshed out than before, but can feel disorienting. I like how the game is compact, with a lot of optional and interesting areas just around the corner. It's a nice change of pace from the sometimes too open-world games that rule this generation.

The climbing is a bit wonky at times, with some false-positive animations leading to unwanted deaths. Lara, don't turn out from the wall if you can't make the jump, please. But mostly it's okay, and I love how you can choose how visible the hints are.

My main concern, and what drags the game down in my eyes, are the characters. I don't feel any sense of attachment to Jonah or the other friend, as they don't take much part in the adventure. They're just there as checkpoints in the plot, and almost always get conveniently seperated from Lara. And the villians are completely uninteresting. This is something Uncharted does right.
