Lucifer's story is whatever the original writers intended it to be. Fan fiction ain't changing that.

But whatever makes you happy.

And I'm not even going to bother with the "ignorant" comment. (Except to say I'm not bothering with it, lol)
What is Lucifer's story according to the original writers?

Don't know, don't care.

All I know is the loser who got his selfish ass beat down after a failed coup = evil.

That mystic pacifist hippie who let himself get taken and executed = good.

Sauron = evil.
Gandalf = good.

Voldemort = evil.
Neville = good.

Immortan Joe = evil.
Nux = mediocre.

So should Christians sue everyone who uses Christ on a cross?
The Satanic Temple isn't actually associated with satanic beliefs even if the name might suggest it does. They make this clear in other ways. Having their statue in a satanic show may make it seem otherwise and damage their reputation.

So is the temple's contention that people watching Sabrina would see that statue, somehow know already that it has an association with the temple, and thus think the temple is like whatever the show depicts?

Wouldn't that entail already knowing the statue?

This whole thing seems more like it'll actually get more eyes on the temple than if the, ahem, background set object was just left without having attention called to it by them.

Yeah but you ever read (or watched/played, whatever) a story where you felt like the so-called good guy was actually an asshole in the wrong, and/or the villain was in the right? That's basically the Biblical God and Satan for a lot of us.

A lot of people here seem simultaneously angered by and unfamiliar with the Satanic Temple. They're effectively an activist group that uses people's strong negative reactions to the name 'Satan' to protest and/or mess with conservative policies.

Like arguing against anti-abortion laws:

Screenshot-2018-10-31-Satanic-Temple-again-challenges-Missouri-abortion-law-on-religious-grounds.png

And challenging the distribution of religious materials in public schools:

Screenshot-2018-10-31-Satanic-Temple-submits-coloring-book-fact-sheets-for-Orange-school-distribution.png

Or mocking the Westboro Baptist Church and the concept of after-death baptisms:

Screenshot-2018-10-31-Satanists-Turned-the-Founder-of-the-Westboro-Baptist-Church-s-Dead-Mom-Gay.jpg

They even endorsed Rick Scott to try and hurt his chances of re-election:

Also, they are not the Church of Satan. That is a dumber, way less awesome organization with zero connection with TST.

I thought Satan of all biblical figures would be cool with some copyright infringement/cultural appropriation

But eh, satanism is probably an actual thing so I see no reason to fuck them over on this. kinda conflicted on it (satan figure has been used enough and influences anyone enough to the point where I'd say satan itself is anybody's business at this point)

Sure, but that's not really a stretch. Lots of people have incomplete information about the Satanic Temple. The Temple doesn't want this rip-off of their copyright becoming part of people's impression of the Temple.

But the Temple's reasoning isn't really relevant to the validity of copyright infringement claim. They can assert copyright for no reason at all other than that they can. The motivation to break association with the show just explains why they want to fight this instead of, say, granting Netflix a license.

This was one of my favorite things about the show, they went HAM with the Satanism, and actually did it very accurately and respectfully.

The problem is that actual satanism is just a bunch of lame Ayn Rand-esque types, instead of the much more interesting metal album cover type satantism that probably was never even really a thing.

Yeah, that's what I felt when I started to study gnosticism. Come to think of it, gnosticism has a lot in common with the way Satan is described in the Satanic Temple and in Sabrina (even if it's a bit more complicated in the show :p). Like, the snake in the garden of Eden actually saved Eve by encouraging her to obtain knowledge and free will instead of staying a dumb slave forever.

Check the OP or another example in one of the first pages. The issue here is that the show uses a very specific statue design.

Thanks.

I guess it'd be a dick move of them to keep using it, besides being copyright infringement.

This is the Satanic Temple's creed, by the way:
https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/tenets

  • One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
  • The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
  • One's body is inviolable, subject to one's own will alone.
  • The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
  • Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
  • People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
  • Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.
[Edit: beaten!]

I was expecting something much more "evil". This sounds quite reasonable to me. But they have to lose that statue and change the name.

They're Satanists, a religion basically based around doing the exact opposite of the bible, I don't expect fully thought out responses from them.

Because the bible, as we all know, is such a source of rationality in the world, am i right?

Anyway i dont think thats the view of satanists at all. I though they wers atheists looking for attention?

Seeing their official creed I'd say the world would be a hell of a better place if there were more of them and less of the more radicalized monotheists on this planet.

wait I thought these guys were the Church of Satan with these awesome tenets?:

  1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
  2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
  3. When in another's lair, show him respect or else do not go there.
  4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.
  5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
  6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.
  7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
  8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
  9. Do not harm little children.
  10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
  11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

Given the trend of depicting God as an incompetent, bigoted demiurge along the lines of his Old Testament characterization in anime and games I'm kinda surprised there aren't more people itt willing to consider something in opposition to that as being not-inherently-evil by modern standards. YHVH is basically Trump.

I'm only a couple episodes in but I'm kinda disappointed Sabrina seems to just go with the cliche "dark lord" patriarch interpretation of Satan instead of something like MegaTen's Lucifer.

It's actually, in spirit, pretty much what Jesus wanted you to do.

The way it has appropiated Satan is pretty great too, since their principles are actually about empathy and reasoning. It's kind of like the opposite of priests being pedophiles while preaching about good.

The Satanic Temple is not affiliated with the Church of Satan. Personally I prefer the ST's tenets over the CoS's. Most of the CoS's list is fine, but some are petty and hyperbolic (#4 and #11, "destroy them" is just... lol sure, tough guy) or flat-out stupid (#7).

I went to a satanic ritual a few weeks ago just to see what it was all about. All that happened during the ritual is people ate crackers and stomped on a figurine of Jesus who was tied to a cross...

I'm not one for religion in the first place..but at least the imagery was interesting of everyone around.

On Facebook this was a huge deal.

"What if Jesus was mocked the same way that our statue was"

Which I pointed out Southpark and then was banned from their discussion.

Baphomet is a fake goat deity that only exists because the Knights Templar started incorporating elements of Islam into their belief system and some dipwad overhead "Mohammed" as "Baphomet" and suddenly they were being accused of worshipping this goat that doesn't exist in any mythology ever and then 1000 years later Satanists were like o shit the ~~aesthetic of it all and decided to act as though Baphomet was ever a real thing. Yeah plagiarising the statue is shit but "emotional distress" lol cmon brehs

The artists/production designers that worked on the show sure are dumb.
