Fallout 76 can't catch a break. And wow at the performance on the original Xbox One, it's abysmal.

Amazing. I saw that shit before - in DayZ mod, or maybe it was one of the other mods that branched from that one. Possibly Origins. It happened when certain objects spawned somewhere. Probably some issues with the meshes or something like that. Never knew I'd be able to see it one day in a triple A game that just got patched haha.

I feel DF missed an opportunity to create a video that literally had him say "No.", cut to black. Then release the full video 24 hours later.

For the uninitiated, that bug is called a "vertices explosion". It when the vertices (triangles) that make up the model are not properly contained within the mesh and literally explode outwards, creating the bug that we see in this video.

Yep that's what happened to me in NMS. (It also halved my fps when it appeared on screen)

Bethesda deserves all the bad press for this one. Hopefully it will be what drives them to improve upon their shipped products, because they do make lovely games. It just so happens that this game is an even bigger mess than usual, and there's no lovely game behind it that makes this so ridiculous.

Crazy how such a big patch can do so little.

Also makes sense now why they put so little effort in to patch their games. Clearly they haven't put their games together in a way that makes them reasonable to patch.
I think a lot of the patch just replaces large dependencies in the files that are virtually the same but the patch is, as with some games maybe made so that it is put into a folder that overrides the original game data but in truth you have basically duplicate files that fill up the space... OR it's just a huge download that essentially replaces a ton of files with only a fraction of them having any real changes.

I can't believe that once you start shooting, your framerate goes down by 10.

More than 10 actually.

I can't even explain this. How does this even happen, ypu're constantly shooting things. Nobody at one point raised their hand in protest to say this is fundamentally fucked? They probably did, but management was like nope release it. Terrible.

- Frame time spikes galore still present.
- Stutters still present on all consoles despite Bathesda's claim to have fixed it in the patch notes.

If Bethesda didn't have I'd and Arkane to fall back on i'd Be tempted to call this another telltale situation where a company is grasping onto an archaic engine and refusing to change. Just suck it up and use idtech or unreal.

It's not that easy. There is nothing that provides evidence that Unreal...much less IDTech is suited for this sort of game with persistent world. In fact I don't think there is any current engine out there that is designed for this. We haven't even seen IDTech outside of FPS game with small environment.

Admittedly for FO76, they don't have any NPCs with routines and quest branching (which is another whole damn problem in itself). Not to mention they'll have to develop tools for these types of games from scratch if they were to change the engine and then have other developers learn these new tools....so I'm not sure an engine change is the answer. There are 2 options: a) modernise their current engine's infrastructure that already supports the kind of games they make, has the tools they need and are used to...OR b) move to a brand new engine that may or may not support the kind of games they make and develop/learn brand new tools. Considering this I wouldn't be too sure of whether an engine change will fix everything for them. It might even make things worse. Remember how the developers of Andromeda mentioned how difficult it got for them to make an RPG game with branching on a ln engine that was designed for shooters? And this was despite the fact that EA's internal engine tech team is handled by DICE.

It's possible to keep modernising old tech without it hindering you in the present. I mean all the engines that we see from the developers these days can be traced back to 2 generations ago. The problem is unlike those developers Bethesda seemed to not have taken care of old issues that still exist to this day. And while maybe there are some issuesithat can never be fixed due to the tyoe of games they make but I'd still put it more down on Bethesda than the engine itself. In fact imo two of the biggest complaints that people have (aside from performance and bugs) i.e. graphics and animations are things that modders can end up fixing without even having access to the source code. So I fully believe that Bethesda can actually implement proper PBR materials for their assets (so that interiors don't look like shit) and improve animations using this exact same engine since they are more of a content creation issue than engine issue. As no amount of engine change will do anything about an improperly created asset/animation that doesn't look good.

How small was Rage? Keeping in mind it was designed with machines with 512MB of memory in mind.

Whoa, all that data for a small difference in size. What is going on? Did they have to reinstall all the textures to patch something small? Will they have to keep patching this way? Reminds me of Paragon patches, no where near as large but huge 4-6gig updates each week.

Not America
Can someone explain to me WHY they used this engine for this game? I understand why they use it for their mainline games but for all the reasons they use it in those games for all those strengths.. those strengths are NOT available in this game.
So why? they could of used any engine to run this specific game a LOT more better than.. this.

Remember, the engine is not to blame for the individual bugs that are generated as a result of all the engine is made to handle.

This engine allows Bethesda to ensure players have unprecedented levels of interactivity. Which other game allows you to put buckets on the heads of NPCs, collect thousands cheese wheels, blow up hundreds of chickens, carry almost any object via invisible force of will at a distance of 12 inches?

47GB to do almost nothing is just irresponsible! For many people that is a huge chunk of their monthly download cap.

Edit: I'm really fucking mad. Since this is an online game, there's no CHOICE but to get this patch, which the consumer has to cough up the cash for the huge download. All of which DOES NOTHING.

How fucking dare they.

Why did Bethesda decided to launch the game so insanely broken? I still don't understand the logic behind this release.

Holiday season. They probably calculated that the costs of a delay would be greater than the costs of releasing a subpar product during the holiday season (oops!), and pulled the trigger.

Rockstar get a game running at native 4K and this lot can't even get a game that looks like it's 6 years to run half decent. Time to bin the engine Bethesda, otherwise it'll be a slow death for them.

Considering the patch slightly improved the game's performance, they could have waited until today to release this game to somehow reduce the backlash.

Could have built this shit from the ground up, but nooooo.

they aren't, they are building on the existing engine for the new games so expect all the same bugs but prettier
Was afraid of this, well looks like my open world aligence is well and truly with Ubisoft. They have a solid grasp on the tech required to pull them off. By Bethesda but I'll be back for soon and rage 2 as it's got nothing to do with this archaic engine

Bethesda the publisher own 2 studios

one Id studios with the best engine in the business (60fps on all home consoles, 30fps running on switch)

The other studio Bethesda can't even get their game to run smoothly on consoles since the dawn of time and their PC version rely on the community to fix them. I still remember when i first place oblivion on PC, i literally have to tweak the .cfg and .ini files just to get the 'right' settings on my PC config so that it can run properly and not looks like shit.

But you can't do any of that in this game.. you can't even throw a sweet roll on the floor, it's a bag that vanishes after 15 minutes.

The rage engine would of been better..
