Finally got the Wavesplitter last night, needless to say I was quite excited to see it drop. Proceeded to take it into crucible and wrecked in my first match of QP. Then played three comp games; won the first two pretty handily but then got destroyed in the third one which was countdown on Emperor's Respite :/ Oh well, got back up to 1100ish which is where I was before my bad weekend a couple weeks ago.

Although looking into what is the current meta and the likes is a good idea, it'll probably change in two weeks with Black Armoury launching so it may change.
Just enjoy playing through everything you have, but the best way to find this information out would be someone like Datto on YouTube. He's great to watch.
Also, make sure you've done the exotic quests available to you (sleeper, whisper, etc), and EP Shotty has the chance to drop from Escalation Protocol this week too, which is still a top tier weapon.
Honestly, IMO, you should just play the game and use the weapons and armor that you get that you enjoy using.
Auto-rifles are good starter weapons. Easy to use. Hand cannon's and shotguns are the meta in PvP. Pulse rifles, Escalation Protocol Shotgun, and linear fusion rifle are the meta in Gambit for burning bosses and doing invasions or killing invaders.
Sleeper Simulant is a great heavy exotic weapon to use. You get it via a quest on Mercury. Whisper of the Worm is the other OP exotic heavy weapon (sniper) for Boss DPS. You get it via a secret mission on IO that is only available on weekends. Both quests are pretty fun. You may have to do all of the Warmind missions to get access to the Sleeper quest.
The Forsaken exotics are in general very hard to get and super rare drops.
The dreaming city armor drops pretty commonly from dreaming city activities and it gives you bonus damage in dreaming city activities
(forsaken end game location).
This will be very helpful in end game dreaming city Activities. The armor says that it causes you to take bonus damage also on the armor, but that has been tested and you actually don't take any bonus damage.
The only time that "most interesting weapons" comes up is in the end game, and even then since there is no prestige raid then your weapons don't really matter that much. Watching some Datto video's and reading reddit (r/DestinyTheGame/) can help you to get into the game and learn more.
But honestly Destiny is kind of a "comfort food" game that you can pick up and play and you don't need to know anything about all the deep systems until you get into the end game if you are really into it and you want to keep playing at that point.
All weapons and armor are really viable and very usable unless you are trying to do pro Strats on end game activities.

Whoa! Thank you for this very detailed explanation. I still haven't finished Warmind + Forsaken yet, so I'll try to tackle that asap with my friends - I definitely wanna try some of those, especially the sniper rifle

If you don't have a 200k emblem, you're doing it wrong. Go find a group doing a high score run, get 200k and start again. Yes, it matters. And the more people in your group with 200k emblems, the better. 100k emblems minimum. You only need to do the high score once. After that, you can farm heavy weight 0.15x or whatever. Also, unless you're just a collector or need it for some sort of Triumph, I wouldn't bother with this one too much. Nobody uses DFA. It was just barely above average when it came out in Y1 and without Y2 rolls and mod support, you will use it for a day and never touch it again.
Yeah it is an amazing weapon, but that ain't really the problem i'm facing. The problem I have is that people are desperate to reach 2100 before tuesday, which means that right now i'm trying to kill people with a handcannon while they shotgun ape, telesto me or laser tag me to death. It's also aggravated because I seem to only attract countdown, which is hard as fuck to get a reasonable amount of hc kills. Atleast I still have 6 days to do the steps.

Honestly i dunno why bungie added the quest instead of just doing like the claymore and outright giving it to you, it just causes people to play suboptimaly or to just not play the objective. Forsaken is a great expansion but all the asinine rng and bullshit grind definitely put a blemish on it for me.
To say I'm disappointed that Bungie spent years talking about not wanting to influence how people play MP with achievements and whatnot and now they're forcing a handcannon meta is an understatement.
I like Forsaken, but the Ace of Spades and Luna quests are a big mis-step to me.
This reply is funny because...I mean, HoeIsAFarmingTool is pretty much that guy on the team right now. lol. Everyone else is playing to win while he's praying for HC kills (toughest on a 180 IMO because of the lower damage compared to other HCs) and eventually precision kills, presumably regularly getting caught trying to outduel a diving shotgunner with his Trust because for him it's worth the risk. lmao.

The general point you were making remains, though: I really, really dislike the adding of quest line objectives that would not be gained in the natural flow of gameplay. Whether it's Gambit bounties encouraging people to waste supers or rocket launcher ammo on trash mobs or Lunas/NF steps that require you to do something that takes away from playing to win, these objectives tend to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Not because I find these steps or bounties difficult, but because of cases just like this. When making a little progress for a quest step at the expense of winning despite having a team of other players who really wanted to win involved is seen as an acceptable trade-off to the player, the priorities have been warped beyond recognition and should probably be reevaluated by the designers. Fucking over teammates and being indifferent towards winning as long as some progress is being made shouldn't be an acceptable game state.

lol I finally got it. It comes masterworked and I got a Merciless Catalyst along the way. It's really RNG whether you got 100k or not, what matters is the speed you can finish the Nightfall. The last time I got 2 Militia's Birthright dropped at the same time despite me not getting 100k for Lake of Shadows.

I get the point you're trying to say, but I think you're assuming a bit too much about how I play lol. I'm still playing to win, just that I'm focusing more on hc kills than shotgun aping. I'm still climbing in glory.
I know it's tempting to try during the week when all weapons are available, but I feel like that actually hurts your chances of getting the weapon you want.
Personally, I'd try when only the shotty was available.
I guess AFK'ers are just gonna farm Infamy this week. Played 2 games of Gambit yesterday and had 1 dude AFK in the first game and 2 dudes in the second game AFK. Feels great to have 20 total motes banked when the other team has wiped their Primeval.

The rotation is all three weapons, all three weapons, shotgun. You might as well participate in those two weeks. You might get what you're looking for two weeks early.
I have a question regarding tokens (like the ones you receive for PvP for example): is it worth it to keep them or do y'all just give them to the NPCs? I got most of the PvP items for example and don't really see a point in giving Shaxx more tokens

I don't like that these steps do not retroactively award you so it forces you to adjust to this mindset compared to say "hey i have been doing precision kills before the step that requires it so let me continue as if nothing happened".
Are Bungie pushing Countdown in Competitive or is it completely RNG? I've only really started playing comp over the last 2-3 weeks and the vast majority of games I play are Countdown. I don't like Countdown. :(
