I'm not worried at all. I know it's going to be trash in its most absolute form.

Can't say Nintendo has done anything to convince me that they are capable of doing a good delay-based netcode since Mario Strikers Charged, or a good rollback-based netcode since Mario Kart Wii.

But at least it's probably going to be delay-based, so no cheating on that one.

Also, Switch's Wifi just barely works and almost no one is going to actually buy an Ethernet adapter or to even be able to use Ethernet at all (Hi handheld mode), making things that much worse.

I'm not worried. Smash 4's online was mostly good even played an online tournament of maybe over a dozen people and those matches all ran fine too. I've played a ton of For Glory 1v1 too and yeah you get a few laggy matches here and there but the majority is pretty damn good. I have a friend I would play fairly regularly that lives pretty close to me (although not close enough to be able to meet up very often.) and we both agreed the connection felt so close to playing offline.

I think the only thing I'm kind of worried about is how the online is basically you set up search parameters and then you have to hope you get matched up with someone with the same rules or similar rules to you.

I'm expecting it to be terrible. Even with the lan adapter the lag on the Wii U version made it unplayable most of the time.

It'd be s small miracle if it's anywhere close to Splatoon

Eh, Splatoon has the benefit of being a shooter which pretty much guarantees that rollback netcode will be used. Smash should probably switch from a synchronized connection with input lag to client side rollback based netcode to better accommodate 3+ players. It worked wonders for PlayStation All Stars and it's the new standard for pretty much all non-Namco fighting games.

Namco...wait...shit

My friends from my Melee days are all across the country. I think Nintendo has done a miserable job rolling out their online platform, and for this reason, my hype for the game couldn't be lower.

Not that worried, although I have a feeling it'll be bad...Mostly gonna be playing with my close friends locally or with them online using discord for voice chat. I'll buy them all lan adaptors if we need em.

I'm in hopes that since Nintendo is charging for the service, this means that they are talking the online much more seriously than ever. Whether if that will be the case or not will depend on the coming weeks.

It will definitely be a make or break for the game though since if the online doesn't work properly this time around, alot of people may lose interest. The game is going to be a masterpiece, but hopefully the online will be good (even though it is probably going to be fair to say it will stumble at the start... alot...)

It will be predictably half-hearted, as every Nintendo game has been since Nintendo DS Wi-Fi launched in the mid 2000s.

I will only play locally, even waiting until my brother who lives away comes home for Christmas vacation to play with him. I refuse to shell out for Nintendo Online, it's an utterly farcical waste of money.

TBH, even if worst case scenario it sucks... Its still worth buying for the single player and local multi for me personally.
I would love for it to be great tho, and I have fibre internet now so hoping that helps. Smash4 was hit and miss with the online, so I didn't play heaps of that, but overall its still probably my most played game of all time.

The option to play 1v1 on regular stages is enough for me to say it's superior to Wii U's online. I missed the variety, even some items at one point after playing nothing but 1v1 For Glory for months. But I'm not holding my breath for decent 4-player multiplayer (with 4 Switches; 2v2 on the same console respectively is basically as stable as 1v1).

Got the UGREEN USB 3.0 ethernet adapter for Smash by the way. Just tested it and saw that download/upload speed basically stayed the same. On my laptop, it's the quadruple of that amount. I know it's more about the ping anyways, so I'm testing it more when the game comes out.

Me personally? No. I don´t play online at all because it´s not my cup of tea to play against strangers that most of the time behave like trolls and/or little children who´re wasting my time.

Local only for me. I enjoy Smash but I'm more of a casual fan, it's never hooked me like it does some people and competitive online isn't really my thing. I don't do much online gaming anyway and won't pay for Nintendo's bare bones online service. I'd rather keep access to my emulators than have online.

It'll be good enough for my casual online play. The bulk of my time will be sp or local co op anyways.

Usually me and my friends who play smash online all have good connections and have no problem with stuff like that playing against each other.
Not even in Brawl so i don't care.

Now if u are trying to be competitive against strangers yes you should be worried.

I think there'll be a smaller pool of players since it's behind a paywall now. I don't expect the stability to be any different than previous titles to be honest.

In terms of performance no. Smash 4 was always pretty smooth for me.

The lack of a dedicated 1v1 mode does though. I know we can set options to look for that but it's not quite the same.

What are the elite battles in online btw?

Yeah, I'm worried. It's never been great. Thankfully we don't have to pay for onl... oh wait.

Haven't had any issues with their online games on the Switch yet, and that was before I got a USB to ethernet adapter that gave my speed quite a boost. Hoping the 20 bucks a year keeps people with dial up off the damn game.

I tried to play Mario tennis online and both games were horribly laggy. It was my first time using a Nintendo online so it didn't leave a good first impression.

I'm not worried I'm just expecting disappointment as with anything nintendo does online. I hope it doesn't suck.

Smash is a local party game for me so not worried about online sucking (and not planning to pay for it).

I'm not confident in online, but unlike with the last game I'm going to make more of an effort to find local games/tournaments, so bad online isn't a deal breaker for me.

As long as:

1. Nintendo continues to defy all sense and reason and ship a *gaming console* with no option for wired internet ffs, and
2. A large part of gamers honestly believe WiFi is "ok",

The experience will always be mediocre.

ARMS online was pretty good in my experience and coupling that with the matchmaking being region based I'm feeling pretty confident.
I could see some issues at launch though obviously.
