I'm playing OoT right now (for the first time ever). So I enter the castle for the first time, I sneaked near the moat and crawled through small hole and there are two guards just standing. They keep throwing Link outta door. I've read that they stand there during the night. How am I supposed to know that? That's bs (or I missed some clue).

Played this game for the first time on the Gamecube! Amazing game.

No other 3D Zelda game has ever captivated me as much as OOT.

If I remember correctly, go at night and MGS your way around?

The greatest (well MM is my favorite but you need this to get MM) of all time. To me OoT is still the template for what I want from a video game. A game that captures the spirit of exploration but has the design of the best linear games. A game that does not waste the players time, that is paced incredibly well with new gameplay mechanics being introduced constantly in a giant 40 hour adventure. Levels mixed with combat, puzzles, amazing bosses. Mini games that break up the norm allowing for fun diversions. A world where every nook holds something of value.

That's what action adventure games should strive to be. No one has perfected the formula like Zelda has.

Damn, I feel the same. They should be making this a celebration, making interviews with devs, releasing OoT for Switch Online, etc.

For sure. OoT is the closest the industry has come to a universal agreement to greatest game ever made. It has the clout that The Godfather has in movies. The game every one points to as a for sure example of the very best of this medium. This should be a big event.

Liked it enough at the time. Still think it's far from the best Zelda game made and it's certainly far from being the best game ever made. I wouldn't even call it the best or most influential game on the N64, since Super Mario 64 exists. It lead the series in a path that i wasn't a fan of and what problems it did have only continued to get worse in the sequels untill BOTW saved this franchise from the depths of mediocrity.

Wow... seeing this thread made me remember playing this all through Thanksgiving break/weekend when it released. I remember talking to friends on the phone who were also playing it and giving each other hints/help. Would love to be able to play through this in celebration over the next few days and am jealous of those of you who are going to be able to!

"For better or worse"...? Okay.

Anyway, favourite game of all time. Happy birthday to the best thing this industry has given us.

Really can't believe it has been 20 years since OoT released, I still have vivid memories of the months of anticipation leading up to the release and finally being blown the fuck away the night of 11/23/98. I will be doing a 20th anniversary playthrough starting on Friday, I haven't played through OoT since the 3DS version so I'm pretty excited to revisit it. My 100% save file has survived 20 years!

Excuse me, but Mega Man Legends invented Z targeting the year before :P

I still haven't played this game, or any Zelda for that matter. I bought a 3DS this year though so at least now I have a place to do it.
I guess lol.

But...what? You have a 3DS and didn't bother to get the game new for 25 bucks or something? Why would you miss out on that?

I would take a remake of this game in the graphical style of Breath of the Wild. In fact, Nintendo could just reuse most of the assets of that game for the remake and I would be happy.

Because I bought it exclusively to play Monster Hunter and that's what I did.

I intend to pick it up at some point, I swear lol
Ah got it lol. Well, if tehre is one game you should catch up to since you already have to system it's this one, so yeah, do that at some point.
I'm shocked they didn't do anything for its anniversary.

An HD remaster of the 3DS version would have sufficed and sold well in switch but I guess they didn't think it was important enough
Maybe they are working on an actual remake for Switch. I wouldn't have anything against that.

Man 20 years. I still remember wanting to go to the grocery store so I could read the guide in the magazine section and take notes about the water temple.

I guess it's finally time to actually play it to completion for once. Out of all the 3D Zeldas I played, OoT is the only I never finished.

One of the greatest games of all time. Although it's not the best Zelda game for me. ALttP is my favourite, and it probably is my favourite video game.

But yeah, Ocarina is a landmark game. I've played through countless times since launch. I have it all down to memory at this point.

Everyone always complains about the Water Temple. The only thing that really stumped me was the keys. There's one in the central tower, right at the bottom of it that I completely missed back then. You have to raise the water up to access that area, and it took me ages to notice this.

20 years, fuck. I remember getting the game and popping it into my N64 like yesterday.

I also remember destroying my save with a Gameshark.

I used to play it at my cousin's house all the time when we were kids since I didn't have an N64. I never got around to finishing it until I got the 3DS version, which is a great update to the game.

Personally my favourite 3D Zelda game. The OST is also amongst my favourites.

Forever the best game ever, pretty crazy Nintendo managed to released such a gem for its first 3D Zelda.

I finally played it last summer on 3DS. I felt like a few of its dungeons could have been cut, its overworld was a bit inflated to show off big 3D worlds, but still empty mostly, and the camera forced combat to be simple and platforming to be not fun.

That said, looking bad, I'm still really fond of the charm and fun that I did have with the game.

I'm always tempted to replay it.

Oh, the bosses were all so easy that I kept thinking another phase would happen, and then a heart piece would drop to the floor, much to my disappointment.

god i loved this game.

i just think about how games nowadays just spoonfeed you the whole way. rdr2 literally tells you what to do next at every fucking turn of every mission. where is the sense of discovery and figuring things out on your own?

Never finished it when I was a kid. After the Deku Tree, I never got into Hyrule before the night fell and the entrance was closed. Those monsters scared the hell out of me.

Anyways, happy birthday. And let's celebrate with the music of one of the most creepy dungeons in the entire game.

Oh man, the release of this game sticks out so much to me. I remember a couple things in perticular,
it was the very first thing I ever ordered online (from gamestop) because I was nervous about stock. It didn't come when the game released, I remember going over to my freinds house and playing up till the young link temple in Zora's domain, it was such a captiviating experience. We got stuck on a puzzle in that specific temple and we discovered the solution do it discussing it on the walk home from school which was such a cool experience. I remember the mailman finally delivering almost a week later, it was a friday evening and by that point I had lost hope that it would show up in time for the weekend, but sure enough around 5 or 6 PM the mailman shows up and I was elated.

The game is amazing from beginning till the end, it always surprised it me. I remember just feeling so much joy and excitement the first time I explored the starting town, to how alive everything seemed in Hyrule square, to what a pure joy it was to catch a fish that contained a heart piece, finally to a story that was surprisingly captivating with a world that was genuinely interesting to explore with tons of neat surprises hidden around every nook and cranny.

Honestly it's an experience that I don't think any of us will ever get again, it's hard for anyone to understand that wasn't there in that moment. But games like Zelda:TOOT and Mario 64 were filled with so much innovative new ways to play games and experiencing them for the first time when it had never been done before... what an incredibly exciting time.

The remade game on 3ds wasnt too impressive to be honest. But i can see the revolutionary aspect of the game for that time. It just felt a bit rough and outdated, even on the 3ds.

Unfortunately i have missed the N64 and Gamecube days and my judgment would surely differ if i had experienced it at release. I also have to finish OoT, maybe about a third i have reached.

Anyway, congrats. Loving the series.

Such a great game. Even though I love Breath of the Wild it still hasn't replaced this game as my favorite Zelda. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with nostalgia. I still remember when this was released and being amazed by it, then getting it for Christmas that year with an N64 and GoldenEye.

Like a lot of people have mentioned here, the game is super replay-able to me. Its easily one of my most replayed games. I played the 3DS version for the first time last year and still had a great time with it. Once I get through a few more games I may try out the Master Quest mode in that version.

Happy bday OoT!

As someone who played the whole series after 2010 I can't say it's one of my favorites - probably my least favorite 3D Zelda. However it was clearly and accomplishment for its time and set benchmarks for EVERYONE.

It's still incredible how universally praised this game is, to be honest. It's so loved there's even an Item Randomizer for Ocarina of Time that shuffles all the items in the game into chests/NPC rewards/heart pieces and even what dungeons you need to complete to beat the game. Really great for playing the game again but with a fresh experience every time. You never know where you're going to find Hookshot or Bomb Bag!

That said, the game just feels good to play. Link controls really well for a game this old. They're tight, the combat is simple but it feels good to hit enemies and kill them. Knowing advanced stuff like how to use Power Crouch Stab is satisfying. It's kind of like Mario 64 in that way. Most people don't know how good Deku Nuts are until you actually play the game again and again where freezing them in place with the Nuts actually comes in handy when you don't have the Boomerang. It's super weird, haha.

Dungeon design has some rippling issues on replays (Shadow Temple is not very fun to go through after the first time, imo. Super linear). I suppose that's really an issue for most of them. The worst one is definitely Water Temple but I'm also not really a fan of the backtracking you have to do in Forest Temple (really slow) if you don't have Farore's Wind. Just lots of little issues I have with the adult temples.

Still, overall, a really solid and amazing game. You can see its influence in games today.

I remember being a bit sceptic towards OoT at first. I really liked the 2D games and thought that the step to 3D was kinda dumb.
But then I saw a demo of it at some game shop and changed my mind.
Didn't own a N64 though, so I played it at a friends house from time to time, and later borrowed it from him to finish on my own.

Also the ending (boss fight and credits) is still the greatest, most satisfying conclusions to any game I have ever played.

This was the first game I ever pre-ordered. Back then, Babbages didnt even call it preordering, they called it Reserving. I had a pizza party after school for my math class and had a slice or two and ran home. My brother picked it up for me and said he went there in the morning and they hadnt recieved the shipment yet. He went back hours later and got it finally. I got home and called my best friend to come check it out and he was so jealous since he had to wait until Christmas to get his copy. I still remember that day very vividly. It was a day before a half day of school before thanksgiving break. Awesome times. The GOAT

Unfortunately the game is a bit too open and empty for my tastes. You can spend way too many hours wandering around without actually accomplishing anything. I enjoyed how much tighter A Link to the Past was as an experience in its time.

Definitely not a bad game though, don't get me wrong. By no means am I trashing the game.
