Imagine the meltdowns...

Anyway I don't see why they keep releasing these ports on 3DS anymore, they seem to bomb hard. Console is still selling but it looks like people buy it for pokemon, mario kart etc...
Because they've been in developpement since before the Switch released.
Nintendo had to continue to develop games for the 3DS, you never know, Switch could have been a failure, sold like shit, etc.

TGA is in a little bit more than 2 weeks, I didn't realize time was passing so fast (feelsbadman.jpg).
Bayonetta 3 should be there. Emily has mentioned Kamiya recently, the game was announced there last year, so it's a reasonable guess that they will give us an update on the game. If there wasn't the photo of Reggie with the Metroid shirt, I would have guessed that Metroid would have been saved for the next E3, or an early January direct. But we may be looking at a scenario where BOTH Bayonetta and Metroid are shown at TGA. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Uh oh, people are getting self-hyped for a big January direct. January 2017 had a big stream, but it wasn't a direct. This year we didn't have one. I don't expect anything big in January. But maybe that's just because they didn't have anything big to announce?

And I'm laughing at people saying that the VGA should have a bigger announcement than a port. Nintendo is all over the place with VGA announcements. Some years Zelda. Some years nothing. Some years 'Cranky Kong!'

Here, I'll let Arlo explain that you cannot predict Nintendo.

Expecting something big is a mistake. Expecting nothing? Also a mistake. You must be zen, I guess.

It's one year Cranky Kong...which was years ago

On the one hand, years ago when something happens only once a year isn't that long ago.

But, on reflection, the real issue is: what does Nintendo have to announce. People were disappointed with the early directs this year. But that's cause Nintendo didn't have anything HYPE WORTHY to announce. People were hyped January 2017 because Nintendo had a bunch of good products to announce.

So ultimately, it comes down to this: what does Nintendo have that it can announce. They won't go big. Or small. Or anything else. They will announce what they think they can announce. That's why it cannot be predicted. It depends on what will come out in the next 6-13 months. Unlike other companies that will announce things 2 years in advance just to fill the 'big announcement' checkbox.

They announced the Cranky Kong in 2013 and that was a different show.

They can announce and show a Metroid Prime 4 trailer or first footage of Bayonetta 3.

Thank you for putting my questioning to rest! <3

There is no way that main Nintendo announcement on TGA will be port of 5 years old game.
Pfff I wasn't expecting that bad. I know Metroid Prime 4..... will be arriving shortly. I just figured announcing a 5 year old port of an HD remake of a 16ish year old game isn't the best message to convey to your western audience. But I'm okay now! Bring on the January direct!

TheMoon By the way, I wanted to ask. What is your most anticipated Nintendo first party game coming up? Doesn't have to be guaranteed next year of course

January had Mini Direct, it wasn't big but it was quite good packed with plenty of interesting announcements (Dark Souls Remastered, Mario Tennis Aces, DKTF, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition...).
We are definatly getting Direct in January in any case, in worst case we will again have Mini Direct. And offcourse they have staffs to announce, if you look closer you will see than in most cases Nintendo announcing games few months before launch.

Cranky Kong was in 2013. from 2014. Nintendo had very strong presence on TGA that's actually different show.

Talking about Arlo, that's video from 2016. Nintendo with Switch is quite predictable.

Nintendo with Switch is quite predictable.

This history of this thread tells a different story, in a way. First, there are surprise announcements, like Tenis Aces. But you are right: the thing that confuses people is Nintendo has been so predictable that they don't believe it and form all sorts of amazing tales about upcoming massive directs, or something.

People had every right to believe we'd get s general direct coming into 2018. We knew nothing about 2018 and figured Nintendo had big stuff coming which needed a general direct. It happened Nintendo had smaller titles and ports which warrants a Mini Direct.

2019 is a different beast.

Guys what if....they don't show Metroid Prime4...how disappointed would you be? I'm normally someone who refrains from having too lofty expectations to not get disappointed but...Prime 4 is different for some reason. Maybe because it already got announced and I'm just sitting there wondering when on earth they will follow up with some actual footage already.
I'm normally quite reasonable with these things but if Prime4 doesn't show up next month I'll be massively bummed out.

Strangely enough the Prime 4 announcement was also the only game that made me jump out of my seat a bit. Like, I watched the BotW trailers for probably 50 times and more, but nothing made me jump out of my seat except that dumb jpeg lmao.

I wouldn't care.
We know Prime 4 is gonna be shown someday. Personally, I'm in no hurry.

Then again. Im one to rarely have lofty expectations,

I'll be fine. I love high expectations. It's just games so who cares. Everyone gets disappointed in all facets of life. I don't care if I'm disappointed lol. We're disappointed for the day or so and move on.

Eh I'm sure they'll have something fun at TGAs if not Prime 4. Previously unannounced games are cool too.

As a side note, when did it become a thing to call any non-moving thing a JPEG? The Prime 4 tease was certainly not a JPEG, it had 3D models in it (of numbers/letters but still). And people are saying the Spirits in Smash are just JPEGs, when at the very least they are PNGs. Did I miss something?

People have been using it as a derogatory term for the Spirits atleast. Some may not know the actually terminology.

True. Well, maybe when I have an especially shitty day I'll think "Fuck why no Prime 4". I wonder how the reaction on Era would be on the day of the show if it doesn't happen though.

No you didn't miss anything I'm an illiterate when it comes to even the most redundant tech related stuff and just used whatever came to mind. Don't mind me lol.
And yes, I wouldn't mind any unanounced stuff either but...Prime 4 tho...

On a sidenote I really, really liked the sound effects they used on that teaser before the music kicked in.

I sure as hell don't lol. But I also didn't say anything regarding spirits so that's not on me at least. :P

Well any time you have a video of anything it's not a JPEG. A JPEG is a static image file. So the Prime 4 reveal was a video and it had the number 4 as a 3D model, so clearly wasn't just an image.

When it comes to Spirits some of those have alpha transparency, which means they are likely PNG files, rather than JPEGs. From what I understand JPEGs don't contain that alpha information, so they will always be rectangular images without any transparency.

But anyway yeah I really hope we see Prime 4 but even if we don't I'm sure I'll be happy with what we see.

It was the VGX.

I don't think we'll see Prime 4 at the game awards. That reveal strikes me as more of an E3 thing.
No, I don't think its coming in 2019 either.

Vern I know you said you're not doing any inside info, but I have to ask if you think we'll be happy with Metroid Prime 4? Lol

I'm not sure if you've seen or get info second hand.

The one thing Switch in 2018 really lacked was a big game for the first half of the year, Kirby and Mario Tennis is fine and all.. but not major games thus Nintendo didnt really need an early bigger direct but settled for the Mini and the March.

If Nintendo has any plans to release Yoshi or Fire Emblem in the spring as they say, I have to think we're getting a bigger one early. I could see something the opposite in 2019 compared to 2018
Full direct in January, a Mini or two in the spring before E3.. obviously we're going to see the new Pokemon at some point as well.

Unless Nintendo has something bigger planned for the hardcore audience in 2019, I don't think it's good to show up at Game Awards. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't expect anything until E3.
Eh I don't see the problem. Let's show Metroid Prime 4 to the Sony fans, the Microsoft and PC fans. Let's show it to people who probably never pay attention to Nintendo and get their attention.

I never bothered to ask this but how do we know the EPD Group numbers? From interviews? Doesn't this suggest that we have no idea what EPD 3, 5 and 6 are doing? Although I assume one of them is doing NSMBUDX.

Well they already have NSMBU which is bigger than any title Nintendo title this year bar Pokémon and smash by some margin. In terms of the first half of the year I think there is a chance that animal crossing slots in there as well as a big title.

When Zelda WW HD already was hinted, from other left out Wii U games that are not still ported, I definitely expecting:

-Zelda WW/TP HD
-Mario 3D World
-Pikmin 3

More or less all other bigger/stronger games are ported, or other games have much less chance for porting.
Before anyone brings Mario Maker, I think we will have Mario Maker 2 on Switch instead port Wii U game, similar like we got Splatoon 2.

The disappointing thing is that Nintendo EPD's engineering team bragged about building an easy solution to bring over GameCube games, but it doesn't mean much if all it was used for is the occasional Zelda update port.

Could they have a little 'available tonight' surprise up their sleeve for The Game Awards? Just like they did last year with the Zelda DLC. I was thinking Wind Waker HD ready to download on the eShop would be an awesome fit for that, but nah, Nintendo wouldn't make it eShop-only or even make it available there before retail.

In any case, at least two announcements at TGA are a reasonable expectation, going by last year.

That's actually how Wind Waker HD originally released, it released on eShop 2 weeks before it hit retail.

I'm kinda shocked that folks expect a direct so soon. We literally just got a big one for SSB, and nothing's really out until SMB Deluxe. The earliest I'd see a direct would be in late Jan or Feb, so thinking of one for November just seems a bit silly. This isn't even considering The Game Awards
