https://rainbow6.ubisoft.com/siege/...ate-on-the-aesthetic-changes-coming-with-y3s4

On November 2nd, we shared an article detailing the Aesthetic Changes coming with Operation Wind Bastion. Since then, our community and players have raised concerns.

We have spent the last week working on solutions and have decided that we will be reverting all aesthetic changes.

WHEN ARE THESE CHANGES BEING REVERTED IN THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION?
We will begin reverting these changes alongside the launch of Wind Bastion so no player is impacted; we ask you to be patient if some elements remain. We will carefully remove them all to the best of our ability considering the short timeframe and with the lowest impact on the season's launch date and our build stability.

WHY ARE YOU CHANGING STRATEGY NOW?
We have been following the conversation with our community closely over the past couple of weeks, alongside regular discussions with our internal Ubisoft team, and we want to ensure that the experience for all our players, especially those that have been with us from the beginning, remains as true to the original artistic intent as possible.

For anyone not following, these changes were originally done to appease the China market but were implemented in every version of the game. Congrats to Ubi for listening to the community.

This is a huge win for gamers that value a community's voice in GaaS games. Very happy that China's draconian rules will not impact my gaming experience.

They're already warning that this will cause future season delays, but I really don't understand how this kinda thing has THAT much impact.

Can everyone who said "players shouldn't engage in review bombing" please think about your words and deeds.

China's regulations will impact future games, just not this existing game.

Much like how American puritanical regulation regarding adult content has shaped much of the games industry today.

Seems like the best solution for all parties involved. Whenever people say "making a stink doesn't help" you should look at moments like this and valve's paid mods that it can work.

Wasn't there greater issues with the developer focusing on paid features over fixing core issues with the game? I may be mixing up these game controversies, there are so many these days.

I'm actually surprised, looked like they were going with the close ranks and wait tactic.

The R6 team have always done a good job at listening to community feedback though. Not that surprising.

I don't think so.

in the future they'll just make one version from the start, so they won't later piss off consumers by removing anything. loss aversion is real.

Good on Ubisoft/Siege's team and the community first and foremost. This change would've affected Siege for the worse.

Glad to see they realized how stupid it was. I don't care about having to wait a few more weeks if that means no bullshit censorship.

You don't understand how maintaining an extra version of the game adds delays and cost for the dev?

The differences are minimal - pre-placed blood on a few walls on some maps, skull imagery on a few walls on some maps, and icons in the kill feed. The biggest changes are removing gambling references, and there are only 2 maps that need actual geometry removed/changed to accommodate this.

In their original blog post announcing the changes, they claimed that the reason the changes were coming was that so they wouldn't have to test *everything* twice. But... why would they need to do that? Why wouldn't they just heavily test on the global build and have a smaller team on the Chinese one dedicated to testing those few different rooms?

Because you DO need to test everything twice. They are discrete, separate versions of the game. As are the PS4 and Xbox One versions. This basically adds a fourth version. (And PC is already harder to test on because of varied configs than console)

Nah, review bombing is immature bullshit that harassment mobs do.

Filing constructive complaints via email or support ticket sytems, worded and composed like a functioning adult, works. I know because I've organized those before. We got the changes we wanted without gaming Metacritic.

Thank Ubisoft for deciding to do something that you should've done in the first place. I'm sure we'll never hear the end of it from a PR standpoint about how Ubisoft listens.

you and i both they dont actually check e-mails. review bombing/social media works way better because everyone sees it, even non-players.

anyway this is great change, fuck ubisoft for actually trying to bend over backwards for China

I can't praise them because the decision shouldn't have been made in the first place.

Except I've got multiple email campaigns I've been part of that worked.

Also, I don't know why non-players would be looking at reviews of a game they don't play.

Sorry, I just don't see how a few textures on a few walls on a few maps with everything else being built exactly the same means they have to test absolutely everything twice.

Admittedly I'm not in game dev, but that simply seems like a waste of resources.

It's not just textures on walls. It's physical objects in the environments as well.

And no shit it's a waste of resources, that's why they were not going to do it in the first place.

Consumer outcry made them decide now it is worth the resources to shut us up. That's how consumerism works.
Like, I'm happier that it's not censored in those ways, but I would've been completely happy if it were as well and I understand WHY they were doing it. It's not like you have to have a pitchfork and there's a line in the sand. If this were a smaller dev they simply could not have the resources to do it, Ubi DOES, but it doesn't mean there's not a cost in terms of manhours to do so, which DOES impact all of us playing the game. It's just a matter of how much you care about some skulls and slot machines vs slightly less testing time on the part of the devs (or longer patch cycles, simply throwing more employees at the problem doesn't really do a lot for it in most scenarios as you bloat your process).

Is there really no one at these AAA companies that says "yeah but people will react badly" before putting something out to the public?

Or is it more like they know how something is going to be received so do the wrong thing anyway because they can then make players feel important and treasured by backing down to them?
