Honestly after watching this it seemed liked he really glossed over the damage SH4 did to the franchise. It came just a year after SH3, which was acclaimed at the time and well received by the fan base. But SH4 got terrible reviews and sold terribly. If anything can be credited for hurting the series long term, it would be that.

But that is probably obvious. Pointing to SH3 as the culprit is more novel and hey, if you dislike the emphasis on the occult in the series, it makes for a good target.

His point is that SH3 is the beginning of the end. Not that it caused the end of Team Silent. The way it's presented, the dye was cast by the time SH3 suffered from the issues of Konamis pressure.

This is a pretty interesting perspective on when the series began to start its downfall. I didn't know that the original plans for SH3 were more in the vein of a personal horror story like SH2, though 3 definitely has some personal horror mixed in with the cult horror as well. I would've loved to play that version of the game, just because SH2 is my favorite because of the type of horror story it told. The idea that the town draws in these damaged people and morphs into their own personal hell based on their sins always interested me far more than the cult aspects of Silent Hill's history.

That being said, I love the Silent Hill 3 we got. It's still a really great survival horror game with some of the best atmosphere and art direction in the series. Silent Hill 4 is really where the series lost its way for me. It did have some interesting aspects, but it completely went away from the personal horror that could be found in 2 and 3.

I'll always wonder what the series could've been if Konami hadn't given it to Western developers and instead let Team Silent continue to work with it. I also wish we could've seen Kojima's take on the series as well; I feel like it would've been a return to form.

Great work as always from Eyepatch Wolf, but some of his recent videos have been really bumming me out lol.
His video on the Simpsons is great.

I like Super Eyepatch's stuff but he usually talks so slow, like his readings are so heavy. That said, he speaks a lot better in this video so it makes listening a lot better.

I always watched everything at least at 1.5x, saves time and solve issues like this. The only drawback in my case is when watching the Easy Allies live, it feels so slow, I got used to hear them at 1.5x or 2x the normal speed.

Silent Hill Downpour was a really good Silent Hill game, I wish players would overlook the performance issues to notice what a great SH game it was.

It was a definite step in the right direcrion, it's a shame they were never allowed to follow it up. That fucking orphanage section.

It wasn't SH4 that did the damage to the series. The move to next-gen at the time caused a lot of problems for the dev teams at Konami. The work on MGS4 required a lot of manpower, so people on Team Silent were siphoned into MGS4 (you can also see this in the credits). This meant that the rumored SH5 never made it beyond prototype stage (the talk about light and horror as a concept), and instead Konami decided to outsource the IP instead to those with the bandwidth to develop a new title.

Great video, as always. I never connected the mirror comment to the locked room with mirror when I played it, but it makes sense.
I preferred SH3 to SH2 regardless. It was a perfect SH game imo. The visual effects and musics were better, I even thought the story was a little more engaging. Heather was more relatable to me, too.
(SH2 had the best designed monsters though.)

I'm happy to have other horror games taking over because it is difficult to bring back that exact SH atmosphere, moody and dreary, yet believable and the early console janks.
Even P.T didn't feel like a Silent Hill game to me. The approach was completely different.

It really isn't

Hey guys, did you know that in Downpour demon cop cars chase you down in the street.

It's super scary, look at all that rust and barbed wire. Very silent hill.

Shattered Memories is the real overlooked classic among the non-Team Silent games. Brilliant atmosphere and some genuinely clever storytelling, even if the chase sequences were a bit rubbish.

Coming off the thoroughly godawful mess that is Homecoming, Downpour felt like a godsend, despite its flaws.

I know it's polarizing, but I'd put Shattered Memories at the top of the outsourced games. Very very different, but also the most in keeping with the spirit of the series imo.

Completely agree!

What's the issue eith the cop car? Wouln't the barbed wire be kinda symbolic of the razor wire from the prison? Also that a police car is the source of terror for a prison escapee on the run. And what's the isdue with the controls? Bearing in mind SH1-4 have pretty bad controls and camera I didn't notice much wrong with Downpour's.

SH2 (and 1) are just such masterpieces... that anything else pales in comparison.
That said 3 was still a decent chapter to me, the real letdown was 4. Great idea, but bad realization overall.
I quite liked 5 and 6 somehow, but these are not even close to the first games...

I never really liked Shattered Memories. It's not a terrible game, just a very dull one with no real horror elements (no, those awful chase sequences aren't scary, just annoying).

IIRC prior to the events of the game Murphy stole a cop car, so it could be tied to that too.

I do like SH3 but I never really enjoyed it as much as 1 and 2, there's something missing.
SH2 just speaks directly to my soul, the dreamy surreal hellish quality of it.
No matter what, team silent will always have my utmost respect and reverence.

I like SH2 a lot but the main character is completely unlikeable and bland and it has the worst otherworlds.
