I could never for the life of me envision myself spending an afternoon playing stuff like Wii Sports alone. I had fun with these games at other people's places, though, but I would never purchase these games for myself.

With the move to digital, that's probably going to stay that way for a long time.

Why isn't Wii Sports top though? Was it because it was Bundled in?

Also who else bought Wii Play just for the controller and not the game?

MatPiscatella I wonder what this list would like if it were 1 month or even 1 year of release. Maybe none of these would be in there.

I made this list for the first NPD month of exclusive software. It is not totally complete but it should be enlightening regardless :

1/ Halo 3 : 3.3 millions, September 2007
1/ Halo Reach : 3.3 millions, September 2010
3/ Halo 2 : 3.27 millions, November 2004
4/ Halo 4 : 3.2 millions, November 2012
4/ Pokemon Sun/Moon : ~3.2 millions (estimate), November 2016
6/ Super Smash Bros Brawl : 2.7 millions, March 2008
7/ Spiderman : 2.6+ millions, September 2018
8/ Pokemon Black & White : 2.5 millions, March 2008
9/ GTA San Andreas : 2.06 millions, October 2004
10/ God of War : 1.9 millions, April 2018

Note : Pokemon versions are counted here together whereas NPD tracked them separately.

Nintendo knew exactly what they were doing with that bundle, but I don't think that even they could have anticipated the fervor for the Wii in its first three years to have had the results that it did to propel Wii Play to such heights.

I wonder, and i may be phrasing this wrong.

Would the Wii be the console with the biggest disparity between sales? You have the exclusive which sell gangbusters, but were third party games ever that strong? Or 'indie' games?

wait, is that N64 game Super Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64? they combined both names in there.

also, MK8 won't beat MKW. MK8 already got a huge chunk of sales split from it due to the Wii U version and this chart is single versions.

Nintendo is a beast. Any of those Nintendo doomed posts over the years are even funnier now.

Suprised not a single ps exclusive could sneak in there

Dang that is quite the opposite than. Are there no numbers for GTAV? I'd imagine it being #1 actually.

IIRC, the graph that Nintendo released for overall game sales on the Wii painted the split between first- and third-party software sales was something close to 35/65. Third parties did very well on the Wii, but they weren't generally the kind of third party games that got message boards excited, like Carnival Games, Guitar Hero or Just Dance.

I suppose those are some additional reasons why Nintendo really pushed for continuing the Wii naming to the Wii U

Everything on that list is over 7m.

So Mario Kart 64:

From Celine's thread its LTD WW is: 9.87m
To be on this list it did at least 7m in the US.
in Japan, according to famitsu (source; gamedata library) it did
Mario Kart 64 160.363 1.711.661 Nintendo 14/12/1996 (edit, and this may not even include shipped)

9.87 - 7m - 1.711.611 = 1,158,389

So Mario Kart 64 only sold (at most) 1.16 Million copies in all of Europe and ROTW?

is there a mistake in my numbers or a reason for this?

I know N64 was bad in Europe but still

edit:
So it should've been Super Mario 64 and not Kart after all.
figured something was up.

Because this is ranked on dollar sales, Wii Fit is #1 because its ASP was close to $100.

Titles over 10m in unit sales are Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii & New Super Mario Bros. DS

Exclusive software . GTA V was multiplatform from the start. San Andreas was PS2 exclusive for sometime so I gues that is why it's counted on that list (probably not included on the NPD list though as I would imagine San Andreas and Vice City were over 7 million alone on PS2)

How Nintendo never made a 3rd Wii Sports game is baffling to me

Put that on Switch and watch it flyyyy

hm, so it is possible MK64 sold less than #10 but ranked higher because N64 games were very expensive?
IIRC, Nintendo's own games generally hung around the $60 price point at launch, unless it was a situation where it had a pack-in accessory, like Star Fox 64 or Pokemon Stadium. N64 did really poorly in Japan and Europe, so it's not entirely inconceivable that a game like Mario Kart 64 could have overperformed in the US as a result of how much that region carried hardware sales for the system.

That seems believable , Japan And EU+Rotw have roughly the same sales for the N64

ROTW wasn't even a big factor until the PS2. Before that the only consoles that sold in most places were those Fake Genesis and NES clones. "1 million games in one Cart" types lol.
