Every time I check the Detective Pikachu trailer, it's up a couple million more. Right now at 43M.

I suspect it's got a moderate budget, too. So it's probably gonna be one of those hugely profitable movies next year.

Important update:

I found the road safety advert thing ad it's a series of (maybe fake?) PSAs. It's glorious and 100% explains why* Venom is making all that money in China.

So let's celebrate with that classic banger, all together now "balabalahong, balabalahong"

*may not actually explain 100% of the how

Man, Sony is totally gonna be arrogant with Venom success aren't they?

It will probably lead to their downfall somehow.

Sony is going to remove Holland from the MCU.

Shit is lit!

They'll just tell Marvel that Holland will also appear in their own stuff and there's nothing Marvel can do about it.

But I imagine they will get it in writing as a part of the post Far From Home deal. In fact I would surmise that an aspect of the deal will come down to what Sony can and can't do outside of his MCU appearances.

WW was a lock to go down a while ago. Venom outgrossed infinity Wars 2nd Weekend in China (came in slightly under it in USD due to exchange rates) with a much smaller opening. If we're comparing weekends, Venom was only down by a little over 50% where as Infinity War dropped by 70%. Venom is currently at 207M at day 10. Infinity War with much steeper drops still grossed another 58M after the 2nd weekend. Venom will be soaking up FB2 screens and FB2 faltering buffers Venom from the brunt on next weeks releases.

Think about that for a bit :p

Have you already mentioned the "Venom is a great boyfriend" stuff?

The marketing in China is the best. Lucasfilm and WB, take notes.

Venom is going to outgross every DCEU film bar two (and its gonna be nipping right at the heels of WW).

Stop this timeline, I want to get off...

Not only that but it has a reasonable chance to outgross Homecoming. The Spider-Man film that had Tony Stark plastered in nearly all marketing material.

How does this happen?

Venom is doing crazy good.

I went to my cinema yesterday and it was crazily busy due to fantastic beasts

Yeah people are blowing up Widows too much, that movie is dumb to the point Fast and Furious is more coherent at times .

Anyone trying to act like that movie is some sort of prestige piece of cinema are lying to you.

I saw Fantastic Beasts last night.

Didn't care for it. I knew it wasn't going to be like first, but I kind of wish it was. I really enjoyed that movie.

Checking out Widows tonight. Saw Overlord a few nights ago and had a good time with it. Shame about how it's doing.

There's a lot of damn CG in the trailer, that's for sure. I suspect the relative lack of star power might have saved them some money, since you really don't need one with an IP as big as this one, but I wonder by how much.

The incredibly dark lighting design sure as shit helped them save money because of how easy it would be to find cheap spaces and set dress them.

With all the CG I'm thinking just shy of 200M 160-180M? It's also possible that they aren't in the city a ton and it could be cheaper.

Detective Pikachu is from Legendary, so I doubt it was all that cheap.

Yeah. That's the position I was coming from. The biggest name of the cast is Ryan Reynolds and he's just doing voice work as Det Pikachu.

I'd be surprised if it was more than $150m.

Fair. I'm probably way over estimating the cost of CGI these days. I could just see Nintendo being a Jon Hammond 'we spared no expense' (on what matters) kind of partner.

I'm sure that he still broke double digit for this. His voice/Pikachu is key to making the whole thing work and the CGI studios will be the at cost slaves that they always are.

This film is going to be big, and I feel like those involved knew it. With the age of the average gamer continuing to rise, and mobile, games are becoming truely pop cultural.

The movie seems to be taking place on a small enough scale that they wouldn't need a huge budget for it.

It having an equal or larger budget than Jurassic World's $160m (for example) just seems excessive.

I think $90m-$120m would be more appropriate.

Hm I'm probably wrong then. I guess we'll see :p My assumption here is that Nintendo is traditionally very tight on game budgets but there's little chance that they would be cheap when it comes to the first real Nintendo movie ever. With a Mario film in the works, this is not a one off but one of the most serious expansions in the companies history. Legendary makes sense as the partner in this reading because they do not play cheap either. Frankly the CGI looks impeccable, echoing the same bar of quality of Who Roger Rabbit from decades past.

Legendary spent $125M on Skyscraper. They aren't doing Pokemon for less.

I can't see Detective Pikachu costing less than $150m. Even after whatever tax breaks the UK will give them.

According to IMDB, FB2 (like the first) was mastered on a 4K digital intermediate instead of the 2K that most other big effects-heavy movies do. I wonder if that contributed at all to the budget being so high.

Still expressing just how incredible Venom is managing to be this successful! Even as a fan of the MCU, I really don't feel bad for contributing to the films gross. Even with all the bad stuff that surrounds the film, the symbiote itself plus Tom Hardy's absurd performance won me over!

And yeah, seems FB2 has been the most divisive thing in the Wizarding World Series yet. I mean I did watch the first one, but I didn't feel that engaged at all. Guess after Deathly Hallows, I just lost interest in general. FB2 was very much no-watch from me, even before the moment the crew insisted on keeping Johnny Depp anyways.

Double Toasted recently reviewed it and said the plot goes stupid around the second-half. I'm curious to see it just to know why they felt severely disappointed in it.

Haven't listened yet, but is it Martin who said that? Saw it the other day and felt like a movie that wanted to juggle too many balls and dropped them at the end. I left feeling disappointed. One of those flicks I wanted to like, but couldn't.

Fantastic Beasts is like what if they pre-planned five Solo movies. That's fine, but can't expect people to get jazzed about it. At least something like The Hobbit had the preexisting book to build 'prequels' off of...as much as they stretched it to fill three movies.
