I'm fine with this as long as they start shooting the fireworks higher in the air. Can't tell you how many shirts I've had ruined on a humid night by floating flecks of firework debris that stain them poop brown.

Epcot sucks but Illuminations is hardly the reason why.

Gonna throw out the idea that Test Track could actually use some characters now. The new version feels extremely impersonal and lifeless. There's nothing to pull guests through the experience.

Really upset to hear about this. Even though it's clearly been neglected, Epcot is still my favorite Disney park. The concept is exactly the kind of shit that the world needs right now, but at this point I think it's naive to expect Disney in its current state to turn it around.
You're not wrong with that, but the world has become far too shallow to care. Your average person isn't optimistic about the future or interested in expanding their horizons anymore.

I actually just went to Epcot and saw this fireworks show for the first time 2 weeks ago. It was genuinely incredible.

But the park overall felt very old and in need of a serious update. It wasn't old in the sense that things were breaking down or getting rusted. Just old in the sense that it's outdated conceptually.

Epcot feels far FAR more like cultural appropriation than cultural appreciation.

I could see it becoming Cars related, but GM would have to get behind it. I would expect the ride to both go down in quality and have more operational difficulties if those lucrative sponsorship dollars were to go away.

In other Disney related news they pulled out the moving sidewalks from the exit of Space Mountain over in Magic Kingdom and now you have to walk up some ramps to get out.

EDIT: Nevermind, the whole countries paying in thing was actually false. Companies from those countries do still pay sponsorship dollars to be featured. Also, I guess the workers are just put there because they are from those countries as Disney can get away with calling it casting and getting around labor laws in terms of race.

Illuminations is the best. Will be missed. Like so much of EPCOT. Still a lot there that I love but as time goes on it gets harder to find it between all the other junk.

Extremely hot take: Epcot is the worst Disney park, is increasingly poorly-fitted to the rest of the theming of the rest of the parks, and needs a complete overhaul like this to stay competitive.
While epcot is not the most thrilling all the time, I would say you are forgetting the worst of the worst being the Hollywood studios park though I was last there in 2016 so I haven't seen the new toy story land.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and the GOAT attraction Tower of Terror automatically prevent Hollywood Studios from being considered the worst park under any circumstances.

Oh, and the Star Wars stuff too. The stuff that's already there, I mean, not the stuff that hasn't been opened yet.

Hollywood Studios is definitely the worst park if you have young kids. There are only like 3 things they can actually ride with two just opening this summer.

All this hate on epcot makes me sad. Wife and I had so much fun at epcot. Getting drinks at every countries and enjoying their food was a nice break from the other parks.

Test Track uses the same ride system as Radiator Springs in DCA, so its probably a pretty easy overhaul that could be done. RS is also the superior version of the ride.

I'm shocked Test Track hasn't been converted to Cars, yet. There's such a low presence in WDW for Cars given its insane popularity.

And here I thought it was something referring to Illumination Entertainment!

In all seriousness, it's a shame that I will never get to experience some of this stuff up close, as I've still never gone to WDW (and Universal Orlando) myself. Really wanted to try out classic Test Track and OG Journey to Imagination. The Great Movie Ride too!

Yeah as others have said this isn't a hot take. Half the park is out of commission or on life support (poor journey through the imagination). The whole future technology and science pavilion was awesome in the 90s early 2000s but then science progressed too quickly and it was impossible to keep the area relevant. I love the few original vision attractions left, the land ride and the aquarium are awesome, but it's pretty boring for your average parkgoer

I'm pretty bummed about this but as a former CP I got to watch Illuminations every night for free for almost a year.

As much as I adore EPCOT it really, really needs some TLC. Future World is an honest embarrassment and it's like I've been transported to the 80s, the soundtrack doesn't help either.

It's sponsored by GM, so there's no way realistic to convert it to Cars without promoting other brands

Thank god, because Cars does not belong in Epcot...

The sponsorship is an issue, but it's not like they're short on cash, and a themed ride from such a popular franchise would draw more people to Epcot.

I don't see why it doesn't belong. Finding Nemo is already there. And if the ride stays largely the same experience, nobody would say "I really miss all the GM branding!" (nobody worth listening to, at least) and you're going to get a load of kids who are going to enjoy it a hell of a lot more.

So happy I went to Epcot last year before more of this stuff gets swapped out for franchises.

Finding Nemo doesn't belong there either. Living Seas used to be so much cooler *sigh*

As for branding, I agree, but they're generally locked into multi-year, if not a full 10-year sponsorship contract, to my understanding.

All of this happening because they are basically refreshing Epcot for its 40th birthday in 2022. Spaceship Earth will be shutting down for an extensive 2+ year overhaul (let's be honest, the fact that it ends with the era of Garage PC builders, i.e. Jobs and Woz, is really telling of how outdated it is). Future World itself is going to be more or less torn down and rebuilt and the new rides, experiences, and restaurants (Space themed and the new Signature Japanese restaurant) across the park are all being put in to open around the big celebration. They are already expanding the festivals to be nearly back to back so it seems like they are really doubling down on the festivals as that is their money-maker for the park. Imagineering is calling it "Project Gamma". Though the concept art they released in 2017 is already out of date.

I hope that in the rebuilding they don't close "Livin' With the Land", that is still one of the most interesting rides across all the parks. Granted I was one of those kids that loved Epcot growing up and always wanted to go and my parents were always like "Why?" I wanted to be an Imagineer when I was a kid, I don't know what happened along the way that made me stop wanting to pursue that dream. Probably it was because I found out I sucked at math/physics.

Here's an early look at the replacement

Disney pretty much only makes one kind of night show these days: Compilations of classic Disney songs. Ughhhhh

I will trade Illuminations and Test Track for a proper restoration of Journey into Imagination without question. Bring back Dreamfinder in the parks too. As much as I appreciate the work of Eric Idle, what they have now just isn't good.

So now you basically will get the same general jist of the show "Projection, fireworks, and Disney songs" at almost every park (AK still being the outlier, no fireworks to freak the animals out). I see Disney songs working at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, but Epcot just doesn't work even if they try to make it more "All nations of the world" by having the different languages sing the songs. Just like they are having the "story" for the Guardians coaster be that Peter Quill loved Epcot as a kid and because of what the park stands for it would be a great place to introduce the world to the other cultures of the Galaxy. Also, love the guy on the video quietly going "Noooooo." as the video plays.
