we should aim for better than folks who defend youtubers who launch waves of their gamergator fans at women for kicks and clicks, i agree

your words. yongyea, worth defending for calling out issues with the game industry--issues like jessica price, apparently.

I don't know why you're getting upset

You quoted me saying there are things worth discussing in the industry, where my criticism was aimed at people who use RISE UP to dismiss these issues. I was using that in the context of people on Era who use RISE UP whenever anyone, anywhere says "I don't like that X Publisher does this"

In some cases people are yelling at clouds, and in some cases there is legitimate reason for concern. My issue was RISE UP groups these into one and dismisses them all

That wasn't me defending Yong, that was me being critical of people who dismiss any criticism regarding the game industry because it upsets them when people are mean to their favourite corporations

So you were wrong there. I've also said several times I don't like Yong or think he produces much content of value, but if X thing happens that is shitty, and some people point out the thing that is shitty, and one of them is Yong, the fact Yong was one of the people who pointed it out doesn't mean the thing being called out isn't shitty.

I didn't watch Yongs video on Jessica Price, but are you telling me he said she deserves to be harassed and doxed? If not, what did he say that upset you?

I feel like Yong has no opinion of his own, all the content that I've seen from him has basically been talking about other people's opinion.

Additionally when it comes to game engine, development etc he is not knowledgable and yet he would try to pass his guesses (which can be wrong quite often) as facts. Due to the amount of audience he has this ends up spreading no misinformation and misguided hate towards a developer or a certain element of the game. Which is why I don't particularly like to watch him as he doesn't step up his content creation to the level of responsibility it requires due to the exposure he has.

The tweet conversation in question, for those curious about what went down and don't want to watch Yong's video:

"Hey - I'm all for slamming game companies, but my issue with your work is that you often spread misinformation and uninformed theories"

Like how his Destiny 'press sneak' confused people for years with what people were getting for destiny dlc free in the future. Considering how people up to that point knew DLC as the 'expansions' not as 'events' this had repercussions for years on people impressions. Even where Destiny 2 launched people were confused about why there was paid DLC. It all started here. If he had waited for the press release below which is better worded then a lot of this could have been avoided. By then, as the internet works and gaming press does, dozens of articles based off this spread making the misinformation even worse.

https://kotaku.com/sources-destiny-will-get-paid-cosmetic-dlc-and-free-ne-1734800399

Snippets from him in the Kotaku article.

This is all part of a new plan that could start as early as this month, according to two people familiar with Destiny's development. Rather than sell big expansion packs like they did last year, Bungie is planning on giving out quests and missions for free, sources say. This will likely involve big drops every few months until the fall of 2016 but could also include trickles of smaller stuff throughout the year.

"Destiny is getting microtransactions, sources tell us. Don't freak out too much, though: We hear this paid DLC will be limited to cosmetic items like emotes and sparrow skins. And the developers at Bungie will be doling out free content every few months until next fall."

Comments from him in the Kotaku article.

"Ok here's some fun inside baseball. The story behind this story, if you will. So at around 5pm I emailed an Activision PR rep to give them a courtesy heads up that I'd heard from sources about this news — both the cosmetic microtransactions and free DLC. I asked if they'd like to comment and told them we'd be publishing at 8pm. Then I wrote up the story and left the office at 6:25 or so, planning to post it when I got home.

At 6:30ish, as I was walking to the subway, I got a call from Activision saying Bungie would be publishing the microtransaction news on their own. So I turned around and fucking sprinted back to the office. Got on my laptop and hit publish, at pretty much exactly the same time Bungie did. Good times!

I can't fault Bungie for wanting to post their own news, of course. But maybe next time I get a scoop they don't need so much time to comment..."

Snippets from Bungie presser.

https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/13672/7_Introducing-Eververse-Trading-Company

Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we'll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.

EDIT: Commenting on the snippets of mine above I am not in favor of one person over the other. Everyone sees things differently. But it is ironic that one person that jumps the gun constantly is calling someone else out for 'misinformation' which is as best debatable by looking at the Fallout engine thread.

he's made at least four, mate

and if you seriously think someone needs to outright say, 'go fuck up this person' to be responsible for their shitty fanbase doing exactly that, after making four videos targeting her, knowing that they're big with the r/KiA crowd, we have nothing more to say to each other. i got sick of those garbage arguments back in 2014.

if you want someone who actually takes the industry to task for its shite, try jason, or austin walker, or patrick klepek. adults, not screaming children, who expose labour issues, worker exploitation, open bigotry, gamergate pandering and psychologically manipulative game mechanics, making their arguments with reason and care. does anyone ever throw 'gamers rise up' at those people? no, 'cause they're adults and professionals, not screaming kids with a persecution complex.

i'm 'upset' because the folks you're defending fucking hurt people, mate.

I like all those people you recommended, but thanks, and as I explained, I'm not defending him. I even made a post earlier where I'm looking forward to Jason making him looking foolish

Did you participate in the thread on here when she was fired? There was a lot more nuance in what people were actually saying

Personally I don't think she should have been fired, unless she refused to apologise. The company acted too hastily.

I was in the thread were she was fired - that "nuance" you keep saying was from a segment of posters who I see go into pretty much every thread about women's issues with games and downplay them, there's a large segment of forum users who consistently argue against women but do it in a way so they don't get other the line and get banned. Heck, one of the guys I saw argueing that it was right for Price to be fired then later went into the CDPR thread to defend the PR guy not getting fired for his transphobic tweets as they need second chances and said he argued the same thing for Price, when he hadn't. That Jessica Price thread was a dumpster fire of alot of male posters speaking down and over the female posters, argueing to them what was and wasn't "sexism". Do you know how I know that? I was one of the female posters that happened to. Considering I've also had male posters on this forum try to explain how Boobs work to me in "boob physics threads" (It depresses me that this is a thing), I wouldn't necessarily use this forum as a shinning example to point to to refer to minorities issues, especially the gaming side. Being better than other gaming sites is a very low barrier.

I don't think it's worth it for Jason. He's an actual journalist. Yongyea is just trying to pander and incite anger to the lowest of society. His videos are filled with bad information, clips he took from other youtubers, or news from actual news sites. He'll produce several videos for the same controversy and spends the first half of videos going over older information in an attempt to artificially lengthen his videos.

This is right, the artificial lengthening of his video is one of my problems too.
There've been times where he makes a mistake in a video and then makes a new video to correct that mistake and it is the same length with near the same content as the previous video.

I keep forgetting YongYea is ever a 'thing' (I couldn't stand him when MGSV was in development, as he pushed every ridiculous conspiracy known to man regarding the game ), but I may see this just out of curiosity.

Somehow this discussion has just become about whether Yong should be associated with GG, even if you throw that away, the quality of his content is still absolute dog shit, seriously I implore you to go watch a few of his videos back to back.

How is yongyea a gamergater? To me he is just a guy reporting the BS gaming companies do. Never seen a single vídeo of him tthat made me believe he is a gamergater.
Yeah, I'm not seeing people's beef with him. I was actually about to send him an email to see if I could collab with him because he makes good content and I don't see many Asians in the gaming YouTube space.

I know Jason is trying to fight a bigger fight here, that is the clickbait and disinformation culture on YouTube and Yong is a relatively big voice in the field who has a belic behavior towards mostly anything remotely polemic. So I guess Jason sees him as someone that needs to be "ethically corrected" and that can change their behaviour.
But I would much more like a talk between Jason and Jim Sterling.

And for those that don't know, Yong was born in Venezuela. I'm not sure what his political views are, but considering that Venezuelans that emigrate are usually anti anything that can be associated with the left, he may be more of a reactionary because of that. But idk....

Is Schreier specifically aiming for a Youtuber with no journalistic experience and knowledge of how things actually work?

Jim seems like he would be a much more reasonable and informed person to have a discussion with, rather than a pure reactionary like this Yong guy seems to be.
The point is to inform Yong, someone thst talks about a lot of things regarding the game industry that he doesn't actually know about or underatand and spreads the gospel and misinformation to a large audience.

as long as it serves to educate some of his viewers who dont know better i don't see anything wrong with it.

People here constantly just want to ignore, demean, and insult anyone they disagree with.

Jason, a journalist, is trying to show that it's his job to interview and discuss topics with people whose views may not align with his own.

So he's just Jim Sterling 2.0?

Sterling has his rants about similar tired subject matter, but he also reviews and even plays the games in his videos with bits of satire (and even a personality).

Yong will sit there in dead pan and go on about news you've just read somewhere else. No humor, zero emotion, just a bland opinion piece spoken robotically, and then Yooooooongoout!

They're like night and day.

No, I was thinking about something like the BF5 stuff. And again, I not saying he made entire videos ranting about sjw's and women being in the game, I'm fairly sure that he hardly if ever does that to any notable degree. Just that there are things here and there that wouldn't be weird to hear from a gamergater.

I've watched a lot of his videos, he doesn't do that AT ALL. I highly suspect those in this thread who've had the most colorful labels for him have ever watched any of his videos.

People around here throw around gamergater the way his comment section throws around cuck.
