I agree with Uncharted 4 / Lost Legacy being a great third person shooter, but I'm not feeling it in RDR2. Aim Assist so so goddamn strong you cant really freely shoot anything on your own. And turning Aim Assist off results in tanky, unresponsive controls.

Uncharted 4 as a reference point, yikes

Mafia games have always had great shooting. So much fun.

Mafia 3 played so well, had an amazing story. Too bad the game's structure itself was so flawed and repetitive.

Hahaha wow, some opinions on Era are totally nuts, most satisfying shooting, really?

The controls and gameplay are the worst part of the game, and by far, Arthur controls like a fkn tank and when he is riding a horse it is even worse. The shooting it's laughable with aim assist and impossible without it, it's kind of a mess.

I'm sorry but the shooting in RDR2 (third person) is some of the most tedious I have experienced in gaming. The atmosphere and scope of the game are undeniable but the shooting gameplay is not in any way exemplary...and yes I have tweaked the controls. Nice try though.

I should've added 3rd person shooters, there are FPS with better shooting (too bad Destiny and Borderlands are first person). But when it comes to TPS:
1. MGS5
2. RDR2
3. UC4

You should try Max Payne 3.
I'd put The Last of Us above RDR2 (to compare similar weapons - single-shot pistols, rifles and shotguns)
I'd put Mafia 3 above RDR2 (a game that also had open-world obligations)
I'd put Watch Dogs 1 above RDR2 (same as above).

I think I would put Red Dead Redemption 1 above RDR2, also, for a more consistent impact to weapons and better basic controls.

Comparing it to other TPS's I've played, including Gears of War, Max Payne, Dead Space, Resi 4, later Mass Effect, The Division, MGSV, G.R.A.W, Hitman, Vanquish, even The Last of Us... I would say Red Dead 2 feels really poor, especially considering the budget and time they had.

I'd agree that the impact is there, people drop in a very realistic and satisfying way after taking a bullet. But the cover system and aiming just feel cheap to me. I always feel like I'm wrestling against the game rather than being able to actually do what I intended.

Seems like many people don't know that most console games have aim assist and lock on. Even multiplayer games. Even Overwatch has an aggressive lock-on.

The only game without aim assist whatsoever that I can think of is Rainbow Six Siege.

Uncharted I can understand, really enjoyed the shooting in that myself and put in nearly a 1000h in the multiplayer because of it.

Red dead? Not so much. I've never struggled with a game as much.

Imo, The Last of Us was what RDR2's shooting tried to be: weighty, "realistic", and gory but TLOU character movement felt better and the A.I. was more fun to fight. Also, TLOU's melee >>> RDR2 melee. It was so seamless (even if it did look unrealistic).

People like agressive aim assist that makes killing automatic and R* throws in a cinematic camera to make them feel badass.

This is an insult to games that really have Amazing shooting.

I have plenty of unpopular opinions myself, but I have to admit this feels like a response thread and a little forced.

The shooting isn't the best ever. But it's certainly not horrible.

That said, the input lag in general is a problem.

Free aim made a world of difference for me. Double tapping L1 to spin the revolver never gets old. It truly is all about the reload! Feels like I'm in Sergio Leone Western film. It's crazy... RDR2 is already my favourite game of the year.

Who else called their horse Blondie?

Edit: this reminds me... wish we had a remaster of Max Payne 3. The shootouts in that game are some of the best (the airport being the highlight because of the music).

Audiovisually satisfying but the aiming makes me want to smash the controller through the TV.

Yep. I've never spent so long adjusting aiming settings in a game

The shooting is so difficult. I've adjusted the controls but it is still so awkward to aim. They really fucked it up and i don't see how you can compare it to uncharted 4
Are you all playing on XB1?

I only ask because I recall seeing someone who owned both versions of the game say that the aiming on the XB1 version felt way worse.

I enjoyed RDR2 but I can't agree with this at all. I thought the gun play was the weakest part of the game. It was serviceable but that's about it. By the end of the game I was so bored with shootouts that each one felt like a chore.

For me the game feels like it's an on rails shooter with an aimbot sometimes. It looks and sounds satisfying, but it plays like shit compared to their own Max Payne 3.

I can't imagine the aiming feeling worse tbh, and I configured the game options (Ps4 Pro) to have the "best experience". It's awful though, and the input lag in this game is crazy, making every action during tense situations a pain.

Did you turn off the lock on aiming? It's not really a good idea in Rockstar games.

They don't make good shooting mechanics, which is why they default to the lock on system.

Rdr 2 is the Perfect example of a Game that looks jawdropping, pushes genre as well as technical boundaries, has a super ambitious open world design but just isn't any fun to play.

The core mechanics are just bad and don't feel any fun. Moving your character through space, picking things up, interacting with npcs, aiming and shooting are implemented so badly it makes you wonder if they even had a gameplay designer.

The game is great and all but as a game it fails in the category "gameplay".

Have stopped playing the game solely because of how it feels. Very disappointing as everything else about the game I was enjoying.

I don't think anyone is saying that this game has aim assist and others don't. Everyone is well aware that console games have aim assists. But this game has hard lock on and we don't have that in shooting games these days, that kind of aiming in shooting games died since the emergence of dual analogue movement yet you can't play a R* game without it (Max Payne 3 being the exception and maybe GTAV to some extent). When a 2018 game has to rely on hard lock on mechanic because free aim is so bad in the game that you can't consistently shoot a moving target without using dead eye...that's when the issue starts.

Is this really a thing? Because, I can confidentially say that aiming has more going on than just the Deadzones and Acceleration. It reminds me of Halo 5's horrible aim, which feels like you are dragging your aim through the mud. No setting in this game can compensate for that for me.

It just feels awful and like nothing that I'm used to from other games. Hope they actually fix this, because RDR2 will probably be an awful experience with this sort of aim system.

This, it feels really bad compared to how other aspects from the game are really polished. But all the gameplay in this game is subpar tbh.

Is this a joke thread?
RDR2 shooting mechanics are quite mediocre. They work and don't get in the way but that's it.

It has incredible weapon sounds, hit reactions, and cover destruction, but the aiming is not ideal and Arthur feels a little too stiff during shootouts. If he were more mobile and snappy then it would be excellent, but as it stands I'd say it's generally good but also frequently frustrating.

At this point I'm anticipating a thread claiming RDR's driving physics are the best in the biz.

The hyperbole surrounding this game is through the roof.

The shooting is garbage. Utter and complete garbage.

As someone who tweaked their controls and played the entire game with free aim and no aim assist, I'll never understand all the complaints about how bad the shooting/combat is.

I really believe it's great (once you get the controls setup correctly).

Thread backfire?

I don't know, OP. I haven't played the game. RDR2 is a game I'll gladly pass on as long as there are other games to play. Zero interest in anything Rockstar puts out. But there have been some games with really satisfying shooting mechanics these past few years. DOOM, for example. Siege. Destiny 2. Titanfall 2. Superhot, if you want some slow-mo in your shooting.

If Uncharted 4 is anything like Uncharted 1-3 (which I did play and even Platinumed), then I wouldn't agree with that one either.

At this point I'm anticipating a thread claiming RDR's driving physics are the best in the biz.

The hyperbole surrounding this game is through the roof.

That's one of the main reasons I'm skipping this game. So much hype has the exact opposite effect on me. It deflates any interest I may have in a game.
