Having FB lean so hard into nostalgia and hardcore fans was a bad move imo.

Part of the reason the first one worked was because of how disconnected it felt from the main Potter story outside of some minor references.

Which is a bit of a reverse. I remember people thought Beasts 1 would stumble because it had very few familiar references to main story.

Unless this has an uptick from 1, I expect the next FB to be the last. They announced 5, but I don't think they want to JL' FB

An uptick is already out the window. Deadline's '14% higher than FB1 in like-for-like territories' line for the overseas gross as of Friday is very misleading. The Wed+Thurs overseas for FB2 was 29% higher than that of FB1. The Friday gross (ignoring China which opened in weekend #2 for FB1) is only 3% higher. As of Sunday, it will probably be behind already internationally without China. And weekend #1 for FB2 in China is going to be lower than weekend #1 for FB1.

FB2 simultaneously had way too much going on but also barely anything happened. I was very confused for most of the runtime.

It felt like an adaptation of a book that doesn't exist.

What are your calculation for it to reach 900M?

US: 215M
China: 270M
ROW-China-US: 370M

Grand Total: 855M

Only market in which it still have any chance to grow is China.. But even if it hits 300M in China it will be 885M...

No worries. I can share some data when I get home late tonight, but I might wait until we get early Sunday numbers. Happy to share!

Hint: I baked in a pretty big error into a recent post that explained why just slightly over 800M was unrealistic. It under sold projections. Try to find it :P

Went and saw FB just a bit ago

Honestly I really enjoyed it as a fan of the franchise. There is no doubt it was messy. For one there is WAY too many storylines going on for one movie and a lot of the scenes felt rushed or disjointed because of it.

But I really like what they are setting up with the story and Depp was a lot better than I expected.

I saw Bohémien rhapsody. It was as though they transformed key events from an anotation into moving picture; telling things, showing some, but never allowing you to grasp or feel the process of point A to point B; as forces that drive the story or pathos you want are presented in surface readings. The entirety of the movie plays in backstory; Coles Notes as it rushes you to what it considers its actual reason to justify existing: the recreation of LiveAid.

It connects (especially one or two moments) through the journey and merit of its source, but they play with history to hit timings in a stock formula. To the disservice of and in spite of good performances, this devision makes the things that are there to be cared for comes off as contrived. The final 20 minutes are electrifying, but why wouldn't they be. The performances can't reach the same heights, why would you expect them to?

Foremost it's something that will play well to people that are fans of Queen before they are fans of film. Not as much a movie as it is celebration through summation.

6/10

Just got out of Bohemien Rhapsody. Boy, that wasn't a great movie. But, it was packed. Whole theater was, really, not just our showing.

More of you should see Widows. If you were wondering why Steve McQueen would make an action revenge/heist film, the answer is that he didn't really make a traditional one. Pretty great acting from the large majority of the cast.

Just noticed that Detective Pikachu's trailer views on its official YouTube channel have passed Black Panther's 1st trailer (the Revolution Will Not Be Televised one) views on the Marvel channel. That's kind of an interesting metric, considering how Black Panther did.

I don't think it'll be that big. But I can see Detective Pikachu do at least 3x Solo: A Star Wars Story.

What will Detective Pikachu do in the unit of Justice Leagues? 2 Justice Leagues? 3 Justice Leagues?

Y'all clueless if you think Pikachu can somehow beat every single Pixar film worldwide.

Incredibles 2 teaser had about 113 million views in the first 24hr . Pikachu wasn't even half of that .

Obviously there is a lot of exaggeration and hyperbole going around but I don't think many people actually expect Detective Pikachu to easily gross 1 billion WW. Having said that I do see it being quite successful and it may pave the way for future movies from the franchise.

Over 800 million worldwide is guaranteed :)

Domestic: 210 million
China: 207 million

China will easily beat the USA in that regard ;)

Guess we can count an R rated Venom vs Carnage sequel goodbye.

No way Sony wants to take the chance to possibly make LESS money with the inevitable sequel.

China Update: Venom had a better 2nd weekend than Infinity War in local currency the exchange rates are why in came in slightly under. Venom did 51.2M over the weekend in China against the 54.1M of IW.

Using BOM for IW and JWFK and Venoms opening and Gavins stuff for Venom (there exists minor variance between trackers due to fluctuating exchange rates)

Venom 3-Day
Saturday
Friday $12.29M / $165.94M
Saturday - $23.14M / $189.03M
Sunday $15.67M / $204.72M

Opening Weekend including Thursday previews and midnights
Infinity War $200.5M
Venom $110.3M (other places report 111M, but BOM say 110.3M?)
Jurrasic World FK

2nd Weekends with weekend over weekend drop from opening
IW 54.1M -71.7%
Venom 51.2M -53.5%
Jurassic World FK 34.1M -69.4%

10 Day Total
Infinity War 301.4M
Venom 205.5M
Jurassic World FK 203.6M

Lifetime
Infinity War 359.5M (+58.1M)
Jurassic World FK 260. M (+57.6M)

EDIT:
I'm not sure if Gavin rounds, he might just chop off all the other digits. That would explain why he's slightly lower than BOR for the weekend (51.1M v 51.2) and the total (204.72M v 207.1M). I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Noobie, I'll make that post now my dude. I'll save it for the next thread though. :)
