Does the game get remotely more challenging? Playing the first few hours co-op with my partner it feels like we're just sat pressing one button and moving in between. 9/10 battles are first round finishes. I know Pokemon was never crazy challenging but it feels like we barely even have to care about any kind of strategy whatsoever.
Pokemon is self imposed challenge, this game leans into that.

Don't use the Godly partner pokemon they give you and swap your team often so you aren't overleveled (actually lots of fun). It will still be 2v1 but at least you'll be able to play a bit, like someone use a support move with Leer and the other attack.

Also keep in mind you are getting more exp from catching pokemon in co op, which is also the biggest source of xp in the game.

Now the question becomes, can you use the NES controller when they release next month? i think I'll wait until I know that answer.

Co-op makes it a cakewalk. The first few hours are particularly easy. Best way to increase challenge is to use Set mode, box your starter, rotate your team often, and only catch what you need.

We'll have to give it a shot. Might be tough to persuade my partner to get rid of Eevee haha. Can you still have it on your head?

Yep! I also have a hard time boxing my partner, this is the first game where I felt ok, cuz they're still hangin! Oh yeah, and set mode, like the other poster said, so you aren't also literally psychic and able to switch pokemon before your opponent every time on top of everything else.

I've been tucked up ill on my sofa for the last two days, managed to get 16 hours in and sleep too.

Game is soo chill, dropped pikachu out of my party around level 25 due to being to OP and have just been rolling around with a party I wouldn't usually use.

Ivysaur, Drowzee, Krabby, Growlithe, Paras, Hunter.

Holding off on their evos so I don't have to wait forever for movesets.

I love that I'm using pokemon I wouldn't normally get to, and this is the best part of the introduction of the exp share system since XY. You can catch and train lots of Pokemon throughout the game, and not have to grind. I do wish for the sake of those who want the option you could turn it off though, like many of the other things.

It's due to learn fire spin, which isn't that great. If you want a better fire move the TM for Fire Punch is on Route 15 and the TM for Flamethrower is in the 10th floor of the Sliph Co.
Thanks! I'm going for a special attacker Charizard so I'm gonna hold out for Flamethrower. I managed to get through Erika's team with Chameleon and Pidgeotto as backup.

Any tips for leveling underleveled mons?
My party was around level 40 but I decided to switch 2 members for better coverage, but those two are around level 15. They'll take foreverer to catch up since exp.all increases everyone's exp, so I feel like I'm missing something.

People complaining about the controls are crazy.
It's so liberating to have one hand free.

The pokeball throw needed a bit of tuning.

7 hours!!?

I did it for an hour or so before giving up with a Bold nature

Yeah but atleast I have peace of mind of knowing I can use it in competitive play after our journey together. I don't believe in using a Pokémon during the main story if I can't use it in competitive play. I've been like that since gen 1 and gen 2 when majority of the time I was just using those Pokémon in Stadium and Stadium 2.

In a nutshell, I've accomplished nothing and it was worth it.

I was SHOOK when you-know-who appeared after Pewter Gym. That was a surprise!

I just beat Misty and I'm really enjoying this game. I would prefer to never going back to battling wild Pokémon to weaken and catch them. The new system is so much more fun.

Is this worth picking up for a lifetime fan of the core games? I really want to get it but it looks way to dumbed down and easy.

The catching mechanics don't have to be the same as this game, but for the love of god make them a different mechanic from trainer battles. Pokemon has a serious variety problem with it's core gameplay loop. Yes, the games have tons of side content, but for a game about catching and fighting pokemon, the basics have remained alarmingly consistent over the last 20 years.

Altering the catching mechanics shows how you can add to the core gameplay loop without throwing away tradition and (in theory) the competitive scene that's been built up around those original mechanics.

Ehh... I've never really felt like Pokemon has a gameplay loop problem so we're going to have to disagree there, I think it has been pretty standard JRPG fare. That said I fully welcome added variety, and if they want to keep Go-style catching in future games I'm fine with that... as an option. (I really do miss wild battles, especially when trainer availability hasn't been re-balanced to alleviate this removal.)

Really though, that post you quoted was mostly a complaint about the controls, which I think are incredibly unintuitive, especially when docked. I actually play a lot of mobile Go, and that stuff feels so much better in the mobile game as far as I'm concerned. I can't help but constantly compare the two.

Having a hard time picking an actual team.

Pikachu
Nidoking or Rhydon
Gyarados or Blastoise
Charizard? Vileplume? Venusaur? Exeggutor I would get way too late it seems.
Hypno or Alakazam?

Pretty sure I'm going to swap Nidoking out for Rhydon when I can get a Rhyhorn. The combo of good water type and Pikachu renders a grass type almost useless. Vileplume does have poison and fairy type moves in it's level up list though which is nice. Psychic is almost required for gen 1 with all the poison types everywhere. I have seen Koga's gym and it looks painful.

That leaves me with two open spaces. Fighting type? Are steel and ice much of a threat? Ghost type? I love Gengar but they are half poison too which stinks. Also considering Scyther since he was always one of my favorites. Wonder what that movepool looks like.

I must admit, I can't believe how much I'm loving this game. I haven't enjoyed Pokemon this much since Gen V.

Stuff I'm loving:

  • Overworld Pokemon
  • The personality of the companion Pokemon, both the mascots, and the party Pokemon
  • Catching mechanic and chaining
  • Gym requirements. Many seem to hate this but it helps slow the game and let you actually experience the main part of Pokemon, catching Pokemon. Also it appears that Gym Leaders scale their levels making it more challenging.
  • Candies, replacing all the EV training stuff.
  • Shiny hunting is more interesting.
  • Nature grinding fixed.

Yeah, there's are annoyances like the putrid online system. But I feel GameFreak has addressed stuff that we've been complaining for a while.

Is it weird that me and my fiance are enjoying this game more than the traditional Pokemon games??

Because I thought I would hate the changes.... but I don't.

I've been playing since Red and Blue and I'm having fun with it. It's definitely easy, but so is every other Pokemon game. I'm finding it's very easy to overlevel my team in this, but thanks to on-the fly switching (no need to run to a PC anymore) I'm combating that by switching out my Pokemon pretty often.

I've never had any interest in the competitive side of Pokemon though, so I have no clue (and couldn't care less) about how that aspect of the game is in this one.

Same. I didn't think I would hate it the changes, but I thought it would be another Yellow remake, but they really changed a lot of stuff for the good.

I did the same recently. It really sucks. There's no efficient way to do it, apparently. In the traditional games you can prioritize Pokemon to receive XP. No such option here.

The difficulty concerns were a bit overblown in hindsight. Seasoned players always kinda had to limit themselves to get a comfortable amount of challenge and if you properly do that here it feels pretty similar.

Like rock tunnel was downright brutal for me

I think is difficulty is fine. Don't use Evoli/Pikachu and don't grind by capturing the same pokemon over and over again.

The game is fantastic and as addictive as I remember it.

I took Eevee out of my party, and the game actually became challenging. Also mainly did that cause Eevee is now 10 levels over leveled due to walking him. lol

Is seismic toss region coded? Just noticed that when the move was done to me it straight up looked like it was coming from where i live. If so, neat pokeworld breaking immersion.

I think it's way too easy to overlevel in this, I don't get why they out the option to disable exp. share as it would have made my life much easier in that regard.

But at least the portable box makes it easy enough to rotate teams in this, so that's been helpful.

I don't have these games yet, but, theoretically, since there is no wild battling and all you do is catch Pokemon, couldn't you put all the level 40 Pokemon in the PC and then just roam the lands with the underleveled Pokemon until they catch up?

Textures and polygons are very basic, plus the game looks too clean and lacks personality, so I can see what people mean, not to mention the shadows. I've been playing docked exclusively though, I guess handheld mode does a better job at masking these issues.

Probably, even with elements being basic I feel the overall style is really clean and works well. Colours pop and everything is quite charming. Not going to take home any awards but it's pleasant to look at and explore within.
