Welp. China is being China, and $300M for Venom there is now on the table. All hail the potential third highest grossing solo hero worldwide I guess.
Venom also stayed ahead of Fantastic Beasts 2 on Friday, which is getting poor user scores in China.
Edit: Maoyan's projected Saturday for Venom would put the weekend a bit over Gavin's $50M high end. We shall see tomorrow.

It is not performing like any of the previous superhero films there. Both in terms of size and legs. Superhero runs are typically very predictable in China. But I guess Venom is their new GOAT.
I'm not sure how. Carnage is an arguably cheesier character and I can't see how they wouldn't lean heavily into that.

If Venom passes Spider-Man 3, it would be the highest grossing superhero film outside of the MCU and Dark Knight duo. Ahead of everything else from Sony, Fox, and the DCEU. Also ahead of 14 of the 20 MCU films.

That could make a pretty cool trilogy actually.

Homecoming is falling. What Venom did in the second week would be good for any CBMs openening.
We had pretty good indicators with its 10–11% drops after the Opening, I feel like everyone kind of slept on the highest user reviews of any CBM ever. We discard that kind of stuff elsewhere but it's a very important metric on China considering their social media integration.
FB2 got a 7.8 in China and most films of its type with that score don't cross 1.6 multiplier.

You won't know this weekend. But this weekend in China seems to be high enough to keep it on the table.
I think reaching original Spider-Man (~820M) numbers are the only reasonable expectations from Venom now, because apart from China, Venom does not have any other territory left to make an earning. So with current sales of ~720M it can only add another ~100M before the Venom run ends.. expecting Venom to add another 150M+ in china on top of existing ~150M are crazy high expectations.
Aside from Black Panther, possibly the biggest solo hero movie origin. Who knew China loved Venom this much. They let the devil in venomvenomvenomvenom.
Where are we expecting Fantastic Beasts to fall this weekend after its Thursday night previews?
Venom is actually at 733, including Day 7-8 from China. Probably a bit higher with other markets that are 'ahead' but haven't yet been counted. The international and Domestic market are good for another 15-20M.
That would put Venom at 753M. Maybe slightly less due to the other markets not reaching 20M combined.
Remember, JW2 did 261M lifetime in China. Venom has surpassed it at the same point in time, even with a worse exchange rate. This is because its holds have been so strong.

It is projected to do around 55m this weekend, take out the Friday Day 8 (12.86m) and you've got 42.14M added to 166.26M.

This would put Venom at 792M with the entire rest of China its run after day 10 still to come. The important note here is that the relative performance gap between the two is increasing not decreasing.
Even if Venom was flat with JW2 (which it isn't), that would still carry it to 266M and 849M WW.
Essential meaning that Venom has to earn another 31m on top of what JW2 did from that point to beat it.
Keeping in mind that Venom will out perform JW2 by around 15-20M this weekend, or around 30% of its total weekend gross.
There is no competition going into the next week, and Venom is going to recapture screens from FB2 due to its weak showing and WOM.
Spider-Man Homecoming is falling, Venom could crack 900M. Its holds are reflective of its incredibly high user score and it continuously beats tracking, showing that walk in are extremely healthy (an often underlooked aspect of projecting films).
I was tempted to invoke my Black Panther cred a week ago, but was too gun shy. Book it. Homecoming is falling.

I still remember the thread where someone pitched the idea that Sony needed to sell the full rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel in exchange for being able to make CGI films of Marvel Characters.
"Everybody wins and we're not subjected to another butchered marvel character."
And then a poster who literally said
"After we heard about a Kraven movie it's clear that Marvel needs to do something fast. They need to negotiate a new deal with Sony whereby Sony isn't allowed to make any live action Spider-Man related films."
It's the most likely outcome. 270M in China is nearly locked

Deadline updated their article. The $9.1M for FB included $1.8M from Tuesday's advance fan screenings so Thursday's actual was $7.3M. $70M weekend is current estimate.

Deadline is saying that Friday is 27.5M. 70M for the weekend is pretty optimistic given that number. FB1 was $2M higher on the Friday and was under 75M for the weekend.

Lol I can see Marvel sitting back wondering what gift basket they are going to send Sony to talk about Venom.
Again, I don't see that happening unless the sequel also does well. They'd want to make sure the first movie's performance wasn't a fluke. Sony still has time to run this franchise into the ground before it really gets going
