7 improved on everything good about 4, and had much better actors.
Huh? I get liking one over the other, but, apples and oranges bud. RE7 doesn't improve RE4 things because it doesn't DO RE4 things.

Also those who keep saying moving/shooting made a big difference. Revelations, Revelations 2, and RE2 remake technically let you £move and shoot" but barely at a snails pace. AND the game rewards you heavily for stopping to shoot with increased accuracy.

RE4 is amazing. It's simply one of the most purely enjoyable games ever made.

Not the best ever but a very good game.

I just recently played through it for the very first time on PS4. I have a fear of snakes and that almost made me stop playing it. But the action, puzzles, set pieces and especially the pacing is so good that I pushed on.

Seriously
Even if it wasn't the RE I hoped for back in the days, I love it.. Can't eait to quadrupole dip next year on switch
I cannot wait for the Switch version. I'm betting dollars they add extras to it like they did with Revelations 1-2. Hopefully a costume selector for Ada!

Yep. Waited nearly a year before I got to play it at the end of 2005 while hearing its praises the entire time. Even with the insurmountable hype it lived up to it and then some. Since then I've bought it more times than any other game, and have replayed it just as much.

Solo player qualifier needs to be added to this statement for me to accept it. Also, that Gamecube nipple on the right analog stick was atrocious, tough to play the original on the Gamecube.

Ninja Gaiden Black is the best game ever, but Resident Evil 4 is up there for sure. Great game.

RE4 was a move to a faster paced game that used a new perspective and also moved away from Zombies as the main enemy type to having lots of crazed villagers. There are similarities in how it moved the series in a new direction with a lot of success, and RE4 was a bigger game at the time but on replaying it recently some of it certainly aged weirdly like the abundance of QTEs as well as the script and voice acting being a lot worse than I remembered.

I actually felt some emotion with the RE7 characters by the end, which is more than I can say for anything involving Leons Bizarre Adventure :)

It's on my personal top 10 games of all time. I just don't where to put it among Ocarina of Time, Bloodborne, Metroid Prime, Breath of the Wild, Portal 2, The Last of Us, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Uncharted 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Hollow Knight etc.

(Yes, my top has like.. 20 games.. all tied with each other)

Nah from me, I understand people love it (I could never fathom why - not even the best re) but better than halo, gears or cod multiplayer? Nah.

Not with those controls. I'm not denying it's a great game, I'm saying it feels awkward to play, and that controls are a big enough deal that the best game ever should control in a pleasant intuitive manner.

It's insane to me it's taken this long for a proper handheld version.

This game is up there with doom with so many platforms it's been released on :o

It's a great game, but I think it wears its welcome in a way that isn't true of REmake, which I think is borderline "perfect."

I'm not a fan of the Ganado with machine guns.

I wouldn't call it the best EVER (hello, TW3?)... but I agree that it was among the best if not THE best up to that point when it released. Kinda like MGS had been in 98.

Its up there for sure, top 5 of all time at least, but it still has enough flaws to knock it out of the no.1 spot.

RE4 would be my favourite RE if not for the island section being a huge slog outside of the regenadores fights. It sours the whole experience. And the final boss is the most underwhelming thing I've ever faced;

If it ended at the castle the game would have been god tier

Well that's lovely that RE7 game you the feels but that doesn't make them mechanacally the same. RE7 tried something new, but unlike RE4, it didn't stick. RE4 changed action games forever. RE7 if you'll pardon me saying so, was more an Alien Isolation clone. And I doubt it was even successful enough to influence RE8. The next game will likely not be a first person game.

Don't get me wrong , RE7 is lovely, it just didn't change the face of gaming as we know it. RE4 sure did though :)

You are so wrong. I can assure you that RE8 will be firat person, and it's also very disingenuous to call RE7 an Alien Isolation clone.

But no it didn't change the face of gaming as we know it like RE4 did. But make no mistake about it it has influenced the mainline series going forward and RE8 absolutely will be first person.

It took me until last playthrough to realize the Merchant refills your ammo whenever you upgrade capacity... Meaning you end up getting like three times as many shots with the magnum over the course of a playthrough than you'd find in ammo boxes if you play your cards right.

There's so much to discover in subsequent playthroughs through experimenting with upgrades and different weapons. It's one of the most replayable games I think I've ever played.

Doesn't really matter. Ypu have way more ammo than you need regardless.

Single-handedly ruined the series for a time. No thanks. No zombies just a bunch of crazy people repeating the same thing in Spanish over and over. Lost the RE atmosphere for me.

I mean, I really don't think it will. A few folks on these boards who are in the know so to speak have echoed this sentiment that RE8 will once again be 3rd person.

And I'm sorry to say, that everything RE7 did good, Alien Isolation did better, and first.

Just like RE7 Cloud Version was a failure, so was the first person persoective switch. Great game, but the first person hindered more than helped.

We won't be seeing first person again.

It's up there but personally I think Mario Galaxy, Half Life 2 and BOTW beat it.
Likely in my top 10 though.

Until you get the castle it is...

The castle is the best part of the game! The novistadors, the hedge maze, the chanting cultists, the awesome new weapons you get, the Ashley section, the general decor and art direction, all the bizarre and crazy encounters + the memorable boss fights.

Anyway, RE4 is indeed the best game ever, no contest. Even with its insipid, embarrassing writing and story, the pacing and design is simply unmatched. It feels almost more like an impossible accident than something designed fully as intended.

Try not being patronizing next time. RE4 was influential and one of the best games of its era but I don't feel like it aged well at all.
Alien Isolation also had significantly worse critical response than RE7 fwiw. Still, all of this is just opinions.

Not for me. In fact the worst RE I ever played besides RE5 and RE6, but I respect your opinion.
