Yup.
I thought about this the other day with my idol Ken Levine.
Publishers used to think a name would sell a game, so they were given large budgets and ample creative freedom to work with. But that thinking ended 5-7 years ago when the results didn't match.

Mostly true, but Cory Barlog did us right with GoW

I completely agree with his decision too many people being able to reach you and tell you how game development "works" while you are in the trenches will chip away at you eventually. Going into something different or doing nothing would be best at that point.

There's no denying his hubris, but I never really doubted that his heart was in the right place.

Fucking gamers are the worst sometimes. I don't blame him at all. I wish more developers pushed back to whiny people.

What I would give to never hear Cliffy B, Peter Molyneaux, Dennis Dyack, or Randy Pitchford in headlines again

Hey, at least he didn't leave his employees out in the cold. They got taken care of, and in this day and age that is sadly rare. The guys at bosskey were dedicated to their craft and fun to talk to / work with.

1. That tweet is likely a troll not because it asked for a refund, but because it was seemingly created to @ Bleszinski for a refund and that's it.

2. Bleszinski paying severance for his employees is wonderful, especially in light of companies like Telltale.

3. That does not mean that failing to refund people who put money into a F2P game (that then became paid) that shut down after a year is okay. Bleszinski can certainly do it, but that doesn't make it a good practice. It certainly doesn't help people trust the model, and it is an indicator that maybe people should only pay for items or characters or what have you games that are clear hits (like Fortnite). It plays a part in restricting opportunities for games to come into that space by dampening consumer trust.

4. So, no one is really a good guy or bad guy here. Well, except for Mr. Troll trying to start shit months after Lawbreakers shut down. It is what it is. I don't get the idea that gamers, who you can collectively critique for a lot of things, are somehow bad people for wanting to get value for their dollar. That's not entitlement. On the flip side, I wouldn't critique Bleszinski for choosing to pay his ex-employees. I would in that situation. I would also understand that consumers aren't unreasonable in being disgruntled about the value for their gaming dollar that they got (though I also do understand why Bleszinski would react in such a way about a project that blew up like it did rather than being entirely level-headed in his response).

5. I'm most weirded out by the troll account first and then the secondary complaints about, very generally, gamers who want value for their money that has sort of happened with some posters in this thread. The video game business is anti-consumer a large amount of the time, so it's odd that so many people apologize for it when they're on a board full of consumers of video games, and they are consumers as well!

Gamers love it when game devs fail. They love rubbing that failure in their face. Game devs are the enemies of gamers.

Surprised at the attitude of the original Tweeter. You have dozens of people who pour years of their lives into a product they're passionate about, and when their efforts aren't recognised via decent sales and the team is dissolved, you still feel like you are a victim a year later and deserve 100% of your investment via a purchase back?...

Nah dude. Just eat eat the loss, you bought a game that simply didn't have legs.

Didn't the company go bankrupt?

He likely paid out of pocket.

And if he did, that was big of him. Not many would do that.

I was never particularly a fan of Cliff, but I never felt like the guy had any bad intentions, he always seemed to have his heart in the right place when I heard him speak, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he did as much as he could afford to do right by his team.

He did the right thing.
He shouldn't even need to pay for healthcare and severance package.

A lot of big companies would have just told you to get COBRA and use your 401k saving after going out of business.
He should have walked out with no worries as well.
But nope, he did the right thing and still got shit on.

I hope Cliff learns from this.
Take care of yourself first, keep your wealth and don't share.
Because if you try to take care of other people, they will just shit on you later on.

I've been wondering for a while how rich he really is. Having followed him (and his wife) on Twitter for years they seem to live a pretty lavish lifestyle ( big ass mansion, multiple Lamborghini's, etc) yet he hasn't really been involved with a hit game in years and years.
Tim Sweeney gave out very huge bonuses to Epic's staff on the regular.
I believe Cliff B. also made a ton of money as an early investor in Oculus Rift. When the latter sold to Facebook, he most likely made a significant amount off his initial investment.

Makes sense. He doesn't want to 'go backwards' and be a developer at a big studio again, and he hasn't been able to find success on his own. If he can afford to retire, he should.

.

Severance pay in the circumstances of closing a facility or mass layoffs is actually legally mandated in most states

So he did do the right thing. So long as your definition of right thing is what is required of an employer legally and no more, then vastly misrepresenting what you did to prove a point to an anonymous twitter poster in a bid to appear sympathetic.

and also not giving most, if not ANY of your employees a heads up until you lock the doors on them lol.

The weekly update threads at the old site on Lawbreakers player counts was a fucking embarrassment. It's like people were celebrating a studios demise and people losing jobs. All because he had some harsh things to say about poor little GAF

Yep. Seeing some of the same names responsible for that in here with snarky gloating as well. The entire Lawbreakers situation is a stain on the gaming industry. A great game brought down by a bunch of Youtube clickbaiters and people holding a grudge against a developer because he put gender-neutral bathrooms in his game.

poor CliffyB. He doesn't deserve this, yeah his personality is shitty but he has a passion for making games and it shows.

I fully expect him to return in 5 years

It's so weird that people actually believe any of this

Yeah the snarky gloaters and people who didn't like the game are responsible for the studio closing. Not the guy who actually closed it and told his employees through a public twitter post
