Hi Era.

I recently purchased a PS VR and I'm due to get it in a few days. I decided to get it after seeing Dark1x video on Tetris Effect. I know some say it's just a gimmick and some love it.

I was wondering what are your guys thoughts on it.

I have a few games that support it already such as resident evil 7.

I'm getting it with DOOM VFR and Astro Bot.

I will eventually pick up Tetris Effect and Super hot.

If you guys have any recommendations or experience with the PS VR I would love to hear it.

It was never appealing enough for me to buy one. If I did however, Moss, Astro Bot and Super Hot would be my top 3.

I dunno how active the community is now since I sold my PSVR, but my second favorite game to Moss was Firewall: Zero Hour. Amazing levels of immersion.

PSVR is awesome!

It's not a gimmick.. all you have to do is play RE7 to kill that notion. It's so much other stuff, free stuff, on PSN that's worth checking out as well. Last Guardian VR, Batman,.. even shitty little games you would never buy or play are worth checking out in VR. Have fun bro

First. Congrats on that PS VR purchase! We need a Dancing Anime Girl "You got a PSVR" gif version.

And as for games...
Megaton Rainfall
Bow to Blood
2MD Football
Windlands
Thumper
Creed
Cold Iron
Mortal Blitz
Sprint Vector
Apex Constuct
The Invisible Hours

Those are some that I've played and can vouch for being good. I won't name the most popular because I'm sure the thread will be filled with the most popular games.

Edit: Here we go. Have fun, OP.

I bought one recently. It's pretty cool, and I was super sceptical about VR in general before I used it.
Buy Wipeout. That game in VR is absolutely amazing.

Play Astrobot last -- it'll ruin you for everything else, it's that good. I'm really enjoying The Tetris Effect -- and, some great one's have been mentioned already, so I'll mention a game that gets left out a lot: I Expect You To Die. It's like a spy themed series of escape rooms ... it's a lot of fun.

Also, Keep Talking and No One Explodes is great if you have someone else or other people you want to play with. It's an asymmetric game where the person with the headset disarms a bomb -- and, the other people have to instruct the player on what to do. It's fun.

Superhot to me is the true ultimate killer app on PSVR. I have Astro Bot and it's great, but what I'm really looking for in VR is a level of immersion so intense that I forget I'm in a video game. Superhot is the only game I've played that gets me there.

I've had one since launch. Not going to lie, I haven't used it a ton, but when I do I truly enjoy it.

First games I got we're Batman and Until Dawn's rollercoaster game. Loved both, even though I got motion sick from the coaster.

Thumper is a lot of fun, and makes me think I'd love Beat Saber. I just wish you could do custom tracks.

RE7 was phenomenal, but I stopped playing in VR after a few hours because it was exhausting.

Farpoint was an adventure, but I never finished. Not because of enjoyment, but I'm just bad at game hopping.

Star Trek is fun if you have friends.

Still need to play Moss. Poor guy is just chilling in storage after I moved.

Buying a PS4 pro helped the graphics quality significantly.

You have a fantastic game, I long sold my VR off but is rarbusto still at the top of some leaderboards?

OP it's really cheap and an addictive game once you get into it. Felt like a better flight simulator than some of the big name games. Viva Ex Vivo

https://youtu.be/oa28ZfubAKk

Hard to get a feel for what it going on, but you collect "energy" to keep going while avoiding "blockers" like the little triangles or big entities chasing you. Based on the level type the energy is clustered around certain shapes so there is an element of exploration.

Gamechanger...almost. I bought mine at $499 and I haven't had any regrets thanks to:
-REZ (solid shooter with great VR visuals, extra mission created for VR is freaking amazing)
-Batman Arkham VR (Short but sweet)
-Battlezone (a cool sci-fi tank shooter)
-Statik (excellent puzzle game)
-Thumper (hard but great rhythm game, can be played in 2D but its the best in VR)
-Farpoint (Cool shooter if get the PS Aim controller, btw get the Aim controller)
-Star Wars Battlefront VR Mission (Short but sweet X-Wing mission)
-I Expect you to die (a pretty funny spy puzzle game)
-RE7 (AAA Horror at its best)
-Superhot (You ever want to do slow mo like in the matrix, this is it)
-Astrobot (The Mario 64 of VR)
-Firewall Zero Hour (The Rainbow Six Siege of VRl, better with the Aim)
-Moss (Great VR platformer)
-Doom (Doom in VR, better with the Aim)
-Creed (The Punch Out of VR)
and lot more I haven't gone through.

There are some additional perks like:
-Watching 3D Blu Ray movies
-Watching VR videos from your USB (There is a gold mine of great VR videos online)
-Youtube VR
-Playing your 2D games on a Virtual Big Theater (in the dark)

The only downside is the visuals/resolution but I've gotten over it ever since I got a Pro (which I recommend greatly).

I used it a lot when it came out in 2016, then barely used in 2017 but this year has had so many great games that It has been hard to put it down.

At $199 is goddamn steal just to enjoy VR in general.

This year especially it seems like the system/accessory has come into its own. I mean there is some legit GOTY contenders in Astro Bot, Tetris Effect and Moss. And some truly unique and special experiences. I feel like that's all you can ask for.

I got it on day one and I like it quite a bit, although I use it sparingly these days as I don't have a ton of gaming time and it's so.mucb less convenient than picking up my Switch or playing my PS4 or Xbone. Also, their decision to stick with the PS Move controllers was a travesty. The lack of analog sticks puts developers in some awkward positions as far as how they handle locomotion (looking at you, Skyrim VR, you could've been The One). Also, VR needs to move to wireless. The cable is pretty annoying when the game encourages movement.

Anyways, as far as games go, my standouts have been ASTRO BOT(!!!), Rez, Polybius, Thumper, Moss, Farpoint and Wipeout. There's a lot of really cool experiences, but these are the ones that have really stuck with me.

Firewall Zero Hour with AIM controller is fantastic.
Astro Bot is a serious GOTY contender.
Superhot is great fun.
Some good puzzle games: statik, keep talking and no one explodes and I expect you to die
Farpoint with AIM is great
I also enjoyed: RE7, Wipeout, Thumper, 2MD Football

You won't regret your purchase.

Although I really like it, I just can't be bothered to set it all up.
YMMV, but I have to block out the RGB on my computer, keyboard, monitor. Curtain out the fish tank, close the blinds, turn off the electric fireplace for it to work.
That's a lot of stuff to need to do to wear a headset while sitting on the couch.

To be clear, I do really like what I've played with it.

PSVR and VR by extension has made me bored of flat gaming. The only sad part is that most flat games are a bigger scope than VR games so many of those livable world you experience in flat land are not on PSVR yet. Still the best gaming purchase since probably my first system N64 and has given me many of my greatest gaming experiences ever in the last 2 years.

EDIT: Start out with more stationary games and build up your VR legs.

I work on VR games pretty often, across various platforms.

I think PSVR offers one of the worst VR experiences, and yet has the best games.

The VR experience is plenty good enough to enjoy those games though, it's just the tracking fidelity is pretty poor. Visually it looks okay, but again, it's no match for PC VR.

But many PS VR exclusives are the best VR games on the market. Games like Tetris Effect, Resident Evil 7, Moss, Astrobot, Wipeout Omega Collection etc.

Definitely, I think reusing the move controllers was their biggest mistake personally. The tracking fidelity issues are most noticeable in cross platform games like Rec Room, where people on PC have a massive advantage with better motion tracking and controls.

While fidelity and visuals aren't the top, I feel the overall experience is pretty high due to the really comfortable headset. I haven't tried Rift yet, but PSVR is miles more comfortable than Vive for someone with glasses like myself.

It's the next generation of gaming, as simple as that.

Cool thing it works perfect as a completely solitary experience, but it can also work with friends for a few good laughs (since it's like blindfolding the person who wears the helmet and everyone else gets to have fun observing him/her going wild :P.

You're in for a treat OP.

PSVR is amazing. It's become my "second platform", which has negated my need to buy an actual second console in addition to my PS4 in this generation. The library is that good.

Most of my favourite items have been mentioned.

I'd just add:
Ultrawings(if you're fine with motion in VR)
PSVR Worlds is a good demo/sampler with extra challenges/leaderboards. I regularly end a vr session with a few rounds of Danger Ball and it should be cheap by now.

It's the best thing that I've experienced in gaming for decades. There are lots of great recommendations here already. I'm adding one that tends to get overlooked. If you like old school arcade shooters with a psychedelic twist, Polybius is pretty damn awsome.

I am shocked nobody mentioned the Persistence yet. It's a great space horror roguelike with a fantastic (imo) atmosphere somewhere between Alien and Dead Space and great replayability. The Campaign is also really long for a VR title and the player progression is very well realized and motivating I think. It's also quite hard and not as brutally scary as RE7, but just scary enough to really get to you in certain situations.
I absolutely recommend it.

I own both an oculus rift and demo'd a PSVR. I gotta say I like wearing the psvr a lot more. As for games, I don't really care for much, but the selection is okay.

Good start, but not good enough hardware for me to consider it. Give me a second generation model with higher resolution, better tracking and above all better controllers. Probably won't come out until PS5 though.

Quick question about identifiying PSVR v1 and v2 when buying online without a clear remark about it:

Is it true that the bundle with the camera and VR Worlds will always be v2 of the headset? There are conflicting reports on this. Sadly, some retailers don't tell you if it's the older or newer model they are selling.

Doom VFR is quite bad overall, I don't suggest it.

Get Super Hot with 2 Moves, Astro Bot, Playroom VR (is free), Knockout League (2 moves), Farpoint (with Aim, without is just bad), RE7, Thumper, Moss, Rigs, Statik, Rush of Blood (with moves is better).

And You will be happy for some time, and a good diversity of games to choose from... :)

One more thing, if You have a PS4Pro you will see great improvement in graphic quality overall.

I was a doubter of VR prior to getting my PSVR, but I don't regret it. Astro Bot is my favourite game this year. I do wish it was a bit beefier as objects in the distance are very jaggy and the outside areas of RE7 looked like ass.

I am very excited to play even more games in VR looking to the future, and hope Sony continues to support it.

Moss, Astrobot, RE7, Persistence.

I also bought mine today after spending 2 hours playing Astrobot at a friends house, I never had so much fun in a while.

P.S I own VIVE

Full disclosure: I work for the company.

But still I think it's worth pointing out to UK members that at Argos you can get a PSVR starter pack plus one of Astro Bot, Firewall or Wipeout for £179.99 now. Stock levels seems reasonably healthy too. Other places may have the same deal, I don't know.

Yea, absolutely. I worry about the next step for PSVR. The headset is great, the games are great, but the environment for it is pretty awful. It really needs a proper 6DOF path, proper motion controls and tracking. I hope they bring some kind of package to existing users or I'm afraid there's going to be a lot of PSVR users who will walk away instead of buying a new PSVR. The problem is, regardless of what they bring, to get it it on par with something like the rift, which is $350 with two sensors and fantastic controllers. I just don't see it. Proper motion controllers alone would probably bring them up to that cost range.

I have my PSVR, I enjoy it, but it's very hard to be unbiased when you have a PCVR headset and the forwards compatibility of it seems extremely limited.

PSVR must haves in my opinion are:

  • Astrobot - Best platformers and one of the best VR games period. The game cannot fail to put a smile on your face.
  • Firewall+Aim Controller - The best FPS I have played in a long time that includes non-VR FPS games too. Shows that VR is a genuine game changer when done correctly and breathes life into the genre of tactical FPS games.
  • Wipeout Omega Collection - Best VR racer, nothing can prepare you for the sheer sense of speed that game has, hard to go back to flat screen racing after.
  • RE7 - Still a quality VR experience, horror in VR is on a completely different level the constant feeling of dread that you feel while playing is something else.
Those 4 should give you a good base for what VR can do across different genres. There are of course other fantastic games like Skyrim, Moss, Tetris Effect, Superhot, Rush of Blood, etc which are also must haves but I would defs start with those core 4.

I'm an early PSVR adopter having picked one up for December 2016. I didn't really have a great deal of experience with VR, but had used Google Cardboard and the Gear VR, so I has a limited idea of what to expect. Even still, my first foray into "true" VR was truly mind blowing. One of the greatest gaming experiences of my life and that was only from playing demos. You'll get a lot of people talking about the graphics being terrible and blurry but I assure you once you get into a game that matters very little. Hell a game with blocky cartoon style graphics can still suck you in and give you that sense of presence (where your brain fools your senses into thinking you're actually there).

As far as recommendations are concerned i'd 100% look into the free market to start off.

  • Playroom VR is extremely good. Don't let the cutesy graphics fool you. There's some real gems in there (see robot rescue).
  • The Kitchen VR demo is good for a brief scare and will get you in the mood for RE7 which, IMHO, is the reason for owning the headset.
  • Call of Duty: Jackal Assault is another free "experience" which is much better then it looks. It'll also give you a good early test of your VR legs.
  • There's also PSVR Demo Disc 1 &2 available which will give you dozens of games to try out.
After that I'd recommend:

  • Until Dawn Rush Of Blood: It may be an early PSVR title but it's the best shooter out there. A must own.
  • Batman Arkham VR: Another early one but for a sense of presence this is up there with the best. Only about an hour long but boy is it memorable.
  • Superhot: Superlative and a fantastic work-out to boot
  • Job Simulator: If you plan on having people over or have young kids/siblings then get this. It's easy to play and great for VR beginners. As well as being a lot of fun for adults.
  • Thumper: As far as rhythm games go I actually prefer Thumber over the likes of Rez. It's so easy to pick up but hard to master at the same time.
  • Statik: Hands down the best puzzle game for PSVR. Incredibly polished game but maybe a little short with a lack of replayabliity.
  • Skyrim VR: If you have 1000 hours spare to replay this in VR (and spend hours looking over every little object in 3D) then grab this. It may not be the best looking VR game (in fact in places it's awful) but it's such a different experience in VR, it's like starting the game over from scratch.
  • Finally RE7 VR: If you don't buy this then you're not doing the PSVR justice. Great game in 2D but VR pushes this to one of the best experiences ever. I cannot stress how good it it playing this in VR. Be prepared though, If you have little VR experience then this can really test you. Best to ease into it with short play sessions.
edit: almost forgot - You can't go wrong with Moss or Astro Bot. Both incredible experiences and worth every penny.

I'm admittedly a VR enthusiast, owning a Vive, Rift, PSVR and soon to be Pimax 5k Plus. It's quite telling that I use the PSVR the most - although the hand tracking is ropey compared to the Rift and Vive, IMHO the games on it are better and play to the strengths of the controller/setup. The display is also not notably inferior to the Vive/Rift (I've a 1080 graphics card) and the headset is massively more comfortable to wear.

Astrobot is sublime. Tetris Effect, Superhot, Rez, RE7, Wipeout, Arkham, Poylbius are great and I have a massive soft spot for Statik too.

Must admit that job simulator and skyrim work better on Vive/Rift due to the lighthouse tracking and controllers.

Hope that helps.

I can't speak for other retailers but I don't think we'll be going lower than this. Our BF "event" officially starts today so deals will be going live with more added throughout the week rather than keeping them until next Friday. I wouldn't be surprised if the £180 price point was consistent across retailers but the additional games were the difference.
