You know, I think the game downsamples on its own. If I choose 4K on a 1440p, the text is ever so slightly sharper at 4K, but still presents a 1440p image. Since it doesn't have a dynamic list of resolutions (so no DSR), and Gedosato crashes, I don't see another way to do it anyway.

That sounds pretty cool, actually. I'll try if I can downsample from 1440p or even 4K while retaining 60fps.

I've never played a Star Ocean game. Wondering if I should get this for the PS4 Pro or the PC. WHere are people finding a better experience?

For the first 1.5 hours I had it on but then I noticed that it seems like when you walk close to a wall it kicks in so I turned it off and left it off.

Thanks! Yeah I turned it on, but it weirds out if you are near objects or walls like you said. Like even in the very first save room. Off it is! What a beautiful looking game!

I am already inundated with games, yet I am sorely tempted to grab this. Always meant to give it a shot in the prior generation. I haven't played the others, but I've heard good things.

Star Ocean 4 is the only RPG I've ever played where I didn't only play the main character all the way through the game. Can't wait to get my end-game crew with Arumat / Reimi / Sarah / Myuria.
Think there's at least a 1% chance we'll ever get playable Crowe dlc?

DSR works as long as you set your desktop to 4k first. There are some annoyances with alt-tabbing like it goes back to window mode (it also runs horribly when windowed) and you need to access its options again to turn it back to fullscreen (alt-enter doesn't work and i'm not sure if there's another shortcut), otherwise it runs at 4k/60fps on a 1060gtx but I have no time to test it some more since the beginning has a lot of tutorials and the intro is unskippable :(

pretty good so far

It's a fun game with a nonsense plot and bad characters, but that's all the Star Ocean games. Will probably double dip when I have time to play it again.

Ok, so it's a really good port so far on PS4 Pro. Some slowdowns here and there during traversal, cutscenes or combats, but it's running much better than the 360/ps3 versions anyway. The only thing that annoys me is that the framerate takes a dip when doing a blindside no matter what on 4K mode (even if you are lowering every graphical setting), which wasn't the case on 360/ps3 versions.

For best balance between performance and quality in 4K mode, turn off depth of field and camera blur, object draw distance to medium and shadows to standard or 2x. You won't get much of a hit, this won't be any worse than the last-gen version and the camera blur / depth of field looks bad anyway.

Graphics are based off the 360 version, which is a really good thing. It has proper multi-texturing on Aeos cliffs and rocks vs baked texturing, better water shader, full alpha transparency on killed enemies vs dithering based transparency, much better hair implementation (less aliased; PS3 version seemed to use a really low quality form of alpha 2 coverage), more animated shadows everywhere vs static shadows, etc.

Game is 4k60 for cutscenes, traversal and combat. but with dips. Using the 2560x1440 option provides a much smoother experience all around though if you are really nitpiccking about framerate. It also lets you maximize the graphical settings without any issue. As for me? I am using the 4K anyway since it looks much better and is still quite a leap compared to last-gen consoles framerate / graphic wise.

So uhhh...didn't people hate this game last gen? It's supposed to be aggressively mediocre. Which isn't saying a lot since last gen most jrpgs sucked.
I didn't hate it , the game has MAIN 2 problems.
-Extra uber long dongeons
-English voice cast

Tthere are a couple of problems here and there but they are minor ... It's a game that is too big and at times feels unfocused and rushed in some areas , but they nailed it on the main thing : the battle system.

Just started but only had time to go through the tutorials, so only some downsampled shots from the beginning. The game is pretty sharp, some low res hair or maybe dithering. Probably better to leave DoF blur off imo (second shot is without DoF). Camera blur is kind of bad too. Game looks pretty nice.

I'll have a look through the thread but aside from having to limit the fps is the PC version okay? I'm not sure whether to get it on PC or PSN. Decisions, decisions...

Thanks! It's in my cart. I need a meaty game to get into as the others on my to-do list are quite light... Persona 5, Andromeda, Automata, Yakuza Kiwami...
Oh... I've made a terrible mistake. lol :)

Looks like Imgur doesn't show screens I put on here. I might be doing it wrong though lol. Anyone notice or have trouble with syncing trophies with this game? They don't seem to work on my PS4 Pro, but I haven't tried rebooting yet. Gotta keep my bonus board alive!

Sounds like going above 60fps and the potential audio related hard crash are the biggest issues with the PC version, yeah? I honestly expected worse.

The PC version is great and runs great. There are minor issues though like v-sync for monitors with higher refresh rates than 60hz, no way exit button from the main menu, and alt-tabbing issue. I also notice dithering on hairs but even at 4K resolution downsampled to 1080p, it's still visible especially on cutscenes.

haha we're all guilty of that. I basically put my Pro on sleep mode so I don't have to rebuild my perfect xp bonus board XD

Is combat good enough to carry the rest of the game? What other games is it comparable to in feel? Tales of (which)? NieR: Automata? Fable? .hack//G.U.? Phantasy Star Online or Universe? Shining Force EXA? Ys (which)?

Yes, the combat is really fun. It's comparable to previous entries like SO2 or SO3 but if you really want a comparison with another series, i'd say it's similar to Team Symphonia Tales games. Combat are not instantaneously on the map like those games you've mentioned. They are more traditional. You encounter an enemy, the battle arena loads up then at that point you have free range movement on the characters. This isn't turn based. Pressing an attack button will instantaneously execute the attack if you are in range. If you are not, the character will run toward the enemy until it is. You can chain skill attacks, which will give a damage bonus depending on how long the chain is. You can also juggle to a certain extent using standard attack. There are additional mechanics to master, such as the rush gauge or blindsiding (which is very important). All in all, my favorite battle system after SO3.

Put 3 hours in last night on the PS4 Pro, playing 4K with everything at default(maxed except blur turned off).

Only performance issues I noticed is pop-in when exploring the larger zones(enemies, shadows, shrubs) and some slight slowdown during hectic battle sections, but neither are really dramatic and most of the time the game runs beautifully.

The increase in resolution greatly benefits making the more muted coloring and palette blend far less. For instance, the first planet is mostly a muddy mesh of green and brown texturing all over meant to evoke a jungle, but on the old consoles it always camouflaged everything and came across as garish and messy looking, especially given how blurry it all was. Difficult to make out detail. Now everything looks distinct and a bit more natural, my eyes aren't fighting to parse what I am looking at. Factor in the fast loading and generally ultra crisp image quality and I am really pleased.

I have forgotten how sluggish the cutscenes can be. Lots of talking heads rolling out terrible cliches that circle around making their point(and get in a huff when their listener isn't mind-reading their indirectness). It's anime basically. Even worse there is no music or ambience during most conversational cutscenes, it's just you and these voices that often can cringe.

Also, the dungeons(or exploration zones) go on forever. That first dungeon really wore out its welcome given how few combat options there are fighting the same 3-4 enemies dozens upon dozens of times. A bit much.

Otherwise, it's a really great port.

I put in a couple hours on PS4'kay Pro last night. The port seems solid so far. Very few noticeable performance issues, even when messing with the graphical settings. We'll see how it holds up over a lengthy adventure!

There are far, faaar longer dungeons later on. The first one is among the shortest of the bunch lol

I keep getting excited for the post game, but then I always remember how fucking AWFUL the Wandering Dungeon is. Having a dungeon where a lot of the progress is locked behind rare loot drops was so fucking dumb. Especially since you lose all progress when you leave, and can't save mid-dungeon.

I beat it on the 360 though, but it took multiple tries due to constantly getting fucked over by the most annoying "trials" and me eventuallly getting pissed off and leaving because I already wasted too much time.

Star Ocean 4 and Sonic Unleashed were two games last generation that realllllllllllllly felt ahead of their time with their focus on lighting techniques in their engines.

SO4 in particular kind of had this odd clash going on where the lighting was photorealistic but the characters were hardcore anime.

Anyway, for this remaster, all they really need to do to make the game better is delete Lymle

It's great to see this engine really shine now that it's running on more powerful hardware. I'm definitely noticing details that I hadn't noticed before.

If anyone's interested in technical information about SO4:

Hmm, now should I start SO4 or .hack first... decisions, decisions...
You're the thread creator... ya gotta go SO4 :)

Yeah, locked chests that can only be obtainable later with appropriate keys/skills is my major pet peeves in JRPGs. It's such a common feature in the genre which is just a cheap way to pad the game's length by encouraging players to revisit dungeons to obtain them. It's dumbfounding that such system is still used by most JRPG developers even today.

I'm sure that this has been asked. I haven't played any of the previous titles...How is it jumping into this? Is it worth not knowing back story if its connected at all?

Chronologically this is the first game in the series. As far as I remember, other than a few nods here and there you don't really need to know much about the previous entries, if at all.

What is this? A Disgaea game?

On a serious note, this will be the first time I play this game. After "Integrity and Faithlessness" I think it's time to play other games In the franchise.
You're going from the worst to the second worst. Keep going backwards, they get better and better. Except 1 isn't as good as 2.

Well to be fair I like bad games. I liked DMC2, I liked Integrity and Faithlessness, so I may like this one as well. I will do what you say though, after this one ill keep going backwards
