Oh, and this finally explains what Kodera meant when earlier this year, he told to investors that the PlayStation division would go through a "quiet/soft" period before returning with full power.

Absolute nonsense.

It was E3 that made Sony rise to their dominance. It was E3 that made people warm up to their new console. It was E3 that allowed to respond to MS in 2013 in a brutal fashion PR wise that made the PS4 the success it is today. The stats Sony is prooud of is due to E3.

For Greg's plan to work, that "one" event he is talking about has to be absolutely flawless, otherwise people are not going to give them the benefit of the doubt again if they repeat the year after.

This is why when Shawn said in the last PlayStation blogcast that Sony will "amp up" communications and "find ways to get their message out" and "share hopes and dreams of WWS" etc.

They must have something planned.

For one, I'm not angry, I'm unhappy with the way Sony is handling PlayStation right now. I'm unhappy that they've cut back on literally all smaller 3rd party exclusives like Journey, etc, and have also cut down their investments of AAA 3rd party exclusives like LBP3 (Sumo Digital), Until Dawn (Supermassive), The Order (RaD), etc. I'm also unhappy that they haven't invested in new First Party core studios, especially when you look at how they sold of SOE, closed Evolution, Zipper, and a lot more. I know they're working on a new studio in San Diego but it seems like it's going to be a Uncharted studio which is just a meh from me, and this is coming from someone who has loved the Uncharted series to death. I mean, it's not hard to see when you just look at the list of CORE games they've released or announced in recent years.
Their investment in 3rd party studios hasn't been cut down.

Three of their major games this year, Detroit, Shadow of the Colossus and Spider-Man were all collaborations with third parties. Supermassive as also confirmed they have more exclusives on the way and as far as we know Wild is still a thing and Death Stranding is coming.

And they are still investing in smaller games with third parties. They're just coming in the form of VR and PlayLink games (plus a few more like MediEvil). Sure they may not be the games you want but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

And they are investing in their studios. They've literally established two new ones this generation: PixelOpus and Manchester (with rumors of the new one in San Diego). Others like Guerrilla are significantly expanding.

Also glossing over the fact that games are more expensive now and take longer which is resulting in less output across the entire industry compared to the past.

Sony might think like Nintendo that they don't really need E3. IF they formally announced PS5 during that one event, the show would be bonkers anyway. Just teasing it would not be enough since we all know it's coming, imo.

"Happy 5th anniversary, guys. E3 canceled."
"Today's gonna be so much fun!"
Yup, if that's their idea of fun, I wonder how a kick in the nuts gets processed.

Anyone else kind of excited by this?

We now possibly have something fresh/new to look forward to next year instead of the run of the mill E3 conference.
In hindsight it could be a good thing, but it still sucks that they announced this on the PS4's 5th anniversary with nothing firm about what is going to replace it, and why it's a good move. I'll tell ya, they'd better show Death Stranding's release date, and a new TLoU 2 trailer featuring Joel at TGAs to offset this news.

I know my opinions are basically dirty words around this thread, but I agree with you. It's frustrating to see Sony become laser-focused at the expense of some of the things that used to define their platform. It's all well and good that they're doing well, but time ago was Sony doing well meant you'd have a huge variety of stuff to look forward to.

Nowadays it feels more like they're trying to just be the Criterion Collection of first party games.
I also think this is because how weak the competition from MS has been, think about it, when the 360 was winning in the earlier days of last generation, it took them a while but Sony went all out with exclusives. But I'm really happy to see what MS is doing right now and I hope they keep getting more studios to push their first party portfolio. It will hopefully make Sony more competitive next generation. But on the other hand, I don't think MS has a chance next generation when you consider that Sony's first party studios have gotten the foundation for their new IPs and will be able to push games faster. Just in the first two years of the PS5 I think we will have Horizon 2, a Uncharted game, Spider-man 2, new Ratchet & Clank, Bloodborne 2 (after FS is down with Sekiro) and more.

Hmmm...But what about that unannounced PS4 First Party game? Is it MLB19?

I'm hoping it's a big title, hopefully a RPG.

I think it's just that the third parties aren't bringing the AAA single player content as much as they were so Sony is doing it to round out their platform's portfolio.

They were funding stuff like Journey because no one else was. Now Sky is seemingly getting Apple money. Until Dawn, that studio just said they're working on Sony stuff, and Detroit was that same sort of thing just this year.

So anyone know what happens to Benji's one last big AAA game? Where is that now being shown next year if Sony are at no events?

I'd be down for direct style communication videos for Dreams, Ghost of Tsushima and Concrete Genie. They could sprinkle those out over the course of the year

Wtf are you doing Sony? Unbelievable.

Even if you had nothing new to show at least be there for GoT, TLOU2 and Death Stranding, do something.

Next year is going to be hell of a year.

Now i am even more pumped about game awards and their teasing with reveals. Could we actually get dates for TloU 2, Death Standing and Ghosts? Or atleast for the first two.

Funniest part is that people for some unknown reason forgot about all the games released this year and all the games that will be release in 19
My take: They will release most of their games at 2019, maybe couple left for the end of 2019 and start of the 2020. They won't announce ps5 at next e3 so they can't show all the new games without it. Same goes for the 3rd party developers. They can't show new games without proper next gen announced
So Sony will have nothing new to show from FP and TP.

I have to believe so just because I can't see them releasing all three of them in 2020 and then releasing the PS5. I feel at least one of them is releasing next year based on that, but I have no inside info. Just thinking out loud. =P

Not all big games are revealed on events.

OK. So where will it be revealed? At TGAs and then just released next year or hear nothing at all for the whole of next year and it releases in 2020?

My point here is that surely Sony will do something next year as doing nothing at all makes no sense for the current upcoming games. Like I said in a previous post Shawn indicated they will amp things up and get the message out so again something is planned one way or another.

Lol Complacent Sony strikes again. I knew they were being super quiet for a reason. Just didn't expect it was because they had nothing to show lol.

They dont need a stage for that.

Simply releasing new trailers on their Youtube channel is enough. Or they could do Sony Directs maybe.

They do need a stage for it. Trailers and announcements from E3 will end up getting way more attention.

I don't understand what Sony was thinking here - even if you got nothing new 1st party to show just stuff it with a bunch of 3rd party reveals and some new gameplay of your own games and you can "win", just like MS did this year. Put some effort in so it doesn't look like you don't care.

Damn I can see why they'd do it...

Still it kinda depresses me lol :[

E3 is like Christmas ( i dont actully celebrate christmas ) for me and Sony always be bringing the biggest presents

2019 E3 Christmas might as well be cancelled :(

I hope santa Nintendo brings has some gifts for E3, but the last couple of their E3s kinda sucked.

Isn't Death Stranding already in phase where it is ready, but Kojima plays it through and makes changes and polish it? I think it is going to 2019 title and Ghosts is going to be cross gen PS5

Wasn't the game that will sell the most this year, RDR2, not at E3...

If i was Sony i would abandoned E3 permanently and just focus mostly on PSX every year. Basically save all the eggs for 1 big conference (PSX) and 2 smaller (TGS/Europe) conferences per year.

Sony will not drop E3 forever. They announced all they have to offer and they might have unnanounced stuff – which can be just announced with a blogpost, which also goes for release dates. This gives devs the opportunity to just work on their games and having everything out by 2020, before the PS5 launches. Although we might see a game that might launch like BotW, same day for both consoles.

The PS5 will be announced in February. Showing of tech demos, the hardware, some games. E3 2020 will be their comeback showing of launch games and launch window games, revealing price, OS and new features and such. Release of the console just like always in November.
