Jason Schreier is just referencing an article from a few months ago. He might be reiterating the same idea, but this is not really anything new.
It's definitely not new information, since this article that references why Jason thinks it's 2020 quotes an old Kotaku article, right?

Both Jason and Benji seem to be doubling down on existing info and hunches, because of what they think is the logical reasoning behind Sony cancelling their E3 2019. Nothing wrong with that, I'm starting to feel like if they can take longer and work PS3 backwards compatibility in there and have Horizon 2 at launch, I'm all for a Q1 or Q2 2020 launch.

Yeaah, 2019 would've felt too soon for me. This gen is the first where I haven't really felt a need for next-gen yet even after 5 years. I jumped into this gen late with the Pro in 2016, so that's probably why I feel like that even more so.

Feb 2020 reveal, Nov 2020 release. Why change what worked last time?

MS would be smart to get the Xbox Two on the market over the summer, though do consoles historically do well releasing in that period? I guess March 2020 might be better?

2020 was always my guess. Every game was basically roadmapped to be released 2019 or early 2020. I expect alot of games ( last of us, ghost os tsushima, death stranding) to be cross gen and there day 1 with PS5.

Or fuck it they might make one of them a day 1 launch exclusive

End of 2020 feels almost certain at this point, although I wonder which of Sonys studios could have games ready to launch with it since I assume TLoU2 and Death Stranding wont be delayed that long. 2022-2024 will probably be the golden era for ps5 games.

I seriously don't see how the current tech would allow them to have a PS5 with reasonable power and a reasonable price out in 2020. Especially not if they want to make 4k the new standard.

All is right in the world of next gen predictions. I wasn't wavering on my 2020 prediction and the devs talk around the industry confirmed it.

Thanks, Discussions with Developers article by Kotaku.

At this point, they'll be cross gen games.

I mean, most of us who were looking at this objectively had already come to this conclusion. Sure, we all think 2019 would be awesome, but realistically it made very little sense in any light.

2020 feels like a pretty solid time to do it, not only in terms of the tech they might be able to use but also due to how the PS4 continues to sell (both hardware and software).

A late 2020 release should in theory allow them to have developed a proper next-gen box without having to rush anything. Or so I hope.

I think Microsoft has a UNIQUE opportunity to pull a 360 here ( 1 year before the competition ). I hope they do. This feels SO MUCH like the PS2 era where Sony dominated witjpiy mercy. But then Microsoft and Nintemdo responded with the 360 and the Wii after their commercial failures. Nintendo slready answered big time. Make your move MS !

Most Xbox fans would hate Microsoft rushing out a console to try and score early sales, especially if it gives Sony a potential power advantage with PS5.

Not to mention even if Microsoft wanted to release next year, what would they have for it? Gears is current gen, Halo is current gen, they have nothing ready to blow people away on a next gen console.

No, MS needs to focus on their new first party, make some amazing games, craft the best hardware they can for Fall 2020 and come out with both barrels. They can't afford to rush this next launch, not after how badly they botched Xbox One.

So one more holiday for PS4. Early 2020 announce. 2020 Summer launch or late spring if they need it on that FY.

Probably launching in a recession though, and PS4 will be supported another 5+ years with many games getting multiplatform releases there. I don't see how Sony comes up with a significant hardware upgrade but holds to $399, but this is pretty much the only "win" condition.

Software schedule would be severely impacted by that

I mean they're still working on:

Days Gone
Dreams
Ghost of Tsushima
The Last of Us II
Death Stranding

I can see the first 3 be the 2019 releases, and then The Last of Us II and Death Stranding (if DS is not pushed to next-gen hardware) being the 2020 swan songs before a Spring 2021 release.

This leaves me kinda reserved about it. it's just going to be another light-next gen isn't it? I mean, I did think this generation has been a leap over PS3 and Xbox360 but not nearly as much as PS2 vs PS3. It's gonna be pc-architecture and notably but not vastly better looking graphics I suppose.

I don't really see how. I'd assume we'd just get more cross-gen titles if the system was released in 2020 like last gen, that would just be kept as standard PS4/Xbox One games if the new systems weren't released that year, so having a 2021 release would give devs more time to make true next-gen titles.

Also, it seemed like these mid-gen system refreshes were specifically designed to have this gen last longer, so giving them a relatively short 3 to 4 year lifespan seems pretty counter intuitive if you ask me.

I mean, do you really think I haven't asked anyone about the PS5 between April and now?

Remember what Todd Howard said at E3

"We also been working on a brand new next-generation single player game."

Devs are already having fun with PS5

You really think Sony didn't learn from the PS3/360 era not to let Xbox have a head start? Both PS4 and PS4 Pro came out way before their Xbox competition, and it worked wonders for Sony. It seems pretty clear they're not giving up the timing advantage ever again.

Why would they announce it in the year before releasing it?
Shrug. They have before.

PS4 was February announcement before a November launch and I'd say that worked well.

So expecting them to skip E3 after announcing the PS5 in late winter... it doesn't make any sense.

Eh, or they're guessing what the hardware will be. Similar to what we saw with Watchdogs and other titles that went into development long before XO and PS4 dev kits existed.

Yeah, no way are they releasing in 2019 now. No way would they skip E3 if they were planning on shipping the console that year.

November 2020 it is.

Who said Halo is current gen ? Microsoft did not commit on that. I think it will be a cross gen title a la Zelda.

Microsoft is not stupid. They saw what Nintendo did with Breath of the Wild on the Switch. They'll do the same with Halo Infinite on Scarlett.

I'm a Xbox fan since the Orginal Xbox and I hope they bring the Xbox Next in 2019. Power wasn't an issue for the 360. So you can come a year earlier ans still be powerful and competitive.
